NFL 2K3 is almost a completely different game on the Xbox. Animations are more fluid, graphics are more detailed, and game play is tighter. The aspects of presentation designed to make each game appear as though it is taking place on an ESPN broadcast are more convincing because of better animation. The sportscaster's mouth moves in time to his speech, for example. Clouds moving overhead cast shadows on the field, and players' helmets reflect the stadium. Players are more responsive to user controls and also seem more intelligent when not controlled by the user. NFL 2K3 includes online gaming for the Xbox and PS2.
XboxGamePro (US) (Aug 12, 2002)
NFL 2K3 is a straight-ahead, hard-as-knuckles football game. Some players might prefer Madden's interface because it tends to be friendlier to average players and rookies. NFL 2K3 is definitely less forgiving if you don't concentrate and come ready to play. For most hardcore football gamers, that ain't bad at all.
GameCubeGamePro (US) (Aug 12, 2002)
NFL 2K3 continues to make a strong run for the video game football title. With smart A.I., great controls, and a take-no-prisoners approach to football, it should earn All-Pro status again.

PlayStation 2PSX Extreme (Aug 16, 2002)
The game has everything you've ever wanted from a pigskin sim, and perhaps more. The online mode is not time limited, so servers will not be shut down when NFL 2K4 hits shelves next summer. The commentary annihilates whatever Madden 2003 does, the controls are just spot on and present the ideal feel for the entire game. As a whole package, NFL 2K3 can't really get too much better. Perhaps, somewhere there is some room for improvement, but apparently, that space is too thin to slip a knife though.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Aug 13, 2002)
Sega's NFL 2K3 for the PlayStation 2 features a number of improvements on last year's game. The ESPN license has now been integrated into the series, providing the game with a TV-style presentation. The graphics have been significantly improved to the point that a large portion of the players can be recognized by their faces as opposed to the numbers on the back of their jerseys. Online play is already up and ready for the August 27 release of the PlayStation 2 network adapter, and, most importantly, the gameplay has been honed to near perfection.

I realize I spent the majority of my time in this review complaining about how tough playing against the computer can be. I guess I’m just upset cause I’m a veteran NFL 2Ker and I’m getting slapped around. Correction, I was getting slapped around. The addition to customize the difficulty was smart on VC behalf, and really gives the player the most control over the game. In the end, NFL 2K3 is just a very solid football game, and arguably the best available this season. It’s the best playing NFL 2K title ever, even with it’s few problems, the audio and visuals are unmatched by the competition, and with the acquisition and exceptional use of the ESPN license, the presentation is the best all around. And let’s not forget a vastly improved franchise mode and full Xbox Live support (November 15th can’t come any faster!). Basically, any pigskin fanatic can’t go wrong picking this game up, and in fact, I highly recommend it.

