2K Sports has hit another home run (errr ... scored a touchdown? Made a slam dunk?) with NHL 2K7. It’s a huge, solid package all wrapped up in a slick presentation with enough added features to make it a big step ahead of 2K6. The developer has always marched to the beat of its own drum, never ripping off from other hockey series. Here’s hoping they continue that trend, because they’re doing a superb job with things right now.

This has certainly stirred my interest back up in hockey, especially now that winter is upon us. I think I’ll have to dig out my old hockey game tapes and relive some of the glory days of the NHL. I may even try to find a live NHL game on the tube. I haven’t seen a hockey game in high definition yet, so perhaps now is the time. It is certainly refreshing to have game companies competing without exclusive licenses. It’s great for us and as former Wisconsin and NHL coach Bob Johnson used to say, “It’s a great day for hockey!”

So NHL 2K7 hasn't leapt forward this year, but it has smartened up its act. It looks top-bollocks, and plays as good as it always has done. The way I see it is that for 50 quid I want the best experience from my game, whatever the genre. I don't want novelty or an eight-hour campaign that I won't play again. Nor do I want just above average or something to pass the time. Like Eric Roberts, I want the best of the best. NHL 2K7 represents the best value for money out there, and it plays like a dream. Seriously, you're doing yourselves a disservice by buying all those guns-and-tits games that get hyped. That's nonsense. Get yourself a proper man's game, and grow a pair of balls while you're at it.

I can't overstate how impressed I am by NHL 2K7; it's a class act and no mistake. With atmospheric presentation that really immerses you into the experience and a huge, deep challenge in single player, plus a variety of modes, offline and on, that are an absolute joy to play with your mates, this is well worth fifty quid of anyone's money. So what are you waiting for? Get your skates on!

All in all, NHL 2K7 scores a hat trick. Great gameplay, impressive graphics and fantastic innovations have raised the standard for all sports games. The controls are fantastic with both novice and expert configurations. The graphics are top-notch, and flow smoothly. 2K7 Cinemotion adds a great gameplay camera and a movie inspired musical score. There are dozens of options you can adjust to your preferences, making the game highly customizable. With a multitude of play modes, including the best Xbox Live options available, you’ll play this game again and again. The bottom line though, NHL 2K7 is one of the best sports games currently available on the Xbox 360, and raises the bar on all hockey games (EA should take note).

With a little more work, 2K’s next offering could be the definitive hockey game. Right now, this is the best available, and is certainly worth a puck- sorry, punt. EA’s series may still be a favourite among hockey fans, but we suggest you give this a try. Who knows, you might like it even more than NHL 07, and this could become your new favourite sports sim. You might prefer EA’s game, and that’s okay too. After all, it’s nice to have a choice.

NHL 2K7 not only redeems the franchise of last year’s so-so game but it’s also one of the most enjoyable next-generation hockey games to grace the Xbox 360 thus far. We’re talking tighter controls, interesting features and gorgeous visuals so if you missed last year’s launch title you will find a lot to love about this one.

Xbox 360Digital Entertainment News (den)
In the end, for delivering sheer visual and game play thrills and a solid reworking of its core franchise for the next-gen 360 platform, there’s little doubt that NHL 2K7 is a solid, fun, playable title that leads the way into glimpsing the potential of what next-gen sports gaming should look to deliver; not just eye-candy, but better physics, better AI and a better overall experience than current-gen sports games. EA, that’s not a headache you’re feeling; it’s a lack of sleep from the way 2K Sports is once again breathing down your neck to shock you out of complacency!

Xbox 360IGN
NHL 2K7 is the total package. The gameplay is solid and smooth even if it is still very similar to older titles in the franchise. Visually, 2K Sports harnesses the power of the 360, resulting in excellent animations, frame-rate and great-looking cutscenes. The new Cinemotion presentation, while not a giant leap forward, is a great touch that gives you the choice between TV broadcast and inspirational hockey movie. The dynamic score works well enough, although it could be a bit louder. The crowd noise is a bit of a disappointment and hurts the overall atmosphere. Online, 2K Sports continues to lead the pack with online leagues and franchises and stat tracking. While NHL 07 features an excellent gameplay innovation with the skill stick, NHL 2K7 is the most complete, all-around hockey title on the 360.

To the designers of NHL 2K7 the only recommendation I have for you is to create graphics truly worthy of the Xbox 360 high definition ability. You have never had a sports simulation experience like this available on your console before. This is why I am rating this a 4.25 out of 5.

Still all things considered, I'd choose NHL 2K7 as the "champ" this year for hockey on the Xbox 360. But NHL 07 is close behind.

NHL 2K7 is the smoothest action you can find unless your watching the boys live. NHL 2K7 is improved over last years Xbox 360 version and the features like Cinemotion add a more depth to the overall presentation. The NHL 2K series isn't about to fold yet, and given this years performance, the competition will really have to step it up, to be comparable NHL 2K7.

