If you don't think NFL Street is an absolute blast, you must not be a sports fan, because this game is unreal. It redefines the term "smash-mouth football", with no-holds-barred gameplay, body-crunching hits, and an unprecedented level of trash talking and hot-dogging. This game is NFL Blitz on steroids. And despite the fact that it's made by Electronic Arts, this is NOTHING like Madden.

NFL Street is the latest game to be released under the EA Sports Big brand. The Big brand is the extreme division of EA Sports, and it includes titles like the SSX series and the NBA Street series. If you ever played any of the games from these series, you know what to expect from NFL Street, a fun and over-the-top type of game. NFL Street throws the NFL rules out the window, and juices up the hits we see on Sundays. It doesn’t stop there, you will also see plenty of showboating and celebrations that are frowned upon in the NFL, and you will witness some very spectacular plays. NFL Street redefines the extreme football genre.

Sports games are a key component to most consoles. If there are enough high quality sports games on your console then you know you will succeed in some level. EA has one of the biggest market shares of sports games on all consoles currently available. The majority of their sports games fall under the “simulation/real life” sports games. Since the release of this generation of consoles they have been releasing more “arcade and over the top” sports games, under the brand “EA Big” which have really fleshed out all of the genres. Their latest game under the EA Big title is NFL Street, and it is one of the best football games I have played in a long time. Read on to find out more!

4th and goal from the trash can, McNabb's your man behind center, Vick's out wide, and The Fridge isn't just in the backfield, he is the backfield. As you scroll through your playbook, you can run a double reverse to Must-See Mike, call an option with Donovan and the big man from the Midway, or maybe even a running back pass to show off the Fridge's arm. These are the types of decisions that make NFL Street so fun, and to make things better, no matter what play you draw up in the sand, the game is so much about improvisation, laterals, flea flickers, and Gamebreakers, the play you pick in the huddle is never quite run to design, and that's a good thing, a very good thing.

With EA’s own Madden series of simulation football games consistently ranking at the top of the videogame sales charts, it seems like the arcade football sub-genre has taken a backseat to the real deal. Sure Midway’s Blitz games have kept the fire burning, but that franchise has grown more than a bit long-in-the-tooth.

Back in 2001, when the PlayStation 2 was still in its infancy and not yet hitting its stride, EA Sports Big released NBA Street, to rave reviews and gave a rebirth of sorts to the dormant arcade basketball genre once owned by NBA Jam. The eventual sequel in 2003 was just as well-received, though not quite as noticed in what’s a crowded lineup of PS2 sports games. With the success of the NBA Street franchise, it seemed to be only a matter of time before EA went ahead with a street version of what’s easily the sport they know best – football.

When it comes to razzle-dazzle and fast-paced gameplay, NFL Street makes NFL Blitz look like a friendly game of flag football. Whether you're freezing the defense in its tracks with a glitzy Signature Style deke move or ramming a hapless quarterback's head into a brick wall, you really couldn't ask for a harder hitting release.

Finally, the amount of unlockable items, while considerable, isn’t really anything special. Many of these objects are random clothing objects, like shoes or baseball jerseys. While some of them impart statistical bonuses, the majority of them are simply cosmetic. This isn’t really worth the time to play through some contest for a pair of shoes or a headband. What’s worse, the majority of unlockable teams are simply comprised of players from other squads. The designers could’ve made this entire feature better by stocking the unlockable section with only status boosting items or a much larger roster of legendary players. As it is, there are only 9 legends available, which leaves out a ton of people. What about Earl Campbell, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, John Elway, Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary, or a host of other mythological players that strapped on a pair of pads? Perhaps we’ll have to wait for NFL Street 2.

It was bound to happen. After the success of NBA Street, it was only a matter of time before EA finally made a no rules, all-fun football game. That time is now, and to let gamers know exactly what the game is and who it's from, EA appropriately titled it NFL Street. They've conquered the simulation world with Madden, so let's dive in, score a few touchdowns, and see if they still have what it takes to kick the blitz out of the competition.

I'm going to be straight up honest with you good folks for a minute. I don't play video football. Rather, I haven't played it since the (good ol') days of Tecmo Super Bowl back on the NES. Heck, I still have fond memories of 10 Yard Fight; back when the players moved in tandem around your quarterback. After those days, I fell out of love with video football; heck, video versions of traditional sports in general. This can probably all be blamed on a certain plumber and hedgehog, and then later on I fell into the vast, sticky web of fighting games that I am just now pulling myself out of.

So, it’s first and ten, and the quarterback calls a quick pass to the flat. You run up to the line and eye a cornerback who just glares at you behind his shades. The ball is snapped, and you start your route. As his pocket collapses, the quarterback launches the ball behind his back into your hands. Stutter-stepping away from your defender, you break down the sideline for a few yards before you get rocked into a chain link fence by the safety. But you’re stronger than that, so you bounce off the barrier and hurdle the back’s outstretched hands. As you spin the football on your finger and high step into the end zone, the biggest decision on your mind is whether to talk smack or break into that new dance you’ve been practicing.

