The lack of online play on this console is disappointing, but this is still a terrific title. Midway has crafted a game that is a delight to play and to watch. Option rich, graphically wonderful and with a great audio track, this is a title video hockey fans should own.

When Midway Sports first introduced its Hitz series of sports games, it not only introduced some really excellent sports titles but an alternative to the more serious titles already available. With its NHL Hitz games, we saw some pretty interesting things happening to our favorite sport and this is what made it so damn fun to play. Now, with NHL Hitz Pro, the series has gone pro and even features five-on-five hard-slamming action. Ah, you can already feel the heat this one is generating.

I don't know if there is a group of people out there who won't simply fall in love with this game. Anything about the game you don't like can simply be changed. Midway wasted nothing and pulled out all the stops to create the ultimate game of hockey. The only things missing are a full franchise mode and some type of season for that really cool game of roller hockey. This is a must own game and one that will age extremely well.

Overall, the game is just a blast to play. People that have never played a hockey game before, or ones that are generally intimidated by a big learning curve should be able to pick up the game and have a good time. It's not the prettiest game, that's for sure, but it's lights out when it comes to game play. If you were hesitant because of the game's touted "realism" fear not, cause it's as wild and crazy as ever.

Midway had one goal in mind when the decided to go “Pro” – make a hockey game that was fun to play while still observing the rules of the sport, all the while keeping it fun to play without bogging the gamer down in endless stats and detailed gameplay. NHL Hitz Pro is just that; a fun action-packed experience with mass appeal.

Had Midway gone total simulation I think this game would have faltered significantly. NHL Hitz Pro gives me good feelings about the upcoming NFL Blitz Pro from Midway. I now have the hope that they will not go total simulation in that game either. I still say NHL Hitz Pro is the easiest hockey game for your normal gameplayer to pick up and have fun with, even those who know nothing about hockey. You also have control over a myriad of sliders if you want to make the game slower or faster for instance. NHL Hitz Pro brings a great game to the table if you're looking for a straight arcade-like experience. If you're looking for simulation only you may want to look elsewhere on the dial. NHL Hitz Pro is just one of those great party games...always has been, hopefully always will be.

I haven’t had this much fun with a hockey game since the 16 bit era. For gamers that are looking for silky-smooth gameplay and controls, NHL Hitz Pro delivers. Hockey sim fans shouldn’t bypass Hitz Pro on account of its past history, especially due to the plethora of sliders that allow tweaking of practically every aspect. The franchise and season modes aren’t as deep as the competition, but still provide enough fun to keep the attention span of most gamers for another year. The lack of online play for the Xbox is a definite downer, but will be included next year. The Hitz series now competes head-to-head with the competition instead of being a distant third as in past years. While the new “Pro” branding might not convert diehard hockey sim gamers, any hockey fan should give NHL Hitz Pro a good, hard look.

NHL Hitz Pro is all games to all people. It will not disappoint hockey fans, and it shouldn't disappoint those who love Midway Sports. What it boils down to is an action-packed experience that rekindles memories of old Genesis NHL sessions. Addictively fun as a multiplayer game, and tricked-out with enough new modes and Franchise options to make the single player experience enjoyable, Hitz Pro delivers on its promise.

A couple of months back, Midway Sports announced its intention to "go pro" with its new titles. NHL Hitz Pro is the first title to sport (forgive the pun) the new moniker, and it's got a different sensibility about it as well. The idea behind the Pro line is to give gamers more of what they're looking for in a sports title while retaining what it is that Midway has always done well. That translates into a game that features five-on-five hockey and all of the rules of the NHL, with the on-fire antics, speedy gameplay, and slick action everyone's come to expect from NHL Hitz.

Hitz has always had a place in my heart, due to its over-the-top game play, which brought both newbie gamers (my dad) and experienced gamers (me) together. While Hitz Pro allows you to jump in and play immediately after purchase, it does feel much more sim-like than previous installments in the series.

Hitz Pro does have good sound effects however. The crowd does get involved in the game, making a lot of noise, the sound of skates on ice, and pucks being hit are all refreshing in a hockey game. Players being slammed against walls and shattering glass are also pleasant sounds in a hockey title. A final noticeable change is the music, which is not as heavy metal as it was in previous versions. Anyway, be sure to rent a copy of Hitz Pro today and if you enjoy it, go ahead and pick it up at your local retailer.

NHL Hitz Pro is great, but what if you already have the first two NHL Hitz games? Having purchased those titles only shows how much you love the series, and no fan should go without this title. Don't get rid of the original – it's still a classic that you'll want to keep in your collection. But once you play NHL Hitz Pro you'll never want to go back. The realism pitfall that sank many "Titanic" games only helps to keep this one afloat. It's a little faster, a lot more exciting, and more addictive than ever before. The updated franchise mode is great fun, and who could deny the entertainment found within the deep season mode. Then, when you've got all of the secrets unlocked, you can get together with three friends and have hours of multiplayer fun.

Overall, NHL Hitz Pro has the gameplay to keep you and your buddies glued to the screen for months. It's easy to pick up and play, but there's enough depth and customization here to make this the only alternative to the more simulation-based hockey games available. For pure hockey fun, you won't beat NHL Hitz Pro this season.

