Levels are lush with colors to accentuate the very good graphics, and the seven worlds have a specific theme to stand out from one another, for example jungle, desert, or an ice world. A wonderful soundtrack rounds out this absolutely dreamy sequel.

As the Nintendo of today continues to churn out one similar-looking Mario game after the next to placate money-starved investors, Super Mario Bros. 2 will forever stand as a reminder that, at one time, Nintendo took some significant risks with their biggest franchises. Here’s hoping they gain back some of their former chutzpah.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is a classic game and a must-own for any real NES collection. I think that it is one of the 10 best games released for the NES. SMB2 is the most unique title in the Super Mario trilogy and is a very fun game. Ultimately, its low difficulty level brings it down just a slight notch from the A+ status of SMB1 and SMB3.

Son bouleversement des règles établies, son style à la fois proche de Mario et sans aucune parenté, son ambiance loufoque, sa liberté, son approche non linéaire, qui préfigure assez bien les nombreux changements apportés dans Super Mario Bros. 3, tout cela aura énormément servi Nintendo pour imposer leur mascotte en occident. Grâce à lui, Nintendo montrait, quelque peu injustement puisque nous ne savions pas à l'époque l'échange qui avait été opéré, leur capacité à se renouveler entièrement d'un jeu à l'autre, quand bien même celui-ci était ancré dans une série. C'était une leçon de créativité, un saut de la mort dont ils ressortaient en héros, leur nom désormais tatoué en lettres de feu sur le coeur des joueurs.

L'aventure rocambolesque de Super Mario Bros. 2 continue encore aujourd'hui de nous étonner. L'histoire est à présent écrite, et comment en vouloir à Nintendo de nous offrir un tel jeu ? Si celui-ci est une arnaque, alors autant dire qu'il est l'arnaque la plus jouissive du jeu vidéo ! Le titre reprend beaucoup du très bon Doki Doki Panic et le peaufine encore davantage pour nous servir ce qui est devenu, tout simplement, un grand jeu. Ce deuxième Mario est une suite de rêve qui n'a pas à rougir de ses bizarreries par rapport à l'univers Mario. Bien au contraire, c'est aussi pour ces différences et cette fraîcheur que nous l'aimons toujours autant.
It's involved, deceptively tricky, has major improvements in the graphics and sonics league, and, most importantly of all, is superlative fun to play.

After the phenomenally successful first Super Mario Bros game, you might have expected Nintendo to stick with the same winning formula, but this second edition has a very different look and feel. It's far more challenging and complicated than the original, but still retains the charm and quality gameplay you would expect from Nintendo.

Super Mario Bros. 2 is seen as the black sheep of the series yet if you take it at face value it's seriously enjoyable with tons of gameplay variety and just the right level of challenge. Everything it sets out to achieve is well executed and it's definitely worth picking up on either the NES or on Super Mario All-Stars (1993, SNES).

Even though Super Mario Bros. 2 may not quite measure up to the awesome title that was SMB3, it's still a great game. The graphics are great, the sounds are okay, and everything else about this game pak is top-notch. The gameplay is a nice change of pace and never gets old, even after you've seen the classic ending. Some may scoff at Nintendo of America's decision to go with this conversion instead of the Japanese SMB2, but in my view the trade-off worked and we got the superior game. It may be the odd man out in the series, but Super Mario Bros. 2 proves to be a game that still does the Mario franchise proud.
Mean Machines (Oct, 1990)
Super Mario Brothers can't have been an easy act to follow, so Nintendo really had their work cut out producing a follow-up. But they've done it, and SMB2 is even better! Cute and highly detailed characters and colourful backgrounds really make it look cartoony and fun, and the music and sound effects match the graphics for jolliness. But the gameplay's what's most important, and even in this respect, SMB2 tops the original! All the new characters and the new abilities add a further dimension to the original platform fun. At nearly £40 it's one of the most expensive Nintendo carts, but any fan of the original will certainly get his money's worth!
The european and US SMB2. This game is not like other Mario games and that is because it wasn´t a Mario game at all from the beginning! The game was from the beginning a japanese game named "Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic" that Nintendo bought and changed the heroes into Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach! This game isn´t like other Mario game and takes place, not in the Mushroom Kingdom but this time in the dream world Sub-Con where a huge green reptile named Wart (not so different from Bowser!) rules. You can´t stomp on enemies like in other Mario games but you can ride ride on them instead and take them up and carry them around and throw them on other enemies. This game is both big and quite challenging and it´s differences from other Mario games isn´t a bad thing at all! The question is if this isn´t better than the japanese SMB 2!
Die Motivation ist besonders für SMB 1-Spieler sehr hoch, da SMB 2 eine ideenreiche und erfrischende Weiterführung dieses Jump and Run-Themas ist. Die etwas kniffliger gewordenen Levels motivieren den Spieler auch langfristig; daß man auf ein Zeitlimit und auf die übliche Punktehatz verzichtet hat, kommt diesem nur zugute. Obwohl ich mich mit dem Loben normalerweise zurückhalte, kann ich nur sagen: Ganz hervorragend!

