Obviously, the graphics are much better than those on the NES. Also, fire plays a much larger role in things, and can be built up to blast across the screen in Bomberman-esque fashion. Sure Neutopia could be considered a rip-off, but keep your ridiculing to a minimum and you have a high quality quest here.

Despite its derivative nature, Neutopia is irresistibly fun and its production qualities are impressive. The game saves your progress to memory, and even provides a password. I enjoyed Neutopia, but the stage design could have used some work. Often I couldn't figure out what to do next and ended up wandering in circles. Still, this is a quality adventure that Turbografx fans will savor.

See my rating. I would not give that rating to a bad game. Neutopia is excellent for little kids who don’t have the dexterous minds needed to enjoy Zelda, or for people who are new to action/RPG’s. It’s a justifiable purchase over Zelda with more variety in the worlds, enemies, and simplicity. But for those who have played Zelda, the difference between the two games is like the difference between George W. Bush and John Kerry: One panders to voters by pretending to be a Republican; the other is a real Republican. And when one pretends to be something the other one really is, the voters feel better just putting the real thing back into office for another four years. Therefore, this voter has spoken. Zelda for President!

Some folks are so desperate for a new Zelda experience that they'll learn how to write code and program their own homebrews. To save yourself time, just buy Neutopia. It will not obsess your thoughts or have you showing up to gaming conference dressed as the brave Jazeta, but it will temporarily fill in the gaps waiting for the next Hyrule adventure.

Hudson Soft gave TurboGrafx-16 owners a Legend of Zelda to call their own with Neutopia, an action adventure that was the spitting image of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic. You can see just how much of an imitation Neutopia is now that it's on the Wii's Virtual Console, but if you can look past the mimicry, you'll also find a rather engaging experience.

Overall, having OCD and making thorough maps is the best reason to play this title, but it's actually cute, somewhat engaging, and moderately enjoyable. That being said, Neutopia is a gem among Virtual Console titles, which typically range from total shite to utter garbage water if they're not one of the flagship titles like Mario or Sonic. I dropped about ten hours into this game, so clearly it's worth the price if you want to relive some Legend of Zelda glory days or like to get a good value for your money.
