Make no mistake: Thunder & Lightning is (appropriately) balls-to-the-wall difficult. There’s an overwhelming amount of strategy and luck that goes into toppling the 30 walls, but Mr Chin is determined, and above all, hungry. He’ll destroy the Thunderwarrior or starve trying.
While the title offers very little new to this
type of game, it plays very nicely and looks good to boot. The largest
problem is the control input, which lacks a certain happy medium
in speed, and some missed balls feel as though they had no chance
of being bounced back up onto the brick-filled playfield.
It might be true that this is the only game of its type for the NES. After all, Taito's Arkanoid is a little hard to come by these days. But so what? Thunder & Lightning doesn't present a different variation on the Arkanoid-style games -- it merely clones them and doesn't do an impressive job. There are so many better versions of this style of game on other systems; this very average game isn't worth tracking down.
