I have never loved any football game as much as NFL Blitz, and I have never loved a Blitz game as much as Blitz 20-02. No GameCube owner should be without this game. It is very enjoyable, providing you and your friends with several hours of entertainment.

While it may not be as tightly focused as NFL Blitz '99, NFL Blitz 2002 features the same basic concepts that make the series great. Blitz old-timers will balk at the game's completely different timing and needlessly expanded playbooks, but in the end, NFL Blitz 2002 is the best arcade-style football game on the home market and makes an excellent alternative for those who haven't been wowed by the Xbox's other football offerings.

PlayStation 2GameSpy (Oct 19, 2001)
To sum up, Blitz has everything an arcade football nut would want. The gameplay is great, the graphics are incredible, the cheerleaders are cute, and it's an all around blast. Granted, Blitz is to Madden what Crazy Taxi is to Gran Turismo, but what Blitz lacks in depth it makes up in sheer fun.

A nice upgrade to an arcade classic and a great alternative to all the deeper, more realistic, NFL simulations crowding the Xbox.

Overall, Midway should be proud of what has been accomplished with NFL Blitz 20-02. It badly needed some revamping, and that's exactly what has been successfully done here, without losing the magic that made Blitz what it was. If you liked NFL Blitz in the past, but had been turned off by the series as of late, come on back - NFL Blitz 20-02 gets the job done with flair. Without a doubt, it's the best extreme football game available today, and worthy of purchase. NFL Blitz 2002 = great football fun.

XboxGame Chronicles (Mar 30, 2002)
NFL Blitz 20-02 is a solid upgrade of the original game featuring amazing next-gen graphics and tight, intuitive controls. If you loved the original or just like extreme versions of real sports then this is a must-have title. It’s a bit shallow on the single player modes, but as long as you have some friends you can challenge there is no better arcade football game currently available for your Xbox.

PlayStation 2PSX Extreme (Mar 15, 2002)
Surprisingly enough, NFL Blitz 2002 came out to be a polished and very enjoyable product with superb extras and enhancements that separates the game from its far more simplistic predecessors, as the game features a pretty good play book. Mark Turmell and the guys have done a nice job at releasing the very first arcade football title on the PS2. NFL Blitz 2002 looks, plays, and controls well. Not to mention the replay value can be dangerously high with 3 friends and the tournament mode.

PlayStation 2Gaming Target (May 20, 2002)
The attempt to capture the real life crunching pain of an actual football game is pretty accurate. While remaining aggressive in the game, some samples will make you laugh, like those of taunting players after a tackle or the one’s on the ground who scream from the burst of pain. The hits and slams are clear as a bell, and seem like the hurt like hell. The commentary is a definite change from any other football title out there, and as long as the two jeering announcers don’t annoy you, things should work out fine when listening to the less than intelligent words of wisdom.

GameCube64 Power / big.N / N Games (Apr, 2002)

XboxIGN (Mar 20, 2002)
Overall, NFL Blitz 20-02 is a must-own for any fan of the original series. This is a huge upgrade in the graphics department, and the gameplay is solid as ever. It doesn't do much more than the original game, and is a little short on single player fun. For pure, arcade-style football action, there's nowhere else to be.

But if you're like me, you've been jonesing to get your Blitz going on the PS2 for a couple of years now... and it's payday. For pure, arcade-style football action, there's nowhere else to be.

PlayStation 2GameZone (Mar 04, 2002)
NFL Blitz 20-02 is a great addition to Midway's in-your-face style arcade sports games and it does offer very entertaining game play, but all in all it's a quite basic game. There's really not much to it, especially in the game mode department, and the enjoyment of playing single-player wears off quickly because of this. They obviously focused on making the actual game play the best part of the game and therefore they've been successful. Blitz is still what it's always been: a face-paced, hard-hitting and most importantly, fun, football game for those who like to get rowdy.

PlayStation 2GamePro (US) (Mar 11, 2002)
Graphically, the stadiums look sharp and the player faces have been motion-captured (though you rarely see them unless you zoom in on an instant replay). The two-man commentary seems really chatty, but it has always been that way with Blitz. Controller response is tight, too. Otherwise, NFL Blitz 20-02 is a comfortably familiar arcade-style pounding with a bit more depth on the PS2. If you haven’t seen the series in a while, check this one out.

GameCubeElectric Playground (Apr 02, 2002)
As a penny-pinching consumer, you know you shouldn't buy this. Still, it's damnably fun and addictive. Besides, only a complete jackass would miss the opportunity to see Blitz as it was truly meant to be. Weighed from a standalone viewpoint, yes, 20-02 is a standout game. Viewed alongside peers like NHL Hitz--plus its own venerable predecessors--a lot is left to be desired. We're all for bone crunching tackles and career-ending cheap shots, but hey... is a little innovation so much to ask for?

GameCubeAll Game Guide (2002)
Midway surprised a lot of people with NHL Hitz 20-02, and the decision to inject their fast-action brand of sports titles into other venues is probably a wise one. As long as they are serious about making games with enough extras to make them worth purchasing, there will be few complaints. If they continue to slap a year on the packaging along with a few half-hearted features, as they did with this title, their audience is going to ignore them. Perhaps the real changes were in store for NFL Blitz 20-03, which debuted a mere six months after the release of this title.

XboxAll Game Guide (2002)
There's nothing technically wrong with NFL Blitz 20-02, so it will offer some fun if you've never experienced the series before.

The fact that NFL Fever's models are as unrealistic as these should make Fever's fans shudder. However, Fever believers can fall back on the comforting fact that they've at least got newer rosters. Blitz still lists Drew Bledsoe as the Patriot's quarterback.
