A lackluster game when it comes to other games in the series, but it's still one of the better games on the NES. JohnLennon224 (16) 3.8 Stars3.8 Stars3.8 Stars3.8 Stars3.8 Stars

First, go beat both quests of The Legend of Zelda. Then go pick up this game. If you are only going to own 20 games for the NES this definitely should be one of them. It combines all the best elements of RPGs, adventure games and sidescrollers to provide one of the most fun experiences on the NES.
1UP! (Feb 05, 2007)

It's sad that this game wasn't more loved by players. Had it been, Nintendo might have been more encouraged to inject some originality into their other franchises. But even as the black sheep, The Adventure of Link deserves a place among its brothers, and the same respect.

Exploring the nooks and crannies of Hyrule is far more engaging, and while the dungeons lack the moody oppressiveness of the original’s, they’re no less compelling to explore. Frustrating combat mechanics be damned, Zelda II is the rare sequel that innovates successfully without destroying the previous game’s foundation.

I found the controls confusing at times, especially when it comes to the magic. Also it doesn't feel quite right to initiate a conversation with a townsfolk by hitting them with your sword. In terms of presentation, the graphics are well defined and the triumphant musical score is classic stuff. The third Zelda (Link to the Past, SNES, 1992) returned the series to the overhead style, giving some the impression that Zelda 2 was a misstep for the series. It was not. Zelda 2: Adventure of Link is immensely captivating and addictively fun. If not for the steep difficulty, I might even prefer this to the original game.
This is an absolute must for anyone who likes a large measure of RPG and adventure with their arcade game. Of the still relatively small number of games available for the Nintendo in the UK, Zelda II is definitely one of the top five.

In the end, although many prefer the original Zelda design over Zelda II, The Adventures of Link has always been a classic for Zelda fans everywhere.
Retroage (Jan 12, 2013)

Power Play (Jul, 1988)
Wer The Legend of Zelda mochte, wird Zelda II heiß und innig lieben.

I think Zelda 2 was pushed aside simply because it was something that no one expected. In actuality, it was a great game that gave you a nasty challenge while still proving to be entertaining.
Gaming since 198x (Dec 23, 2010)
NES Times (Jan 05, 2009)
When all is said and done, Zelda II is a good game that could have been done better. This title does offer a nice twist to the Zelda franchise and has some good features that carried over to the later titles. While the problems with starting over are frustrating and could have been addressed, there is still enough enjoyable gameplay to keep you going. Many gamers consider Zelda II to be the black sheep of the series, but if you give it a chance you'll find it still proves to be a fine adventure on the NES.
It is often called the black sheep of the Zelda series. It is also often called the worst game in the Zelda series. But let me say this; if Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the worst game in the Zelda series, that is a testament to the high quality of the series as a whole, because it certainly cannot be an insult to this game. Many fans of The Legend of Zelda were outraged by this game, but wrongfully so. This game, as much as any other, deserves to be named as a good entry into the world of gaming.
Adventure of Link the Zelda game that could have been groundbreaking. This game could have been the best nes game ever.Instead this game qualifys under the rank "Good".Now this game would have probaly gotten a even lower score if I wasn't such a hardcore Zelda fan. This game veers away from the traditional overhead view that we have come to expect from our rpg's.
Total! (Germany) (Jan, 1995)
Prices for Zelda II The Adventures of Link can be high since it is a sought after game. There are plenty of walkthroughs out there to help gamers that get stuck. Zelda II The Adventures of Link is also known to be very difficult in certain parts.
This definitely feels like the black sheep of the Zelda series -- it is the only game with experience points, the ability to learn and cast spells (as far as I know, although it's not the only game with a magic meter), and it's the only game that focuses so heavily on side-scrolling combat (occasionally, Link's Awakening for Game Boy delves into this territory, but only on specific occasions). I would also say that this is not a Zelda game for the faint-hearted or for those without decent hand-eye coordination. The difficulty level of this game is rather high, so with the exception of the prodigy child, children will likely be unable to complete this game. Leave it to the older crowd (me, the twenty-two year old who still has difficulty with even the most basic of controller functions) to finish this crazy adventure. Still, regardless of the stigma that this game has endured over the years, there is still much fun to be had with it.
Megablast (1992)
Dragon (Oct, 1993)
As sometimes happens with sequels, it is, alas, inferior to its predecessor, though still lots of fun.
Lens of Truth (Aug 28, 2011)
When it comes to Zelda games, this installment is most definitely the weakest Link (pun intended). Zelda II seems to have everything it needs to be a complete and enjoyable adventure, but it seems that nothing was put together how it should have been. With a much more linear game play and highly frustrating obstacles that are unnecessary in the long run, I can’t recommend this game to anyone other than die hard fans of the series. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t like the game is unplayable nor is it the worst game out there. I will however say that there are much better and more enjoyable games out there to invest your time into.
Just Games Retro (Apr 07, 2007)
If you like leveling up by hacking your way through countless repetitive enemies, if you like spending most of your time traveling to your objective rather than completing it, if random encounters make you all gooey inside, please enjoy Zelda II. I won’t think less of you. If, however, these are the same qualities that have kept you away from RPGs in general, give this one a pass. I’m willing to concede that there may be an enjoyable experience here, but if so, it takes a lot more time to find than I was willing to give.
