The appealing soundtrack offers slight variations on classic Mario tunes, and enhanced digitized sound effects give familiar foes extra bite (pun intended). Not only is New Super Mario Bros. just as fun as the old games, but you have the luxury of saving your place after every few stages. Some have accused this game of being somewhat short and easy, but don't believe it. The game is an ideal length, and there are hidden areas, mini-games, and two-players modes to boot. Well designed, true to the original, and universally fun, New Super Mario Bros. defies criticism.
New Super Mario Bros. isn’t open-ended. It isn’t dark. It doesn’t contain gangsters. There’s no swearing. No police. No graffiti. There isn’t even anyone wearing camouflage, unless you include Bowser’s greenish tinge. But yet, New Super Mario Bros. is a fine, fine game ‘ to the point of eclipsing 90% of the titles that have been released in the last year. One of the finest, in fact. Remember the scores that Super Mario World used to obtain for the SNES ‘ then bear in mind that New Super Mario Bros. is BETTER.
Sure, New Super Mario Bros. isn't groundbreaking, and neither does it use many of the DS's unique capabilities, but it nevertheless delivers absolutely fantastic levels, graphics and gameplay throughout that won't disappoint any Mario veteran, or indeed any fan of 2D platformers. So, coming back to the 'thin line' that those 2D games must walk, it is to our good fortune that New Super Mario Bros. literally skips, hops and triple jumps all the way along that line, making this an absolutely essential purchase for every DS owner.
New Super Mario Bros. plays just like its esteemed predecessors: Run, jump, land on the enemy while collecting coins, power-ups like mushrooms (including one that makes Mario so enormous he can kick over those green pipes that festoon the landscape), flowers, and more. Gorgeously rendered in full 3D and making limited use of the stylus (you can now store a power-up for later use) the game offers all the fun and addictive play of the original titles, with the spit-shine and technology of today. It's a must own for the Nintendo DS, for kids six, to ninety-six. It's'a Mario, and it's'a brilliant!
Nintendo DSGaming Age
New Super Mario Bros. is simply the cherry on top of an already scrumptious library of games. With over 100 titles being released between June and December of this year, it?s never been a better time to be a Nintendo DS owner. Mario simply seals the deal. There are Warp Zones to find, secret paths to uncover, coins to collect, and 1-Ups to be earned. Don't miss out on my favorite game so far this year.
The DS' other features are used very sparingly. You get a nice progress bar to tell you how far you are in a level and you can use the touch screen to drop a stored item onto Mario. These gripes are very very minor and should not stop every single human being from playing this game. It is an instant classic and no gamer should be without New Super Mario Bros.
There’s even multi-player action if you happen to have a fellow DS owning chum around. The best handheld title of the year so far.
As always with Mario games, the Mushroom Kingdom offers tremendous replay value — a simpering princess
who can be rescued in a little under five hours — but with dozens of bonus levels and secrets to unlock, you’ll be coming back for more. With an hilarious two-player mode that can be played via the handheld’s Wi-Fi connection, New Super Mario Bros. is an instant classic, and another triumph for Nintendo’s portable powerhouse.
This is the Mario game to buy if you're giving a Nintendo DS this holiday season. It's a lot of fun and will please players from ages 9 to 90.
Remember the first time you picked up the original Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System? As we all were, you were blown away. Fast forward a console generation and put yourself back in the seat the first time your jaw dropped to Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. Same reaction, I'm sure. If you ever wished for the next leap in Mario side-scrolling greatness, your game has arrived. You will buy New Super Mario Bros. Not only does it pay homage to its roots, but finds a way to pioneer new angles and revives side-scrolling bliss across the video game universe. It doesn't matter if you're a hardcore gamer or a gamer that current generations forgot, New SMB is for you.

"New Super Mario Bros." mostra que remakes são viáveis, quando bem feitos, e podem, sim, ainda que não apresentem inovações radicais, transformarem-se em jogos indispensáveis para uma plataforma. É exatamente o caso do game no DS: quem jogou "Mario" nos velhos tempos, provavelmente se emocionará ao "reviver" certas emoções tanto tempo depois; quem não viveu a época, por sua vez, poderá experimentar um pouco dessa magia. Uma aventura curta e fácil, mas mágica e necessária.
Overall, it is a fantastic game for all ages. It's impossible not to recommend it to absolutely anyone.

