NHL Championship 2000 is a good hockey game, and wonderful competition for NHL 2000 by EA. If you are looking for arcade hockey, try NHL 2000. If you want simulation hockey, try out NHL Championship 2000. Since this is the first of this series, we can expect NHL Championship 2001 to be a very, very good game. This game delivers a good hockey fix, with few lost teeth.

NHL Championship just falls short of NHL 2000 in one way - excitement. Fox has done well to bring all of the components together in a fun way, and the feeling of being in the arena is superb. However, NHL 2000 still has the edge in sheer adrenaline pumpability. Maybe it's due to higher frame rates or faster skating, but there is a noticeable difference when playing the two side-by-side. Also, little touches such as players arguing penalty calls give NHL 2000 more of a human feel, and adds far more than corporate logos and flashy TV effects ever will to the feeling of being there.

The average sports fan identifies hockey with blazing speed, smoking slapshots, and wild brawls. Because the more popular computer hockey games are designed with the average sports fan in mind rather than the serious hockey enthusiast, they come off as caricatures of the sport rather than realistic simulations. For the past several years, EA Sports has dominated the PC hockey world with its NHL series by producing games with great graphics and sound that are lots of fun to play. But some hard-core hockey fans have argued that EA Sports' hockey is more of an arcade game than an accurate simulation of the sport. With NHL Championship 2000, Fox Sports has created a fun game that gives serious hockey fans more of the realism they demand.

Om man ska försöka sig på en sammanfattning, måste slutsatsen ändå bli att EA Sports NHL 2000 är ett bättre spel på många områden. Jag hoppas ändå att Fox och Radical Entertainment fortsätter och förfinar sitt spel, för det har helt klart förutsättningar att bli riktigt bra.

The people over at Fox interactive know hockey, and it shows in how well NHL Championship 2000 looks, plays, and feels. The physics are so realistic that a lot of video-game hockey fans may actually be turned off by it.

Steuerungsideen und NHL-Lizenz in Ehren, aber der Funke will nicht voll überspringen. Angesichts des hakeligen Spielgefühls könnte man meinen, daß eine Pattex-Schicht auf die Eisfläche geschmiert wurde. Weitläufiges Kombinationsspiel ist weniger angesagt als Eishockey- Maloche mit Dauerzweikämpfen. Wenn doch mal der Puck im Netz zappelt, dann entweder durch One-Timer-Glück oder »Wie ging der denn rein?«-Abgepralle. Kantige Spieler und unbeholfene Animationen sind nicht gerade State of the Art. Vor allem bei den Nahaufnahmen haben die Figuren einen steifen Robotercharme. NHL Championship ist kein übles Spiel, wird aber im direkten Vergleich von NHL 2000 knallhart an die Bande gecheckt.

Although Fox Sports' latest title is a far cry from the proverbial that they were shovelling only last year, the game is still dogged with problems that will make it inaccessible to all but the most enthusiastic of ice hockey fans. I don't doubt that a lot of entertainment could be gleaned from this title, but for the average gamer it will be a step too far.

Selten bekam ich bisher ein Spiel mit so vielen Mängeln zwischen die Finger: Rechner, auf denen das Programm gar nicht erst startet; Abstürze am laufenden Band; Doppelbelegungen der Gamepad-Knöpfe oder auch übergroße Bildschirmtexte. Lässt man all diese Probleme außer Acht, platziert sich NHL Championship 2000 dennoch nur im hinteren Feld der Eishockey-Simulationen. Die eher schlichte grafische Präsentation sowie eine etwas schlappe Soundkulisse lassen Activisions Werk im Vergleich zu den Konkurrenten wie ein Freundschaftsspiel aussehen.

Mit NHL Championship 2000 und NBA Basketball 2000 macht Activision erste Gehversuche im Sportspielbereich. Die Hockey-Simulation ist allerdings nicht mehr als ein Achtungserfolg: Das Spielgeschehen wird zwar realistisch - wenn auch recht langsam - dargestellt, die Steuerung der Figuren macht aber einen zähen Eindruck und ist unnötigerweise auf zehn Tasten verteilt. Erst nachdem man sich tief in die Bedienung des Spiels eingearbeitet hat, erlangt man die Kontrolle über seine Mannschaft - die sich dennoch taktisch längst nicht so geschickt verhält, wie man es seit Jahren von den Programmen des Marktführers EA Sports gewohnt ist.

If Fox Sports can institute that option and make a better attempt to capture the feel of a real hockey game, they could have a rival to EA's NHL series. Until then, this title is worthwhile only if you find it in a bargain bin.
