This is a game pitched to hard core fans of the series, action gamers and people who love to master combos and techniques. It's not for the button mashing crowd, button mashing will get you killed quickly. It's definitely better than the first!

Although there is not as much urgency or emotion as in the previous games in the series, Ninja Gaiden 3 is efficient in setting out the pace of battle with some memorable fights. That being said, I did find that it could become long and drawn out at times and the lack of extra weapons (the bow being the only one) and a decreased emphasis on voice acting and CGI cut-scenes dampened down some of the experience for me. At the end of the day though the trademarked blood and gore combined with new features and more backstory have made Ryu’s latest adventure one to be played and remembered.

Other woes include the overly dramatic camera, which swoops about like an overcaffeinated vulture; the myriad quick-time events which are forever reducing gameplay to a button-press or two; and the game’s half-cooked online mode, which includes dull co-operative challenges and by-the-numbers deathmatches. But the game’s greatest affront is how uninspired the whole operation is. This is a series that once reveled in absurdity and violence, arguably to a greater degree than any other franchise in gaming history. Fans of the series will no doubt recall that Ryu once famously defeated a giant, fireball-hurling worm named “GigaDeath.” But when he faces his umpteenth attack helicopter in Ninja Gaiden 3, it’s clear how far this once-imaginative franchise has fallen.