As I said, this game is a credit to Nintendo and after seeing what they can do when they put their minds to it on a hand held, you can’t help but get excited about what they have planned for the Wii. Not only is this a game that every DS owner should have, it’s a game that every gamer should have. At the end of the day it’s all about the gameplay and New Super Mario Bros. is crammed with it.
Nintendo DSPortable Review
Overall, this is an excellent game that any platformer and/or Mario fan should own. They could have done much to improve it, such as using many of the gimmicks more often, and making it less linear, but the good far outweighs the bad. Here’s hoping that we see a New Super Mario Bros. 2 that fixes the flaws of this game.
If Nintendo wanted to be really retro, it would release an NES-colored DS Lite and include this game as a pack-in. Since that's probably not going to happen, everyone will just have to buy New Super Mario Bros. separately. And buy it you should -- it's easily one of the best titles available for the DS. Super Princess Peach was a solid platformer, but it was just a warm up for the real deal here. And now with Yoshi's Island 2 on the way, it looks like quality Nintendo platformers may be the new WWII first-person shooters.

It has been a long time since we’ve seen a new sidescroller with Mario as the star. However, if New Super Mario Bros is any indication of what will come in the future on the DS, the wait was well worth it. NSMB manages to blend elements from the past seamlessly with gameplay technologies of today. Familiar enemies, powerups and levels all mesh with new elements to form what is the best Mario game to date.

New Super Mario Bros. is new in looks, feel and gameplay but thankfully we still get to visit Mario's old super stomping ground. This game is reason enough to purchase the DS system if, gosh forbid, none of the other killer Nintendo titles have tickled your fancy yet.

If you've ever enjoyed playing a Mario Bros. game and New Super Mario Bros. isn't already lodged into your DS Lite, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy today. Don't wait for your paycheck: credit cards were invented for this purpose. After all, New Super Mario Bros. is the product of happy little game developing elves, and therefore cannot be missed. An incredible game, an incredible bargain. Keep them coming Nintendo. More New Mario.
Rabid Super Mario fans have been waiting over a decade for an adventure like New Super Mario Bros. Mario’s spin-off exploits are good fun, but the beloved plumber has always been in top form when he’s running and jumping from platform to platform in search of that princess in another castle. Happy days are here again at long last. Both Mario’s long-time admirers and amateur plumbers will find plenty to love in this new adventure and it is highly recommended to all.

New Super Mario Bros. is a great addition to anyone’s DS library. The game manages to recreate the awesomeness of past titles while making sure it feels like a new game. It’s definitely recommended and I’ll even go as far as to say that it is essential to have in anyone’s DS library.

New Super Mario Brothers is a truly a fantastic game in all respects. Whether you've been playing the Mario games for the last twenty years, or whether this is your very first Mario title, you will not be disappointed. This new installment in the series seamlessly blends elements from the entire series, and stays true to the format of Mario platformers before it.

The release of New Super Mario Bros marks almost fifteen years since the last time Mario side-scrolled his way into a brand new 2D adventure with Super Mario World on the SNES. So was it worth the wait? The answer to that question is a resounding yes.
Damn, does it feel good to go back to Mario's roots. Don't get me wrong - Super Mario 64 was an important and integral step for Nintendo's plumber hero to take, what with the company essentially being the trailblazer in the world of 3D platforming. But in moving forward, rising expectations pretty much dictated that Nintendo shouldn't look back, so the classic sidescrolling formula was simply relegated to "classic" status, only returning in retro repeats of existing games on current systems and, occasionally, as spin-off franchises for other Nintendo characters. An official Super Mario game would have to be something special for it to exist on a current Nintendo system, which is why the release of New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS is so significant: it absolutely is something special.
Nintendo DSChrist Centered Game Reviews
New Super Mario Bros. is a very good entry to the 2D world of Mario-style platformers. Nintendo has produced another top-notch, well done game that is worthy of their prime franchise. The way they dealt with Bowser's initial demise surprised me a little bit, but if you can get past that and the ghost stuff, it's an exceptional production and very well done.
Last time we met her, Princess Peach proved to the world that she can be a tough little biatch. While Mario got captured by Bowser, she came to the rescue to kicked major ass! So what happened next? The girl gets herself captured again and it's up to Mario (again) to free her. Stupid woman!