While hockey may not be the de-facto of sports titles in the US the games are certainly worth checking out. 2K Games has done an excellent job of creating a title that is easy to pick up and play while retaining a solid fun-factor that can be enjoyed by anyone. While some may argue that it doesn’t feature the same depth of the EA title I found myself enjoying 2K’s offering much more. If you are on the fence about either title be sure to hop onto Xbox Live Marketplace and check out the demo, I guarantee you will a good time with NHL 2K7. Definitely recommended for fans of the series and here is to hoping they clean up the visuals for 2K8!

Overall, NHL 2K7 is a pretty solid title, complemented by a bevy of game modes, workman-like presentation, and some cool new features like Pressure mode and Rivalry mode. Plus, considering this is a modest $20, you can’t really beat that value. If you are a hockey fan who wants to save up some money for a real seat or fancy satellite package, this game should the perfect compliment for those wishes to come true.

Overall, the graphics and sound feel straight out of last year's game and 2K Sports clearly focused on the next-gen product over the current-gen. Online, 2K Sports continues to lead the pack with online leagues and seasons. NHL 2K7 on higher difficulties is a solid simulation and, with all the modes, teams and options, is the most complete hockey title on the PS2.

Having spent time with both games I’ll say that it really is going to depend on where you do the majority of your gaming. If you tend to play on your own or have buddies over the house for a little NHL action then the changes EA has made this year make NHL ’07 a great new option with some revolutionary changes. If you’re an Xbox Live type of player who wants to spend a lot of time online and in franchise mode, stick with NHL 2K7. You know it, you love it, it’s the best version yet.

Xbox 360GameSpot
For what it's worth, as much as you could argue that 2K7 hasn't leaped forward from a gameplay standpoint since last year's release, there are a number of smaller, clever changes that add to what is already an incredibly deep package, and the new cinemotion feature gives a cool, new alternative to how sports games have played out over the last several years. When you consider how unimpressive the series' debut was on the 360 last year, 2K7 is leaps and bounds above what that game offered. It's familiar hockey, but it's great hockey, and whether you're a longtime fan or new to the series, it's absolutely worth checking out.

NHL 2K7 is by no means a giant leap forward for the franchise. As stated earlier, 2K8 is the season to watch out for. As it stands, while the Pressure Control and drop pass are nice additions to the control scheme, they aren't as innovative as last season's Pro Control Passing or even Crease Control. The new skating engine adds more precision in terms of player movement on the ice, but it doesn't negate the overwhelming use of one-timers to score goals. The new Cinemotion presentation is the real deal, offering an exciting new way to play the game of hockey. When all is said and done, there's little question NHL 2K7 remains the most complete virtual hockey experience on the market. For current generation users, it's an easy recommendation at only $20. It's a little more expensive for Xbox 360 gamers at $60. Still, hockey fans won't be disappointed.

Xbox 360Xbox World Australia (XWA)
Overall, NHL 2K7 has definitely brought the series into the next-generation. The graphics and presentation have had a thorough overhaul ultimately resulting in Cinemotion and the fantastic new camera system. However, the gameplay hasn't had an equivalent change which is understandable – they nailed the gameplay last year and as the saying goes, if it ‘aint broke, don't fix it. You've still got the thoroughly engaging gameplay coupled with the great presentation resulting in a slick and fluid NHL game that's good fun all round.

Xbox 360GamingExcellence
In the end, I've got very mixed feelings about NHL 2K7. On one hand, it's a big leap from NHL 2K6, the Cinemotion greatly adds to the experience, and it's a heck of a lot of fun to play. On the other hand, it's got a few noticeable gameplay flaws, and a lot of competition this year. On its own, NHL 2K7 is a very enjoyable hockey game despite its shortcomings, and should be on the shelf of any serious hockey fan.

All told, the only reason to pick this up if you already have the 360 version, or are trying to choose between the two, is the preference of friends with PS3s. If you're getting your first or only next-gen console, this is a great game to pick up and try, even if you've abandoned hockey. Hopefully next year will bring some real options for less arcadey play to satisfy a wider audience, but NHL 2K7 is still a reliably fun launch title for the PS3.

In the end, NHL 2k7 is a great addition to the franchise, especially if you're willing to take the time to fiddle with the settings. 2k Sports has laid a solid foundation for future next-gen hockey titles and we can't wait to see what they come up with next year.

Xbox 360G4 TV: X-Play
Though casual fans might initially find the level of control to be more complicated than the average tax code, the best part of NHL 2K7 and the entire NHL 2K series is its depth, from the robust franchise mode to its online play over Xbox Live, fun mini-games, and diverse assortment of bonus content. The biggest knock, of course, is that most have already seen what the game has to offer in previous versions. While it's not wrong to say NHL 2K7's presentation and controls would benefit from further enhancements, those who live and breathe hockey will be more than satisfied with developer Kush Games' second effort on Xbox 360.
80
Xbox 360GameSpy
Puckheads looking for the hockey game to own this fall should definitely check out both 2K7 and EA's NHL 2007. Each title brings its own game to the ice, and ultimately, different players will side with the title that matches their own preferences.

