The name of the game's protagonist, Shiren, contains a distinct irony when combined with the word furai ("wanderer") in the game's title: Furai no Shiren can be understood both as "Shiren the Wanderer" or as "A Wonderer's Ordeal", since the word shiren also means "ordeal".

The word furai itself is also slightly ambivalent: literally meaning "wanderer", the word is written with two Chinese signs, corresponding to the Chinese words feng (wind) and lai (coming); furai (in Japanese pronunciation) is literally "the one who came with the wind".