Title after title, game after game, Mario just gets better with age. Never slowing down, never faltering: New Super Mario Bros. redoes the past with new action and some new surprises, once more in retro-materialized gold. Whether you're from the old school or a student of the new school, you're going to love New Super Mario Bros. no matter what.
Someone once said that everything old shall be new again. Well, somebody must have gotten an early copy of the New Super Mario Bros. game for the DS because quite frankly I haven't had so much fun in 2006. New Mario Bros. takes place in the very familiar 2D world of side-scrolling platformers. Once again, Bowzer has kidnapped Princess Peach and once again are Italian plumber friend is up to his eyeballs in turtles, goombas, bottomless pits, skeletons, traps, koopas and Bowzer. Thank the gaming gods for this one folks, it's time for some old-fashioned fun.

New Super Mario Bros. marks a momentous occasion in video games: an all-new, side-scrolling action/platformer starring the plumber that put the genre on the map. It’s the equivalent of a Beatles reunion, except everybody’s still alive and unsullied by our memories of crappy solo records. It’s a bit hard to separate my expectations of this game from the reality of playing, but honestly it feels like a triumph – a tour de force of old-school platforming.
However, anyone who enjoys platforming/side scrolling games or was part of the NES days should really look into this game. Not only them, but if you’ve been looking for a new DS game New Super Mario Bros. is it. Splendid gameplay, music, controls, graphics mixed with a retro yet new feeling is excellent. Nintendo really hit a bull’s eye with this game, and if you haven’t picked it up yet, I recommend doing so now. Don’t miss out on this superb title, exclusively for the Nintendo DS.
New sets out to simply give gamers more of what they want--more enemies, more levels, more bosses, more high-quality Mario. One can almost hear the trumpets as the classic platformer makes its triumphant return. Yet, to those yearning for a real evolution of the genre, New may feel like a step backwards. The aforementioned sticks-in-the-mud may just have to wait until Super Paper Mario for their day, running through Yoshi's Island once more in the meantime. Everyone else can bask in the glory of a new Super Mario Bros. At least Nintendo can name their games right.

So in many ways this point is negated. What the game does right is take advantage of the updated graphical capabilities of the DS in order to help move the 2D Mario franchise further, and it does it well propelling this game to the status of one of the most fun of its types on the system. If you have a DS, and you like Mario or platform games, then do yourself a favor and make sure you pick up this DS gem.

If you're looking for a nice trip down memory lane, New Super Mario Bros. is a great history lesson, harkening back to the side-scrolling days of yore. Despite the title, it doesn't feel terribly "new" but it's definitely fun, and with the added mini-games and multiplayer features, it's well worth your time.
New Super Mario Bros. is simply one of the greatest platformers ever created, and easily one of the best games on the Nintendo DS. This game has some of the most creative level designs ever and it controls flawlessly. If ever there was doubt that Nintendo could craft another 2D platforming classic, it should be put to rest now because this game, despite its relative brevity, is absolutely exceptional.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that New Super Mario Bros. isn't going to give you that same fuzzy warm feeling inside that you would get playing Super Mario Bros. in the 1980s or eating a Toaster Strudel for the first time. It is very much its own game that stands on its own two feet, if a video game had feet, and the experience you have with it will definitely be unique. Despite its flaws, it's a solid descendant of platforming from long ago. New Super Mario Bros. is cheerful and charismatic, and it will provide a challenge to gamers both novice and expert alike. Any DS (or 3DS) owner would be foolish not to add this to their collection.
With the beautifully modeled characters and landscapes (desert, underwater, ice, haunted, ect.) highlighted by a 2D environment, the game is as noticably visually stunning as ever. If you like to explore the realm of Mario, you'll get hours upon hours of enjoyment out of this game. I know I did. Hell, I'd live in the Mushroom Kingdom if I could. The only downside to it would be I could never pee anywhere... everything has eyes...

New Super Mario Bros. is a testament to games today. It proves that a simple style that we once loved and cherished can still be pulled off in today’s world of flashy visuals and 80-hour game time. The level design is fantastic, the music is nostalgic and the sheer joy I get while playing this game is indescribable. If more companies paid attention to what makes gaming fun and stick to the basics we could easily have more masterpieces like this one, but for now enjoy it while you can because the next 2D Mario may very well be 15 years away from now.