Aesthetics aside, NHL Hitz Pro still provides an enjoyable hockey experience that’s easy to pick up and play, graphically sound and aurally interesting just like before. However, this experiment with more realism injected into the series lacks a certain amount of zip that diehard fans have come to know and love. Hopefully next year’s version will augment the arcade action within the 5-player format as well as more features reminiscent of previous titles, but as the start to a new franchise, NHL Hitz Pro is definitely skating in the right direction.

Here’s an interesting question to pose to all of you sports fans today: Take a popular sport beloved by millions of people. Now, make it more accessible for newcomers while retaining the strategy necessary for hardcore fans. While some designers would probably go the EA route, with full sim-recreations of the game, Midway Sports went in the opposite direction, with arcade mechanics and over the top action for their sports titles. Innovative and lots of fun to play, Midway aficionados eagerly await the hard-hitting play from year to year. Well, prepare to be surprised, because Midway’s season, led off by NHL Hitz Pro, is more grounded in fundamentals than the absurd.

Midway's NHL Hitz series is only a couple of years old now, and already the company has endeavored to give it a massive overhaul. Earlier this year, Midway announced that it would be completely revamping both its arcadelike Hitz and Blitz series with more simulation-styled gameplay. At the same time, Midway wants to maintain the fast-and-loose style and pace characteristic of both series. NHL Hitz Pro is the first result of this experiment, and, thankfully, Midway has not "done its hockey series wrong." The game is an excellent blend of the two styles of play and has enough options, on either side, to appeal to hockey fans of any sensibility. Above all else, the game is just a lot of fun.

NHL Hitz Pro offers some new simulation options, but these really aren't what the game is all about. The gameplay of the arcadelike modes is still really great, and the extensive roster of modes for play make this a great package for any arcade hockey fan or simulation hockey fan looking for something a bit different. If you enjoyed any of the previous installments of NHL Hitz, NHL Hitz Pro is right up your alley.

Overall, this game is great competition for ESPN and EA. With the new Pro style of games, Midway Sports can now keep up with the others and hopefully broaden their fan base. It’s just that for this writer, I don’t see why something that wasn’t really broke got fixed….and totally changed around.

The time you spend bringing up minor league teams to NHL status, tweaking the play-list and earning all sorts of cool gear will also unlock a lot of other hidden treats as well. Getting bored with the game? Throw on some cheats to mess things up and make it a little more interesting. Turn on the Bulldozer Puck feature and mow down anyone in your way with a nasty slapper or a twisted wrister. All in all NHL Hitz Pro delivers what it advertises in a clean and fun package. I’d highly recommend it for dorm rooms and bachelor pads.

As the season’s only other GameCube hockey title, NHL Hitz offers a lighter take than NHL 2004. By adding the “Pro” at the end of the name, Midway’s trying to tell you that its famously over-the-top series is taking the sport much more seriously but not too seriously. When you play NHL Hitz Pro, that actually makes sense. The feel of parody is gone; rather than being a wild action game based on hockey, this year’s edition is a hockey game with some wild action.

The game modes have been revamped as well, particularly the Franchise. In Hitz Pro, you create a fictional team and take to the ice in an effort to make it into the NHL. As you progress you’ll build up your players overall rating (and in turn, your overall team rating) and acquire items in the form of Hero Equipment by completing in-game tasks, such as scoring 2 goals with a certain player in one game. You might win Lemieux’s Gloves or Lidstrom’s Stick, which you then assign to a player to boost stats.

Midway has enjoyed a long, secure reign as the king of action sports. From NBA Jam to NFL Blitz to MLB Slugfest, the company has managed to carve out a successful niche for itself by shoving subtlety into the backseat with the kids while barrelling down the fast lane of huge hits and frantic action. The only real competition has been from EA Big, who have in recent years dominated just about every sports genre they touch.

We were great fans of the past Hitz platform. Overall this is a good game with decent graphics and decent gameplay, but we miss the old arcade feel of the game. The action is noticeably slowed down and the added players just clog up the rink. We want a turbo button that actually makes the players go faster, and what the hell happened to team fire? Overall this is a very good offering from Midway, they just messed up a good game. Hopefully next year, we will see more of the old and not more of EA.

What the hell was Midway thinking? Did we really want or need another simulation series or a full recreation of the sport. We have EA, SEGA, Microsoft, and 989 studios to do recreations of the sport. WE WANT PEOPLE FLYING THROUGH GLASS, WE WANT FAST ACTION GAMEPLAY AND PUCKS GOING THROUGH PEOPLES HEADS! Well, maybe we went a little to far with that last request, but hey look at Grand Theft Auto.

The new simulation aspects are a good attempt to make this year's game appeal to every type of hockey fan, but the game still feels like it's caught in transition. From a point of comparison, Hitz still just doesn't stand up to the hardcore offerings of EA and Sega/ESPN, but the ability to scale from icehouse brawling to more serious competition will justifiably be well met by many fans. Hitz was doing pretty well last year, and to continue to be successful, the series needs to decide what it wants to be. Until that happens, there's ample action here to placate those who want a loose, fast game of arcade ice.
