To be honest with you I was expecting this to be a complete pile of turtle droppings. So I was pleasantly suprised to find a good game lurking behind all the hype: this is a genuinely original and interesting product. The graphics are excellent, if somewhat on the small side, and the soundtrack is fairly close to the theme music. The four amphibians come across as being different, each having its own abilities and weak points. It's a shame the game doesn't have a two-player option. Other than that, it's a very playable game that deserves to sell by the lorryload.

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
With more of the comic book inserted than the cartoon spin-offs, this is one of two Ninja Turtle games to stay somewhat true to their roots (the other being the awful translation of Tournament Fighters on the Genesis). That makes this one appealing to some, though if they're not die hard gamers ready for the beating, that won't matter. With practice, it can be done (and it's worth it for the otherwise tolerable gameplay), but it's going to take a lot to pull it off.

Game Freaks 365
This game is difficult. I am not going to hide that. However, beating a difficult game brings a bigger sense of accomplishment than beating an easy one. If you are a fan of action games such as this, I recommend you pick this game up, even if you aren’t really a TMNT fan.

Again, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is best for fans of, or at least those who have seen, the TV cartoon series for they'll have the best time playing this game.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a decent game that has some adequate action sequences that get bogged down by the adventure aspect of play. nothing about the game is revolutionary, but it does possess some nice qualities and familiar characters.

Power Play

Just Games Retro
This isn't a bad game, but it's not a great Turtles game. We were expecting more when this one came out, something that really captured the license. As I admitted at the beginning, perhaps this is unfair. Yet it feels like there was a disconnect - for young Turtle fans, the release of this game was going to be a spectacular melding of the show and interactivity; the toy line come to life, and the chance to play as your favorite characters through all new scenarios. For Konami, it was a Tuesday. There's definitely none of the care of the later arcade titles; as if they weren't trying to please anyone with this game, or it was just another of a long list coming off the assembly line. I'm not saying it was a total cash-in, just that they didn't seem to understand the monumental expectations for the game. Or maybe they really wouldn't have cared either way.

The Video Game Critic
The graphics are mediocre at best. The turtles themselves look okay but some enemies can be hard to discern, and the fighting action is somewhat sloppy and plagued by heavy flicker. Swimming and driving stages effectively break up the monotony, although swimming through narrow caves of electrified seaweed is very difficult. TNMT's audio includes some catchy musical numbers that are bound to bring back memories for long-time NES gamers. It's rough around the edges, but I think this oldie is still worth checking out.

Kingdom of Desire