A platformer with some downs alongside plenty of ups, nevertheless New Super Mario Bros. has 'Must Have' written all over it.
And there we have it, the first true side-scrolling Mario since Super Mario World on the SNES and it almost reaches the same level of quality. The changes to the formula fit in with the existing world just fine and whilst some of the spark from SMB3/SMW may be missing, you will be hard-pressed to find a better platform adventure than this.
Overall, NEW Super Mario Bros takes the place of Kirby as the top plat former on the DS, but man did it have to fight. This game does excel 2D Mario games in a new and exciting direction and with 800,000 copies sold in the first week in Japan alone, I think a sequel is fairly certain (we can hope). The bottom line is you must own this. It’s your duty as a DS owner.
Regardless of age or experience, NSMB has something about it that will appeal to all that play it. The ingenuity of design, the sheer level of fun, the warmth of nostalgia and the relief that 2D gaming is still alive and kicking, all combine to make NSMB an unmissable experience and show Nintendo are still masters of the platform game. Evidently this edition has been targeted slightly towards the less-abled player, but that doesn't matter too much when it's a joy to play from start to end.

New Super Mario Bros. probably won’t go down in history as anything more than a two-month bestseller for the Nintendo DS, but it’s a fun and nostalgic experience that any handheld owner needs to have. In fact, I actually like this game more than I like Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2. And any game that can be better than those two is… well… pretty darn good.

Fitting, then, that Nintendo saved some of his finest moments for this diminutive game-card - which, along with the emergence of DS and Wii, some have marked as a bookend to a period of dynastic chaos. The balance could yet shift again. But New Super Mario Bros., with its faultless controls, effortless variety and deceptive simplicity, argues that while market ratios can sweep back and forth and erupt and diminish in unexpected ways, the balance of ideas can always be relied upon to settle in one place: in the welcoming arms of a friendly little company from Kyoto called Nintendo.
Frankly, for all of my nitpicking, I almost always had a smile on my face. Mario's controls are so well-honed that players can have fun simply running around. They'll just have more of it if they actually play the game. New Super Mario Bros. tweaks "cameo" gameplay elements from so many sources that it is consistently fresh and constantly changing, and that, above all else, is what makes a genuine Mario game so incredible.
Nintendo DSStuff Magazine
With limited save opportunities, you'll need to leave your DS on 24 hours a day just so you don't have to play through the game's more frustrating levels again and again. Still, this is easily one of the best new-school/old-school games we've seen so far this year—on any system. Buy.

It's unlikely that anyone will put this at the top of his or her list of favorite Mario games. It does definitely deserve to be called a Mario game, however, and that's more than enough to make it a required purchase for any and all DS owners.
What we have in New Super Mario Brothers is a gateway to the past, though painted pretty for the present. The gameplay is totally familiar and though the additional items in the game really do nothing to make the game more entertaining, the overall adventure is well though out and designed. The graphics are simply stunning, as is the soundtrack (though not in a good way). If you're looking for a solid platformer, this really is it and it is a spring board through which Nintendo can rejuvenate the iconic nature of one of video gaming's most beloved heroes, Mario.
Nintendo DSThe Next Level
There's a reason Mario sold millions of Nintendo consoles to a generation of new gamers. There's a reason why his games continue to entertain both nostalgic grownups and their young children 20 years after he saved his first princess. New Super Mario Bros is an inspired bit of fan-service that proves that the formula still works. It makes all that was old new again, and has been handled with all the delicate care and attention to detail that it deserves. Indeed, it may be the aging plumbers finest hour; a rare opportunity for a mascot past his prime to relive his glory days once again. Hopefully it won't be his last.
New Super Mario Brothers is one of the best, if not the best game on the DS right now. Nintendo has really captured the essence and features of what makes the series so popular and why it is one of the most revered and well recognized game series ever made. If you own a DS you must own this game, and if you don’t own one, well it’s almost good enough to enforce a purchase.
"NEW Super Mario Bros" would be a no-brainer 5/5 if it were not for the stupid save system. It forces you to play the game too fast, and also means that you are unable to just pick up and play, which is a great shame. If you could save after every level, the game would be easier, yes, but I like to take my time, and I don't always want to be forced to play for 20 minutes or more, EVERY TIME. It really ruins it for me. I found myself playing the mini games more because they do only take a couple of minutes, and you don't have to play through five levels in one go! This game is awesome, really, really awesome in every way, but it does require patience and time, which it would not if the saves were better.
Also the difficulty is out a bit, but that's not a major issue. Still, if you don't mind playing in 20 min sessions or more, and you can sit in a still area (i.e. you always play at home and not on the way to work etc) then you are in for the best 2-D platformer out on ANY system!

