If it was not for the slowdown problems, NHL Breakaway 98 would be great. I know that this is only one thing, but it should have been addressed. I would have rather had no announcement that there was 1 minute left, than to have the slowdown. The gameplay kicks ass and you will keep coming back for more. The glow puck is also a great idea. With other games that aren't as strong as NHL Breakaway 98, I usually find myself saying that I wish I could take bits and pieces from other games to create the perfect game. Aside from the slowdown, NHL Breakaway 98 seems to have done that.
NHL Breakaway is another Acclaim gem, even though it is somewhat on the easy side. But, I think a lot of people will enjoy it and have a great time with it. Especially in the multiplayer area, which is easily one of the greatest multiplayer games ever made. Acclaim has done an exceptional job with this title in packing it full of options and modes and missing only a few, minor things such as a decent instant replay as well as a challenging season mode. This game is great fun and is for all hockey fans, and even for non-hockey fans and beats Midway's Wayne Gretzky 98 in every area. Buy it.
Breakaway combines a boatload of features, great graphics, and stellar gameplay all in one package. Finally, it looks like you can put your Genesis away - a true 32-bit hockey game has finally arrived.
In the end, Breakaway 98 is one of those rare games that come along every once in a while; it seems to have everything going for it: great graphics, superb sound, unmatched control - a game that's just plain good in all of the categories. Breakaway 98 is better than real hockey.

This game provides a very solid simulation experience and several options that are superior to the options in the Gretzky games. The action of the ice, although more realistic in some ways, may not have quite the electricity of Gretzky, with its emphasis on fast, arcade action and high scoring.
NHL Breakaway '98 may not break or surpass any new boundaries, but it's definitely a good game and shouldn't be overlooked.
If you want Theme Park set to a hockey beat, then Breakaway is for you. If you want quality action and gameplay, wait for a Stanley Cup contender like FaceOff '98 or NHL '98.
NHL Breakaway '98 is a silly game encapsulated in a great hockey management simulation. Unfortunately, like the phoenix, the silly game breaks free and takes away any fun the simulation may have brought you.
Nintendo 64The Video Game Critic
The single-player experience is pretty boring thanks to a CPU who passes up most of his good shot opportunities. Penalties are called completely at random. The crowd boos constantly, and you can't really blame them. This is just bad hockey.