Im direkten Vergleich zum älteren Vorgänger ist die Grafik stark verbessert worden. Die Animation entspricht nun dem heutigen Standard und der Bildschirm scrollt butterweich von links nach rechts. Auch die Musik wurde schön komponiert und paßt hervorragend zu einem “Jump And Run“-Spiel, denn sie verleitet auch nach mehreren Stunden Spielzeit nicht dazu, die Lautstärke des Fernsehers auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren. Fazit: Super Mario Bros. 2 bietet alles, was das Herz eines richtigen “J‘ n‘ R“-Maniacs begehrt.

Rørleggeren som kom til å redde prinsessen mange flere ganger enn det han trodde var nok i forgjengeren har i en av seriens få avstikkere fra temaet byttet ut prinsesser for onde konger og drømmeverdener. Faktisk så har du her muligheten til å styre prinsessen selv, en av totalt fire figurer. De tre andre er ikke så ukjent de heller: Mario, Luigi, Toad.

Canon my red, shaven ass. This game paved the way for Mario to fully realize his potential. I'm giving this game the highest score I've ever scored anything on a 1-to-10 scale of scoring.

Super Mario Bros. 2 è un gioco che piace o non piace. Troppo particolare, troppo scialbo, troppo strano: le definizioni sono molte e probabilmente il giudizio finale dipende, più del solito, dai gusti del giocatore. Chi si aspetta di trovarvi le stesse emozioni provate giocando il predecessore rimarrà deluso; chi, liberando la mente dai pregiudizi, lo affronterà cme gioco a sè stante, lo troverà piacevole, ma niente di più. Certo non è un capolavoro, come non è neanche un brutto gioco... è solo "un gioco", appunto, che avrebbe potuto essere qualcosa di epocale (come sarebbe stato invece il ben più curato sequel), e come tale diverte ed appassiona, nel suo piccolo.

Einfach ist's also nicht unbedingt – Spaß bringt das „falsche“ Mario-Abenteuer allemal! Grafisch sieht's hervorragend aus, der Soundtrack ist ohnehin über jeden Zweifel erhaben, und auch spielerisch gibt’s eigentlich nichts auszusetzen. Allenfalls das stellenweise triste Leveldesign ödet etwas an. Trotzdem rundherum zu empfehlen!
Power Play (Jan, 1989)
Ein großes Lob an Nintendo: Ich hatte erst befürchtet, daß man für SMB 2 das alte Spielprinzip vom Vorgänger wieder verwenden und einfach neue Levels zusammenstellen würde. Zum Glück haben sich die Japaner aber viel mehr einfallen lassen. SMB 2 ist auch ein Hüpf-Geschicklichkeitsspiel, bei dem es einiges zu erforschen gibt, doch da hören die Ähnlichkeiten auch schon auf. Das Spielprinzip ist völlig neuartig und gut (wenn auch nicht ganz so genial wie beim Vorgänger-Modul). Die Grafik ist recht niedlich und die abwechslungsreiche Musik super komponiert. SMB 2 ist kein unbedingtes Muß für jede Nintendo-Sammlung, aber mit Sicherheit eine lohnende Bereicherung.

Nur weil ein paar Mitarbeiter von Nintendo of America glaubten, dass echte Super Mario Bros.2 sei wegen seines hohen Schwierigkeitsgrades für das amerikanische und europäische Volk nicht geeignet, bekamen NES-Besitzer eine halbgare Packung auf dem Tisch geknallt, die nicht so recht ins Mario-Universum passt. Freilich ist die Idee mit dem greifen und werfen von Gegnern/Gemüse eine nette Idee, aber das ist eben nicht Mario. Deswegen ist die westliche Version von Super Mario Bros.2 für mich persönlich zwar ein gutes Game, hätte aber eigentlich in seiner ursprünglichen Form herausgebracht werden sollen. Als Mariofan bin ich bis heute mit diesem Stück Software nicht warm geworden.
Overall, this game is shorter than its predecessor, containing only twenty levels in seven worlds, and no 'second quest', but it is decently lengthed since levels take longer, and it has high replay value because you’ll have to play it many times before you beat it, and even then, you’ll likely be wanting to play it again. If you don’t have this game, I would recommend you get some version of it.

Das „Mogel-Modul“ erreicht zwar nicht ganz die Klasse des „echten“ Vorgängers, aber Abwechslung wurde auch hier großgeschrieben. So muß man sich durch den Wüstensand graben, Leitern erklimmen, Wände sprengen, mit Albatrossen durch die Lüfte gondeln und vor allem die richtige Taktik gegen die raffinierten Endgegner heraustüfteln. Grafisch und soundmäßig ist dagegen nicht gerade die Hölle los, aber das war ja nun beim Quasi-Vorhüpfer auch nicht viel anders...

The battle takes place in Subcon, Mario's subconsciousness. Wart represents Mario's Id, an undesirable blemish upon his soul that houses his urges to just screw it all and stop eating his veggies. "Potions" help Mario escape into another world and not face reality. Mario is "average," possessing no special skills. But with the help of his friends, Mario is able to overcome these primal urges: Birdo, who is sexually ambivalent; Shyguy, an introvert; Bobomb, who is short-fused; Ostra, who keeps his head in the sand and lets people ride him; Fryguy, a short-lived emotional fire; Triclyde, an indecisive, underhanded snake; Panser, who doesn't do much of anything; Porcupa and Pokey, who hide inside their prickly shells; and, finally, Wart, who manipulates everything negatively. At the end of the day, Mario and friends prevail, but only in dreams: Mario is still left to battle his inner demons.