Was soll ich sagen?

While I still hold Super Mario World as the best 2D Mario game, with Super Mario Bros. 3 as the runner up, New Super Mario hits a close third. But it does have much more replay value than the other two, as you could easily play this one a few times though without the risk of it getting stale.
Nintendo has once again saved some of their best work for their effervescent plumber. New Super Mario Bros. treads the retro platformer line beautifully, adding just enough originality and imagination to the mix. Gameplay is perfectly balanced, always satisfying and will keep you coming back for more. If you've just picked up a DS Lite, or have been a DS owner since the beginning, this is a game that you really must own. It represents the very best of Nintendo and is a perfect handheld title.

The upshot is, you won't be disappointed with New Super Mario Bros. even if it doesn't use all the features of the DS. It has everything you want from a platforming Mario Bros. game and then some.
New Super Mario Bro's can never capture the feeling of the first time you played the original Mario Brothers games, but it can still offer up some classic light hearted Mario fun. The new moves, power-ups and graphics are just enough to make this game feel original while keeping its roots in the past. Even though New Super Mario Bros. isn't a revolution, it's still a great fun platforming game. You would have to be crazy not to give this new rendition of Super Mario Bros. a spin. It's new, it's old, it's an instant classic all over again, welcome back Mario.

Let's start with a sweeping generalization more true than not about game journalists: It's tough to review Mario games. Mario, his hapless brother Luigi, that incompetent Princess Peach, even mean ol' Bowser, they all hold a very special place in the hearts of many of us. More often than not, Mario is the inspiration for entering this field. You thought it was Edward R. Murrow? Did he ever break a brick with his head? 'Nuff said.
Nintendo DSPAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
With the 2001 release of the Game Boy Advance, many Nintendo fans carried high hopes that they would be treated to some all-new two dimensional Mario adventures. Five years and four ports later, fans of Mario and the gang have finally got what they’ve been wishing for. It hasn’t been an easy road for fans of the Italian plumber – many were disappointed with Super Mario Sunshine, while others felt Nintendo was exploiting their mascot, spreading him too thin over Mario sports and Party games, as well as lending him and the other Mushroom Kingdom crew out for cameos in some of EA’s more extreme titles. However, Nintendo has shown that they are well aware of what the Mario fans desire – he is still their biggest draw, even after 20 years. They knew what they needed to do, and they’ve done it. As Apollo Creed said in Rocky III, “To get it back, you’ve gotta go all the way back to the beginning.”
Despite the sort of weird title, New Super Mario Bros. is exactly what it sounds like. It's a new Super Mario Bros. game that pulls off the series' classic 2D, side-scrolling gameplay without feeling contrived or like a needless nostalgia trip. While there's plenty of old memories referenced in this game, it is most definitely new. You rarely see 2D platformers at all these days, and it's even rarer when it's done right. While experienced players might blow through the game quickly, New Super Mario Bros. is still completely awesome and absolutely necessary.

This game's title could not be more definitive, as the Mario's latest adventure really does return the plumbers to their super roots. While Mario may be rendered in 3D, his game is totally old-school. Running and jumping once again reign supreme, ousting punches, air meters and all that other froufrou for delicious mushrooms. Mario handles with traction somewhere between Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64, and his jump is close to SMB3's but with a slower descent. Of course, he also brings some of the new moves he has learned over the years, such as triple jumps and ground pounds. New Super Mario Bros. (NSMB) features the best wall jump yet—there is precious little more satisfying than saving oneself from a perilous pit with a knee-jerk wall-jump. Mario may not control as he did in any of the classic Mario games, but he still feels perfect.

Again, it’s been eleven years, and we’re proud to say that Mario is back and better than ever. The game has a large number of maps to explore, goombas to jump on, and new memories to reminisce about when you talk about the greatest Mario games in recent years. So is it worth the money? It’s worth getting a DS, that’s for sure. But if you’re one of those junkies that doesn’t pay full price for a game because it hardly makes use of the system’s “capabilities”, then fine; be that junky. It's a fantastic game that deserves more than anything to sit in your DS library.