If your looking for a game that redefines the football genre year after year, go with NFL 2K3. If you want a game that is the same every year, and offers nothing new, then go with Madden.
PlayStation 2PGNx Media (Aug 18, 2002)
I've always been a madden fanatic. It has the best graphics, gameplay, and authenticity of any football game on any system. At least until nfl 2k3 was released. The player models are on par with their real-life counterparts with facial features and bodysize almost all of the time (some players appear to have shoulders the size of watermelons). Most readers are looking for a comparision (I have to give the edge to madden because I'm an gameplay fanatic that can't stnd players turning on a dime, the open field speed seems way to slow as well). That withstanding, if you don't mind semi-artificial moves, NFL 2k3 is the way to go. It has incredible tackle animations, announcing to rival most televised games, and a smartly used ESPN lisense.
PlayStation 2GameZone (Sep 02, 2002)
When Sega announced that they were going to go multi-platform last year, football players were skeptical how their splendid football game would do on the PlayStation 2. Even with a shortened development cycle, Visual Concepts did a great job with NFL 2K2, even though it had a few minor problems. This time they had a full development cycle and the addition of ESPN style presentation added to the mix; which they worked in wonderfully to give PlayStation 2 owners another wonderful football game to play on Sony's Black Box.
PlayStation 2IGN (Aug 09, 2002)
And then it was a two-horse race. Let's face it. Ever since SEGA's NFL2K series came on to the scene, it's been slowly climbing toward the summit of simulation style videogame fooball, ever striving to overtake EA's Madden. You can't have a conversation about one game without the other coming up. While some have contended that the 2K series has already surpassed Madden, that assessment was premature. The engine was previously too unforgiving, too arcadey, and at times, too cheap.
XboxGaming Age (Aug 26, 2002)
Football games improve every year, sometimes by a wide margin, but usually just a little bit here and there. There are always issues that arise after playing a game for months on end, and most of us wonder, "Why can't they fix that?" This year they did. Sega has made seemingly all the right tweaks. It's not perfect, but it's as close as anyone has ever come. If you're a die-hard Madden fan, this is the year to give something else a try. This might not be the year that Sega's series tops Madden in the sales charts, but we might look back at 2003 as the year Sega's NFL 2k3 became the better game.
PlayStation 21UP (2002)
Even though other parts are good, the running in the 2K series has always looked awkward and robotic to me. A lot of the moves (including tackles) were stiff and unrealistic, too (you can see where I'm going with this). This year, however, it looks fantastic; the boys have traded in their Frankenstein ways for smoother animation. It seems like a small detail, but everything counts when you're battling Madden for the top spot. As for gameplay, I have no complaints. Taking control of your players goes off without a hitch. Perfecting your pick-off jump while striding tight with a receiver is great fun. On the whole, I still prefer Madden, but 2K3 is a close second.
XboxGame Revolution (Sep, 2002)
Sega Sports' NFL 2K3 for the Xbox is a great football game. The money and effort that clearly went into the production were not poorly spent, as they produced one of the finest football games available. Touchdown, Sega.
XboxGameSpy (Sep 05, 2002)
Bottom line, if you're an NFL fan, and career play is important to you, you owe it to yourself to give this game a rental at the very least -- especially once Xbox Live hits the streets and online play joins the mix. The pace of play is a little bit slower than the competition (Fever and Madden on the Xbox), but if anything, that's a plus. Try it. Rent it. Chances are, you'll wind up buying it ... and you won't be sorry you did.
XboxGameSpot (Aug 12, 2002)
There's very little, if anything, to really complain about in NFL 2K3. The graphics look great, the commentary is interesting and sounds natural, and, most importantly, the game features balanced offensive and defensive gameplay that does an excellent job of mimicking the nuances of the actual sport. In addition, the ESPN license has gone a long way toward giving the game some personality. You'll be treated to the ESPN-style presentation, complete with split-screen replays and music from ESPN programming, which simply tops off an incredible game that any football fan would do well to buy.
XboxIGN (Aug 09, 2002)
In the final analysis, NFL 2K3 is a great football game that inches ever closer to football simulation nirvana. The inclusion of several key features, especially this year's multi-faceted Franchise Mode, makes huge strides over last year's offering. Invariably, there's going to be argument and consternation about the final score, which I'll tell you now is an 9.1. To be sure, there will be a rush to the IGN Boards to discuss and (in the case of some fans) lament this score. The main point of contention will be the fact that last year's version earned a 9.0 on PS2, and an 8.3 on Xbox. It did not make an appearance on the Cube in 2K2. In addition, you'll probably be asking yourself how this game stacks up to Madden this year. There is but one thing to say: different reviewers, different reviews.
GameCubeGame Revolution (Sep, 2002)
NFL 2K3 is overwhelmingly good. This game is one of the finest gridiron products on the market with great gameplay, smooth graphics and options that would take all day to describe. While perhaps not a perfect football game (if there is such a thing), NFL 2K3 definitely raises the bar. This game is as good as Gameday is bad, and that's reeeeally good.
GameCubeGameSpot (Aug 12, 2002)
NFL 2K3 delivers just about everything a football fan could want. There's a deep franchise mode, the gameplay is excellent, and the ESPN license has been integrated quite well. You'll hear familiar music from various ESPN shows and get some of the ESPN style during the actual game in the form of split-screen replays. In addition, there are some nice little touches like weekly wrap-ups that include brief comments on each game. Furthermore, the Sega Sports challenge provides the game with a competitive element that adds replay value to the title. It's not exactly an online multiplayer feature, but it's one of the many options that make NFL 2K3 an excellent all-around game.
PlayStation 2Game Revolution (Sep, 2002)
After watching the dismal opening game of the regular season last night between the Niners and the Giants, I felt far from satisfied. Both offenses fell apart regularly, and even though my Niners won, the game was about as enjoyable as a root canal. So, unsatisfied with the lousy performance of real football, I ran upstairs and popped Sega Sports' new NFL 2K3 into my PS2 and gave the Giants the ass-kicking they deserved.

