Aside from the Manta’s “Flying Nun” moments and the occasional secret corridor, Wrath of the Black Manta is a linear action platformer that will more than remind you of games you’ve already played. Traces of Ninja Gaiden (cutscenes), Rolling Thunder (enemy movements, doors, level outline) and Shinobi (Black Manta’s slow gait) can be seen throughout. Manta doesn’t reach the heights of the aforementioned games, but their influence mixed with the unique Magic Arts system makes for a compelling, challenging title in its own right.

Mean Machines (Nov, 1990)
There are many things I like about this game, such as the fabulous between-level screens which tell a story, the fact that there are loads of secret rooms, and that the gameplay is fun with quite a bit of variety - especially the madcap flying ninja level where he looks like he's been strapped to flying bed. However, these decent features are let down by the naff in-game graphics (the sprites are awful and the animation is poor) and the rather average sound. Black Manta is a pretty good Shinobi type game, and should be enjoyed by ardent beat 'em up fans.
Defunct Games (May 17, 2012)
With solid gameplay and good production value, Wrath of the Black Manta has a lot going for it. I was impressed with a lot of the bosses and the graphics are generally pretty good. Plus, the story elements are expertly done. Even though this game doesn't reach the level of Ninja Gaiden or Shinobi, all it would have taken was a sequel or two to really make this a franchise to remember. It's never too late, Taito.
Wrath of the Black Manta is not a fantastic game, but action fans shouldn't find this title disappointing.
Power Play (Aug, 1991)

Still cut-scenes reveal our hero to be a preppy blonde guy in a purple outfit. The crooks and hostages all sport huge hairdos from the 1970's, and I swear I saved John Davidson at one point. The first boss is named "Tiny", and he looks like a 20-foot tall version of Mini Me. One part of the game that threw me for a loop were the ninja flying around on blankets. When did ninja start doing that? Black Manta features distinctive background music that sounds great at first but gets on your nerves after a while. For those who played Wrath of the Black Manta as a kid, revisiting this game is sure to be very amusing. But even those new to the game are likely to appreciate its "so bad it's good" quality.
1UP! (Sep 24, 2012)
The music and graphics are fine, and the gameplay modes get switched up every once in a while, including a flying/shooter stage and rudimentary third-person action throwing stars at enemies in stationary rooms. There are even rudimentary cutscenes. Any positives, however, are marred by stiff controls and a very slow pace, as well as a higher difficulty than what you’d expect.

When you ignore the story, horrible graphics, and child-insulting dialogue, this game is really not that bad. The in-game functions are creative and very cool, especially for its time. I find it very upsetting that this game must be cursed due to the fact that its had so many drawbacks. Any way you look at it though, for what it's worth, Wrath of the Black Manta is probably the best 2 bucks I ever spent.