New Super Mario Bros. successfully cobbles together elements from its NES, SNES and 64-bit predecessors and applies them to solid, although not stellar or particularly novel, level design. Some of the new elements are questionable, but the nostalgia factor is a 9.5 and an abundance of little multiplayer diversions round the package out nicely. And hey, it’s-a him.

It’s just the overall feel that Nintendo have nailed though - Mario moves exactly how he should, each jump landing where you expect, with every death nobody’s fault but your own. It’s a narcotically-addictive sugar-rush high right up there with the series’ best, which is quite some achievement given the competition. In the end, while some might prefer the more varied Super Mario World, or the pastel-coloured genius of Yoshi’s Island, when bringing a true classic bang up to date, New Super Mario Bros. is proof positive that the slightest adjustment is all that’s needed.

With summer here there is going to be more gaming on the go as handhelds get taken on road trips. And just in time, Nintendo has given us a blast from the past to take along and relive the fun of our wasted youths. The game mechanics show a bit of their age, but it is still a lot of great, simple fun.

You’ll have fun with New Super Mario Bros., too, though maybe not as much as you did oh, twenty, ten, or five years ago. The basic premise - plumber saves princess by killing turtles - is still bizarrely strong, even if our little mustachioed protagonist is starting to show his age. The versus mode breathes some fresh air into his little lungs, but this latest foray has us wondering: can Mario ever truly be new again?

New Super Mario Bros.
At the end of the day, the game is still a platformer. Like Super Paper Mario on the GameCube, which looks freaking fantastic. You still go from left to right, stomping on enemies and saving the princess. Still, New Super Mario Bros. made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. For me, it’s like going over to a friend’s house and seeing that their kid has a Transformer. Pick it up, and your hands magically remember how to change it from a train into a dinosaur or what-the-fuck-ever. The point is that playing this game is nothing if not comforting. It’s a warm blanket and cup of hot chocolate on a freezing winter evening. Oh, it’s still an evil sadist bastard mother fucker. But kind of like the way grandma was.

For pure gameplay perfection it's hard to fault the satisfaction of flipping your way through a stage; finally reaching that last Star Coin or discovering a hidden area for the first time - let's just hope it's not too long before we see the Bros in action again.
The good far outweighs the bad... I can only hope that Nintendo sees this as something worth doing: New sidescrolling Mario games are much more appreciated than porting the old ones over like they did on the GBA. Since I fall into the camp that sees Super Mario World as the greatest in a long series of fantastic games, I came away just a little bit disappointed: maybe we can hope for a New Super Mario World one day? Until then, New Super Mario Bros is definitely worth the price of admission, and in my eyes, it's definitely worth buying a DS Lite for. I know I haven’t looked back, and I probably won’t for a long time.

Is it worth the thirty bucks that you’ll have to fork over? Depends how you like your games. The mishmash of a solid platforming formula with a fairly easy difficulty and a lot of content makes this game hard to review. But when everything’s said and done, you’ve got the first 2D Mario platformer in ages. You can’t go too wrong with that.
I've just got to say: Welcome back, Mario. Each day without you was like another dagger through my (S)NES, and your return is triumphant if short-lived. Your mini-games are a weird and wonderful filler and your new power-ups are entertaining but I'm glad they don't plague this new adventure of yours. I'm sure your universal fan-base will be dancing with glee at your return, and I can only hope you come back again soon and stay for longer this time. Get this game.

Nintendo's first side-scrolling Mario game in 15 years mixes, matches and mashes elements of the entire gamut of Super Mario games into one pleasing package. A must-have for fans of the plumber and his pals.
Nintendo DSBinary Joy
Overall New Super Mario Bros took a long time coming and although Mario 64 did a great job in progressing the series to the next level its great to see him return to his original roots as for me the 2D Mario games still provide the most appeal. Nintendo have done a great job however making a game that will appeal to both loyal fans of the series and new players alike and if it weren`t for the relatively short main game Mario`s latest outing would be flawless. As it stands the game has great visuals and audio and hardcore gamers and anyone else willing to put in the effort to find all its secrets will absolutely adore it from start to finish.
The bottom line is that New Super Mario Bros. could have been a better game than it ended up being. Nintendo fans will need to temper some of their near-boundless enthusiasm for 2D platforming or else the package will end up disappointing them. In truth no one should be disappointed at all. The game is fantastic, and deserves every hour of playtime it has received from me, and will be receiving plenty more before it gets retired to the shelf. Still, I hope that somewhere deep within Nintendo a team is beginning prepwork on Newer Super Mario Bros., and that the game will take this excellent groundwork to create a game that can be held alongside Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3.