The football is not bad, but cutting rules out of the standard game has kind of limited the gameplay. Playing in a back street with your friends is not so much about the rules, it's about the “vibe” & having fun & this is where NFL Street excels. Borrowing heavily from the ultra vivid hip-hop culture NFL Street is “BAD”. Fat tunes all the way, excellent vocal taunts and expressions mixed with realistic street ambience paint a decent picture of Street life. Graphically the venues are believable, the players individual and likable. Dusty allies to sandy beaches are all rendered with skill. Each player has his victory dance –like in fighting games - When it's cold you can see your players breathe and the fast-paced action is easy to understand and nice and clear. Overall if you like arcade sport and have a soft spot for street culture then you will love this game. If you are looking for the ultimate American football sim then there is more on offer from other titles.

It’s the American football game that does what little Madden NFL doesn't. You’ll like it if you’re a fan of the sport; otherwise…

All in all, NFL Street is a fun game to play, but it does have a lot of flaws that will keep you from enjoying it like you did with NBA Street. The single player mode is frustrating and time consuming, but it's a necessary evil if you want to beef up your team to play online or against friends. If you've got some buddies to play with, and you're trying to pass the time until Madden comes out, then it's probably worth a purchase, but if you're a casual fan that's likely going to be playing alone most of the time, then a rental will suffice.

Football has become too big for its own good. The NFL is (in America, at least) an unstoppable juggernaut that transcends the rule of society and law. It even has the power to reschedule Friends. So NFL Street is a welcome breath of fresh air, stripping the pads and salaries to put players back where they came from, with a ball in hand and no flags to stop a messy play.

First, there was Madden NFL. And it was good, but it had lots of rules and players, and eventually it became a religion. Then there was NFL Blitz, and it was good, but it lost its way, forgetting its arcade roots and the joy of simplicity. But now there is NFL Street, which offers true harmony between arcade and simulation football games, but with more attitude than both of them put together. Oh, and it's fun, too.

Football games are often suited for football fans. The authenticity found in a game like Madden can alienate people who are unfamiliar with the sport itself (many girlfriends of Madden fans will attest to this). So when a game like NFL Street comes along, non-football fans are granted access to the fun of football without having to bother with the authenticity.

Arcade football just isn't what it used to be. Since Madden and ESPN have defined accessible sim play, even the once-mighty Blitz has taken a backseat to realistic ball. It's come to a point where you almost need to pick up a rugby title to get that down and dirty feel. EA knows the score, though, and with the arrival of the long-awaited NFL Street, it's time for arcade football to rise again. It's not as polished or flashy as the NBA equivalent, but for a first effort NFL Street is a damn good time, with better multiplayer than anyone else.

It seems like EA can't lose when it takes the ball to the street. The NBA Street titles instigated more PS2 installations than any two franchises combined, and it was only a matter of time before the NFL got into the game. With the inauguration of NFL Street, EA has created as immensely satisfying arcade football game, with huge offense and serious points going to the unbeatable multiplayer component.

NFL Street won’t be appreciated by everyone, and I can understand it. The sport isn’t very popular in Europe, but our American visitors will be very happy with NFL Street. Gamers who think Madden is a little bit too difficult can try this light version from EA. You must realise though, that NFL Street isn’t easy and it involves a lot of strategy. The title is deceptive and gamers who are unaware think they're buying a game which is easy to pick up. If you're not scared of some training, you'll be getting yourself a game with a lot of capacity with this title.

If you've been eagerly waiting for some fast paced, hard-hitting football, NFL Street delivers what you're looking for. With Midway having recently taken NFL Blitz away from its arcade roots in favor of a more simulation-based direction, there has been a gaping hole in the arcade football genre--one that EA Sports is now more than happy to fill with the newest addition to its arcade sports lineup, NFL Street. Developed by longtime Madden NFL Football house EA Tiburon, NFL Street borrows numerous core elements from EA's other Street franchise, NBA Street, and attempts to implement them into the game of football.

With Terrell Owens and Joe Horn trying to one-up each other in the TD celebration department – and the criticism both have drawn – the NFL can now officially be called the "No-Fun League." Given the sheer amount of taunting, trash talk, and actual fun being had in NFL Street, it’s almost surprising that the league has sanctioned it. If only there were refs you could take out at the knees.

I remember playing football on muddy grey days with my friends. And EA Big’s new NFL Street is nothing like that. For one thing we didn’t talk as much senseless smack; if we talked smack it was nice and personal. After all, we were all friends. Could I have known Steve’s mom so intimately otherwise? And we definitely didn’t have much style at all. And.. we played in the mud. Oooh mud, the great equalizer. That great brown bath made every tackle mightier and graced diving receivers with a pristine filth to be worn like a fearsome muddy mask.

NFL Street is by no means a complete success, but we doubt this will put EA off, and as we all know NBA Street didn't really get into its stride until the sequel, there might be a lot more to come from this particular take on helmeted footie.