XboxGameSpot
As disappointing as it is that the Xbox version of NHL 2K7 lacks any serious updates, it's hard to argue with the notion of focusing on the newer consoles, since the life span of the older ones is dwindling so quickly. For what it's worth, 2K7 on the Xbox costs only $19.99 at retail, versus the $59.99 price of the 360 version. You'll get significantly more out of the 360 version, but if you'd rather not spend the money, and you don't mind getting a largely recycled game (a great recycled game, mind you) with new rosters and a couple of neat tweaks, NHL 2K7 for the Xbox is worth a look.

I have a feeling that NHL 2K7 is the filler game that will hopefully get 2K through to 2K8, when they can redefine hockey gaming forever. Keep your fingers crossed. While the animations and physics are vastly improved, there’s too little else to like with this series. A general art direction overhaul seems to be in order, plus, a bit of A.I. tweaking could cut down on all-world goaltending occurring on any difficulty level. I would probably check out the demo of NHL 2K7 to see if you like the new skating feel. If the skating absolutely blows you away, then pick this one up. If not, then save your money for NHL 2K8 and hope for the best.

NHL 2K7 is a very enjoyable hockey game. It has shown many signs of improvement vs last year’s game. There are still things to work on for next year, including better control and the play by play, but this game will definitely keep me busy until next year’s game.
75
Xbox 360PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
Solid game of ice hockey that shines brightly in some regards - but it isn't the Holy Grail of universal accessibility we would have liked. It's worth giving this pucker a lengthy chance.
72
Xbox 360Da Gameboyz
The gameplay is once again solid and the multiplayer is the backbone of the franchise. If you are a fan of the series you will still like this game, but some might want to take the year off and try out NHL 07 for a change. It is my hope that this great series really stands up to the challenge by EA's latest hockey effort and that next years edition of the NHL 2K shows why this game has been for so long.
70
XboxAll Game Guide
Most of the bonuses that can be unlocked are the same things that players unlocked the past few years. The Skybox -- where users can view their achievements, choose what to unlock, or play a game of air hockey -- appears unchanged as well. While NHL 2K7 is a fine game with plenty of replay value, it just doesn't bring anything new to the series.
70
Xbox 360Games Radar
While there is nothing specifically wrong with any of these new features, it feels as if piling feature on top of feature will only hold up for so long. Cinemotion includes some wonderfully intuitive changes and we like having the ability to perform sneaky drop passes - but how much before it's too much? NHL 2K7 is a solid game and the new animations help to make it feel more next-gen worthy than last year's entry. However, despite the sheer number of new features, nothing feels particularly groundbreaking.
67
XboxThe Video Game Critic
Here's a fun, arcade-style hockey title that even non-fans can enjoy. NHL 2K7 for the Xbox plays just like its Xbox 360 cousin, but the graphics are slightly degraded and the camera is pulled back further. The graphic quality isn't much of a factor, but the more distant camera makes you feel less "in the game" than its 360 cousin. Still, there's a lot of fast-paced, head-to-head fun to be had.
63
Xbox 360GameTrailers
To be fair, NHL 2K7 does a lot right – the franchise mode is one of the deepest you’ll find and it has extensive online play options. Unfortunately, the on-ice action and sub-par presentation serve to overshadow the good. Couple that with the fact that EA Sports’ NHL 07 looks and plays so much better, and it’s hard to justify lacing up the skates in NHL 2K7.
61
Xbox 360FiringSquad
The king is dead, long live the new… foreign king? Yes, EA has taken over the hockey sports crown, and 2K rested on their laurels far too long. Despite having the worst front-end GUI in the world, I’d rather play the new, more accurate, and fresher NHL 07. That is, unless, I plan to sim. Even if it’s just a month, even a week – and then the aggravation involved with dealing with the NHL 07 interface makes me yearn for NHL 2K7.
58
Xbox 360The Video Game Critic
All in all, NHL 2K7 will definitely appeal to a mainstream audience, but real hockey fans looking for some substance should investigate EA's NHL 07 first.
58
Xbox 3601UP
Part of my frustration with 2K7 is that it used to be inarguably solid, but now it feels dated. If it weren't for the incredibly deep franchise mode, it wouldn't even be in the same league as EA's revamped effort. As it stands, 2K7's in the midst of a rebuilding year.
58
Xbox 360Game Revolution
Strangely enough, I had the most fun playing NHL 2K7’s open matches. Pond Hockey and the Franchise Mode practice games let me in for quick and dirty play without getting bogged down in details, or the game’s messy control scheme. NHL 2K7 plays a solid game of hockey thanks to a frozen lake’s worth of content, but rough controls, unforgiving AI and no tutorial content are the equivalent of thin ice for beginners. If you don’t commonly say “Aboot” or “Eh”, heed our warning: This game is for experts only.
58
Xbox 360Gaming Age
So yeah, I can't make it any clearer than that - If you're interested in a new way to control the puck (which, for me, worked surprisingly well) and don't mind the exclusion of depth, in terms of the various play modes, than NHL 07 is probably for you. On the other hand, if you want your game to include everything but the kitchen sink and enjoy the intensity of a good hockey match (enhanced rather well by Cinemotion) than you're more than likely going to prefer 2K7. Does that make one a clear winner? No, but it should give you a good indication of which you'll enjoy more.