It’s an indication of just how great a series is to say that one of the weaker titles is still miles ahead of almost anything else in the genre. New Super Mario Bros. definitely doesn’t live up to the standards set by the games it apes, but there’s still no better sidescroller to be found on the DS.
New Super Mario Bros. should be what Nintendo focus on with the Mario franchise, building on what they've started here - simplicity, accessibility, replayability. Forget his party, golf and tennis games, if Nintendo released platformers like this more often, we'd be very happy indeed.

Classic is not the original Big Momma's House or Yahoo Serious' shining career. A true gem of yesteryear is Super Mario Bros., which has been polished 20 years later for another generation to lose itself in (you know, like a really good porn plot).
Did you ever have a teacher or professor who graded you down because even though you did a great job on your work, he felt you "weren't living up to your potential?" It was flattering, sure, because it meant he thought highly of you -- but it was also sort of infuriating, because his backhanded compliment was screwing up your GPA.
Once you play New Super Mario Bros., though, you might have a better understanding of where he was coming from. As Mario's first old-fashioned 2D platformer in 14 years, NSMB is practically guaranteed to be a good time for newcomers and old-timers alike. But it's hard to shake the sensation that Mario could do better.
Before you play this game, think to yourself that you will be playing a game on the same level of quality as Mario 1, not Mario 3 or Mario World. Then you will probably enjoy your time with this game a little more.
Nintendo DSSaving Progress
This difficulty, though, makes New Super Mario Bros. a 2D Mario platformer for the new Nintendo - a game anyone can and will pick up and play. It’s also important because, with its ten-and-a-half million sales to date, it’s making Mario games cool again (many found Sunshine to be a disappointment), leading right into the release of Super Mario Galaxy for Wii. It’s not a classic like many Mario platformers are, but it’s a solid platformer all around and a game every DS owner should have in their collection.
I like this game a lot. I just expected better, and so should you. Play it and enjoy it for the great game it is, but don't mistake it for near-perfection.

Writing a review is not about being clever or brilliant. It's not about using your thesaurus ad nauseum, or trying to impress others, or vomiting every single thought you have on a subject onto a page. It's about giving an open and forthright view whether people like it, or whether it fits into the personal constraints the reviewer tries to impose.
Nintendo DSDigital Press - Classic Video Games
A necessary criticism aside, this latest romp is a success. The level design alone sells this game, and it's criminal not to appreciate how it works. It's not the game you've been hopelessly waiting for. It's the one where you want to overlook the flaws so it can be that game you're still hopelessly waiting for.
You'll also be glad to know there are no un-necessary or gimmicky uses of the touchscreen just for the sake of it. In actual fact, the touch screen can only actually be used to activate saved power ups with a quick jab of the right thumb, or for controlling the stylus based mini games included from the Mario 64 DS remake as an added bonus.
And that's about it really. The title New Super Mario Bros. is the perfect moniker for the game as that's precisely what it is. A New Super Mario Bros. game. The game isn't - and rightly so - a massive departure from previous titles. If you want change, go and play Super Princess Peach, Kirby's Canvas Curse or Sonic Rush. Mario is and will always be the epitome of 2d platform purity so if you liked the previous games, you'll be as smitten as I am.
With Nintendo recently talking about how innovation is key when showing off the Nintendo Wii, or even when DS games like Nintendogs and Brain Age are mentioned you'd think the programmers behind New Super Mario Bros. would of gotten a memo but I guess I need to tell them: you need to innovate, not imitate! Oh well, at least they imitated from one of the best video games ever made.
If this game weren't Mario, if it were just some other bland character prancing around through the 60+ stages, I'd probably go as far as to say I enjoyed it. But it is Mario, and, yes, I'm probably a snob, but it really saddens me to see him used as anything less than the defining example of the genre.
