Nightmare Creatures is hacking and slashing at it's best - kind of a Streets of Bloody Rage for the '90s. With it's speedy gameplay and fast moving enemy interaction, not to mention the intense, creepy nature of the backgrounds, Nightmare Creatures is sure to haunt your dreams for months to come.

In a cross between Resident Evil and Fighting Force, Nightmare Creatures thrusts players into the incredibly dark and gory world of 19th century London. Taking the role of either Ignatius the monk or the sword-wielding Nadia, the gamer faces a fight to the finish against an array of monsters, which appear in a variety of 3D environments filled to the brim with monsters. Nightmare Creatures does an excellent job of combining tension and evil with the fighting technique of weapon based fighters such as Soul Blade.

This is basically the same game as the PSX version. If you already own it, there is really no reason to spend the money on this game. I did give it a higher score than the PSX version because I think that there is nothing else like this game on the N64 so it gets some N64 originality points. If you only have an N64 and you are looking for a game that does not star a mascot, sports player or plumber, I suggest checking the game out. It does have some problems but if you can look past them, you should enjoy this game.

PlayStationGame Revolution
Nightmare Creatures is a fun game that is comically gory. Despite a few frustrating levels and a couple of blocky characters, it's a jolly diversion and a chilling ride. Grab your weapon and steel your nerve, there are monsters out there.

WindowsPC Gameplay (Benelux)

Nightmare Creatures fuses the combat elements of top fighting games with the fully explorable environment of adventure games. Unleash unstoppable combos, use incredible weapons and special moves, and find hidden objects.

This could have been a game of the year candidate. It is definitely one of the most original games you will play and it is worth a rental just to see the cool monsters. I was disappointed in the difficulty and camera angle problems because it took away from the fun a bit. It was frustrating that the monsters could block with their backs but you couldn't. All in all, if you are up for a serious challenge and love horror stuff, you will really enjoy this game. If horror is not your thing and tough games just make you mad, you still need to rent it just to see the zombie get chopped in half. That never gets old.

Nightmare Creatures offers some truly horrifying monsters and lush scenery, but fails to effectively sustain or capitalize on the macabre mood the graphics and the soundtrack created when the game begins. Gameplay focuses too much on combat, ignoring the potential of other avenues of adventures in its evocative Victorian London setting. The most disappointing aspect of the game is its rather awkward controls, which make some of the more basic actions, such a jumping or turning around, a complete nightmare. It also lacks multiplayer support. However, if you are looking for pure arcade-style hack and slash fun, such as spin-kicking a zombie into two pieces, this might be a game you want to check out.

Ultimately, the positives far outweigh the negatives in Nightmare Creatures. It's spooky, challenging, and a hell of a lot of fun.

There's plenty of fun to be had as you battle weird creatures and large bosses. Unfortunately, the frantic action is marred by an overly-complex control scheme which is condusive to mindless button pushing. Nightmare Creatures is no classic, but it's a certainly good Halloween game.

Nightmare Creatures (64) is well-executed conversion of the PlayStation original. The game is extremely moody and gory if not downright eerie. The theme is a refreshing change from the usual 64-bit selection and it's a third-person action-fighter, which in itself is a novelty for the console. Had this game arrived last year and had we not already played it for PlayStation, I would have no doubt enjoyed it quite a bit more. As it stands, it's still a solid N64 title that, unfortunately, has its share of camera and control frustrations. A good entry from Activision. Now, how about some N64 exclusives?

Nightmare Creatures is a game with some extremely good points and some equally bad ones. The levels, monsters, and player characters look fantastic. Under 3D acceleration, the special effects are breathtaking. Combat is enhanced by the addition of fighting moves rather than just choosing a weapon and blasting away. The lack of a decent save game feature makes the game frustrating, and it's totally confusing as to why the adrenaline level annoyance was even put into the game in the first place. As a final blow, the game has no multiplayer support, something that is almost a given in this type of game nowadays. Bottom Line: Fantastic creature, character, and environment graphics. Under 3D acceleration, the smoke, fog, and flame effects are phenomenal. Fighting moves incorporated into a 3D action game is an exceptionally welcome addition and sets the game apart from most games of it's type. Level design is fairly linear.

WindowsPC Player (Denmark)

If you feel like revisiting the world of early 3D action, Nightmare Creatures is a decent choice, but you should be aware that nay game you pick might be better left as a pleasant memory.

Nintendo 64GameSpot
It's really great to see a port of a game not make all the mistakes the original did, and it makes the title much easier to recommend. Nightmare Creatures still isn't a perfect game, but it now has enough going for it to be worth the time it takes to explore its dark, spooky world.

While it does have a lot of nice elements, Nightmare Creatures ultimately ends up as a fairly disappointing experience. That's really quite a shame because the potential and premise were clearly there for it to be an incredible game; it just feels like it came out of the development oven a few months too early. Perhaps the extra time and effort that seem to be missing from this title will appear in a sequel. We'll just have to wait and see.

By the end of Nightmare Creatures, you're more struck by how dull and repetitive your journey was than by how much fun it could, at times, actually be. By the time you've fought your hundredth zombie, it's hard to stifle a yawn over this average game that's long on atmosphere but short on interesting gameplay.

Nintendo 64Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Besides the graphical changes to Nightmare Creatures, there isn't much that's changed from the Playstation version. Consequently, I realized I don't like this game. The enemies are ridiculously hard, the control could've been much better, the camera sucks 90 percent of the time and the overall feel leaves much to be desired. It just isn't fun to play. I do not recommend buying this game. Save your dough for something good, like Zelda.
