Commando isn't for everyone. But fans of Metal Slug and other pound-you-into-the-ground, never-let-you-win shooters will appreciate what the developers have done with this game.
Whereas your typical Metal Slug game offers a challenge good enough for hardcore gamers yet still something anyone can enjoy, Commando presents players with more skill-based gameplay, which will require some serious button reflexes and finesse. That can be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. For those curious but unsure, Commando is probably worth a rental. For those who love "the pain," Commando is a definite buy. But for those who get enough challenge out of keeping their gardens tidy in Animal Crossing…well, `best to pass this one right on by.
I'm all for a game that mimics Metal Slug, but not one that just outright copies the game. The only things different about Commando: Steel Disaster are the awful story and the needlessly intense difficulty. The game controls well and has the makings of a good run and gun game, but I can't recommend it on any level, especially when Metal Slug 7 is coming out soon.
Commando: Steel Disaster isn't a long game, but it will still take quite a long time to complete--assuming you can complete it at all. The intense difficulty of this game really limits its appeal, which is a shame, because if it were just a tad more forgiving, the solid gameplay would have been a lot more enjoyable.
Basically, I went from looking forward to checking out Commando: Steel Disaster based on the screenshots I had seen, to wishing I hadn't wasted the hours on it. While I love the idea of someone creating a Metal Slug clone, I still want at least an ounce of originality from it, and I definitely don't want to feel like I'm being put through some type of cruel punishment in the form of a side-scrolling shooter. The difficulty, bland enemy and environment design, and overall poor quality really bring down what could have been a stellar DS title, but unfortunately, Commando: Steel Disaster fails to deliver on anything.
If Commando: Steel Disaster is any indication, I suppose not. Sadly, despite some good graphics, decent sounds and temptingly mindless shoot-em-up action, the average gamer will consider this a throwaway. I can only see hardcore fans of the Metal Slug games and its ilk bothering to grant Steel Disaster more than a cursory play through. And even then, probably not for long: the unspectacular and provincial nature of this Metal Slug rip-off doesn’t warrant enduring the frustration that progress in it elicits.
Sadly, few gamers will ever survive this first mission. There's just too much crossfire and not enough health packs. Who designed this game? Did anyone test it at all? Allegedly there are missions that take place in other environments, and you can save your progress between each. I have nothing against hard games, but selectable missions or an "easy" option would have been nice. Hell, there's not even a score! It really breaks my heart, because at its core, Commando had the stuff needed to be a standout DS shooter.
