This is one wily little puzzler, both charming and challenging enough that even those nauseated by the thought of Pokémon should really pick it up anyway.
Not much about the game has a real Pokémon feel, as even the art and music are quite different from the standard Pokémon fare. However, thanks to the Pokédex, one of the core aspects of Pokémon, “gotta catch ‘em all," is still present and provides some replay incentive. For puzzle game fans, Pokémon Trozei is a great addition to the genre. Pokémon Trozei should be available from DS download kiosks, so I would highly recommend that you try it out.
The rather limited and predictable number of gameplay modes in Pokémon Trozei is lamentable, but the gameplay still holds up quite well, putting its own spin on the standards of the genre. There are certainly deeper, more robust puzzle games available for the DS, but Trozei is still fun and mostly recommendable, despite some missed opportunities.
Pokemon Link is a truly pleasant surprise - a Pokemon puzzle game that's not only a competent puzzle game, but whose theme doesn't obscure that fact. Though it does have a distressingly small number of modes, the core adventure mode can be as fun in quick bursts as Zoo Keeper or Meteos, and the multiplayer features are fantastic, even if they'll sadly rarely be used. I can't in good conscience truly recommend it over Zoo Keeper's simplicity, or Meteos' beauty, but third place ain't bad.
Trozei's gameplay actually feels like an updated version of Nintendo's old game from the early '90s, Yoshi's Cookie, with a dash of Meteos thrown in. It's definitely fun and easy to get into, but the game lacks any real technique that will keep you coming back to it after the initial thrill has worn off. Given the relative simplicity of the whole thing (boss battles aside), this would probably be a good puzzle game for younger kids. For everyone else, though, it's really just something to pass the time before Tetris DS.

And while collecting rare Pokémon might be compelling for certain self-professed freaks, I found it tough to care. Perhaps those same freaks will enjoy showing off in multiplayer, but I found these sessions too short and simplistic to be enjoyable.
Save your cash. Get Pokemon Puzzle Challenge for the GBC for a lot less cash and to have a lot more fun. All Trozei did was leave me with a deep rooted feeling of disappointment and annoyance that the biggest money maker we’ll ever see for the DS, Mysterious Dungeon, doesn’t even have a US release date yet. Come on Nintendo. Get it together already!
Digital Press - Classic Video Games
Pokemon Trozei ends up as one of those games that relies on its license. It didn't need the famous monsters filling its screen, and the story mode hardly needs any of the characters to work. For its target audience, it will seem like a classic. For anyone else, they'll find a puzzle game that fails to provide the challenge needed for it to be necessary on the DS.
G4 TV: X-Play
And that’s the biggest problem with Trozei! The challenge isn’t really there, and the difficulty is all over the place based more on the random placing of the Poke-heads as they fall than whether or not you’re actually any good at what you’re supposed to be doing.
On an even more basic level, Trozei! has that same forced feeling a lot of early DS titles had. It seems like the slightly retarded love child of Meteos and Tetris DS – a clunky excuse to use the stylus more than a fun experience. Both of those games – despite their own flaws – are miles better than Pokemon Trozei!
Trozei is clearly an example of a big-money franchise being inserted into a completely un-related game formula for the purpose of selling a few thousand additional copies. But that's how the industry works and at least it doesn't really affect the play of the game. The puzzle mechanics work for what it is: a simple, easy to pick up 'n' play puzzle game, but most people will likely get bored quickly, and turn back to Meteos for its addictive puzzle action. Too much simplicity and the lack of a quality multiplayer mode keep this title from being a must have but if you are a serious fan of the genre, then you will probably enjoy Pokemon Trozei.