(PAL version)
XboxZTGameDomain (2005)
In the end with so many choices this year Sega is the obvious winner. The playing field is full with the likes of NFL Fever 2003, NFL Gameday 2003, and Madden 2003. If you are curious as to which one to buy look no further than any true football fan and you will soon realize that Sega is a dominant force in sports entertainment. With an ESPN license and the best game play around Sega has come away with my money this year. It is too bad most people will still buy Madden for namesake, this is what ruins developers pride and I for one will not let that happen!
XboxNetjak (Sep 17, 2002)
NFL 2K3 is an absolute gem of a football game that has probably been overlooked due to lack of name. It is pretty much superior to the Madden franchise in every way. From impressive on field animations and graphics to the absolutely incredible franchise mode, NFL 2K3 is a must have for any football fan, or anyone who likes to play sports and not watch them.
XboxGameplanet (May 19, 2003)
For some people this will be the first opportunity to play a title in the NFL 2k series and if you have any interest in American Football then you owe it to yourself to at least give this a shot. Its been a long time since there has been a choice of two exceptionally high quality NFL games and thankfully this cuts the mustard.
90 (Nov 16, 2003)
Overall, NFL 2K3 is par or and maybe even better than the Madden series of EA Sports. Adding the ESPN brand to the series does nothing but help this series, and others, to continue to thrive and to challenge the competition. If you want a formidable option to quench your football thirst and sick of the Madden siries, give this game a try, and you might find yourself making SEGA Sports your new brand name of choice.

XboxGameZone (Sep 02, 2002)
NFL 2K3 is a different experience (setup-wise) from other NFL games, but Sega Sports delivers a game that is remarkable in terms of graphics and gameplay. This is a terrific gaming experience.
PlayStation 2GamersMark (Aug 24, 2002)
With the addition of the ESPN license, and a few innovative features, VC has created their deepest pigskin game yet. The gameplay is still fun, albeit different, and the franchise mode is simply awesome. Oh, dont forget about national rankings and the icing on the cake, online play.
GameCubeNetjak (Oct 02, 2002)
NFL 2K3 isn't a bad game. It looks pretty nice, and the players move smoothly. The depth of playcalling is incredible, and the ability to bypass the complexity is an excellent touch. And if you haven't already noticed (I hope you have...), I LOVE the ESPN touch (I'm starting to get annoying with that, aren't I?) In-game stats are given more detail than the game's rival, and the overall presentation is a bit nicer and slicker than that other football game. But it only goes so far - Madden 2003 is still the king this season, and NFL 2K3 will have to be second best for one more year.
GameCubeGameZone (Sep 10, 2002)
If Madden 2003 and NFL 2K3 went head to head on the field, the Vegas spread would be a measly three points in favor of Madden 2003. In the end, NFL 2K3’s ability to hurry to the line (how many times have we been caught on delay of game penalties in Madden?), eight hot route options (compared to Madden’s four), and TV presentation just aren’t enough to pull out a victory against Madden 2003’s play challenge feature, defensive strafe, and mini-camp mode. Next year’s editions could tighten the score even more, and believe me, we’re all looking forward to it.
XboxSports Gaming Network (Sep 14, 2002)
I got the feeling Sega saw what attracts so many gamers to Madden. For football sim fans, we want to be able to customize just about every aspect of the AI. 2K3 attempts this to a certain extent, but it still has a ways to go. The running game is just about right, though some backs require too many players to bring down. For next year, the area that needs the most attention is the passing game specifically in the secondary awareness. Doing so would make the 2K franchise a more complete football game. As it is, NFL 2K3 is still one entertaining football game.
GameCubeGameSpy (Sep 17, 2002)
Without a doubt, NFL 2K3 is the best-looking football game on the GameCube. The player models look fantastic complete with animated faces and facial textures that look fairly close to the real thing. Players will angrily talk to themselves after making a mistake or crack a smile after they've made a big play. It goes a long way towards making the players seem alive instead of like a bunch of drones all marching to the beat of the same drum. As good as the player models are, they play second fiddle to the animation. There simply has never been a sports game with such realistic, varied animations. You can forget about watching the same tackle animation over and over, and it seems as if everything is based upon real physics instead of being scripted. Aside from some level of detail issues that make the field textures blurry, Visual Concepts has outdone itself with NFL 2K3's graphics and it will be interesting to see how it improves them for next year's game.

PlayStation 2GameCell UK (Apr 15, 2003)
It's difficult to review an NFL game without mentioning EA's Madden, and it probably still just about has the edge on playability and accessibility, but if you're looking for depth and detail then NFL2K3 might just be the game for you.
PlayStation (Sep 27, 2002)
Sega's recent partnership with ESPN brings a familiar presentation style to NFL 2K3. Games look like broadcasts and include post-game highlights, replays that display significant player actions, and intelligent commentary. Player models and motion are extraordinarily detailed, thanks to the use of techniques such as two-person motion capture of a defensive back covering a wide receiver. On the PS2, enhancements to blocking actions and physics make the running game more realistic than last year's version. Defensive AI could use some improvement, but overall this is a solid offering that is easy to learn.
XboxThe Video Game Critic (Dec 19, 2010)
In some regards it may be a small step down from NFL 2K2, but this is still a solid alternative to Madden.
PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic (Sep 11, 2002)
Overall, NFL 2K3 is still a good game, but Madden is clearly better in terms of control and overall gameplay.
