If you like loud, fast racing, jump into one of the Newman Haas racing team's Indy cars and hit the track! This cart offers some of the best 16-bit racing of the season.

Unlike Acclaim's NFL Quarterback Club cartridges, the Genesis and SNES versions of Newman Haas IndyCar Racing look quite different once you get past the menus. The SNES game looks like most of the early video racing games of the past, with the "banded" roadway scrolling underneath the cars to simulate speed. The Genesis version, on the other hand, has a more realistic road surface and features numerous scaling roadside objects, from buildings and signs to - of all things - cactuses at the Phoenix circuit!

The game's IndyCar license allows you to compete against your favorite real-life drivers on a variety of authentic road and oval Indy-Car racetracks. While both games offer challenging action, the SNES version is the easier of the two, since it only slows you down if you crash into a roadside obstacle, instead of stopping you, as in the Genesis game.

If you have to race every available game, there's decent fun here. But this game isn't as successful as Mansell has been in real life. Overall, it finishes back in the pack.
So overall, we get a rather tepid mix of a racing game, boasting a few nice features and decent race controls buried in a bland presentation, with many options but few diversions... ...kind of like real Indy car racing, actually.
GenesisGame Players
If you don't yet have a racing game on your shelf (and you really shouldn't have one), this one could do you some justice. But if you're like me and you've been playing these games for years, try to steer clear of this one.
