In the end Red Bull BC One is obviously a cash-in title that is banking on people who are fans of the event to purchase. The most shocking thing though is that even though the game fits all the criteria of a quick job, it doesn’t feel like it when you play, and that is the most important part. The premise is simple and enjoyable, the soundtrack is fantastic and the amount of content is respectable. However, if you have no interest in break dancing or the BC One event in general this game will certainly not replace your Elite Beat Agents anytime soon.
Red Bull BC One is not particularly challenging, but it's also fun while it lasts. As far as a budget-priced DS title goes, this is a lot better than I would have expected, and if you're willing to give it a shot, it'll most likely surprise you. The license might not match up, and if the developer had created it without "Red Bull BC One" being attached, I believe that more people would have been willing to check it out, but as it stands now, it's definitely enjoyable. I haven't really played a puzzle game like Red Bull BC One that I can think of, so there's no easy comparison, but for $20, you might as well check it out. You might be surprised to find that you enjoy it.
I enjoy watching breakdancing. And I enjoy this game's core connect-the-dots mechanic. But together, they create a confusing product that doesn't have much to do with the culture or the activity of b-boy battles. It's as if Red Bull wanted to extend its brand into videogames but didn't know how to translate breakdancing into a control scheme, so this arbitrary design was tacked on. The "connect the dots" mechanic could be any generic puzzle game. Red Bull BC One sounds great and plays fine, but it feels rather irrelevant.
Overall, while the connect-the-dots mechanic in this game is decent enough, I'm not really sure if it warrants an entire game based around it. Selling the entire game around this one mechanic makes it feel a little repetitive, and neither the clothing customization nor the minigames do enough to deepen the experience. When it comes to video games about breakdancing, there isn't exactly much choice, but Red Bull BC One is just not the game to begin a trend.
Or maybe I could be wrong. Maybe you like the concept of controlling your very own breakdancer with little more than a few jabs of your stylus. Perhaps you’re a fan of the actual competition and genuinely want to play a game adaptation of it. Good for you. But for the rest of you that have absolutely no interest in this title whatsoever, don’t bother. The game is nothing more than a poorly veiled series of connect-the-dot challenges. Yes, it can be challenging getting all-time high scores, but you won’t have to exert much effort to beat what’s required of you. While the touch screen gameplay works well enough, it takes away from any potential depth that could have been offered. The bland mini games and art style make the overall presentation disjointed and cheaply made. So do yourself a favor and skip it. Instead, go watch You Got Served or some other generic dance-based flick; it’s bound to be more entertaining than this.
It can be hard to give a game that is pretty unique a low rating when you see so many games that are completely derivative and unoriginal. Red Bull BC may be really different, it may be a bit strange, but in the end it just isn't much fun and that's the most important thing in a game.
Atypique, Red Bull BC One l'est indiscutablement, mais on ne peut pas dire qu'il soit vraiment réussi. Le gameplay ne manque pas de cohérence, hélas, passées quelques parties, l'intérêt finit par tomber sous les coups de boutoir d'une répétitivité assassine. L'originalité du concept succombe également lorsqu'on le confronte au conformisme navrant de mini-jeux sans âme qu'il est impossible d'éviter. Reste un titre qui n'est pas totalement dénué de saveur lorsqu'on le pratique à petites doses et qui parviendra peut-être à satisfaire les plus curieux d'entre vous.
Red Bull BC One is the only video game best summed up as "oh snaps". It's a music game, available for DS September 16, that challenges you to break dance and beat wise cracking opponents around the world, or at least that's what publisher Ignition Entertainment would have you believe. Unfortunately, you don't break dance at all. Instead, you connect dots while a blocky character on the top screen spins on his head.
Red Bull BC One is een game die de ‘licentie’ in een licentiegame stopt. Hoewel er geprobeerd is uniek te zijn, slaat het spel de plank compleet mis. Door een gebrek aan connectie tussen het dansen en het puzzelen voelt het eerder als een derderangs puzzelspel dan als een breakdance-game. Ook de grafische stijl en de muziek vallen tegen en lijken aan te geven dat er maar weinig aandacht aan deze game is besteed door de ontwikkelaar.
Instead of a timing-based rhythm game, which has worked well in the past for DS music games like Elite Beat Agents, Red Bull BC One went down the most shallow route possible. The result is an utter time-waster, with decent music that wont make you forget that you're playing a less-amusing version of kindergarten busywork. Do yourself a favor—just watch YouTube clips of some real B-boys dancing, and while they're dancing, go ahead and draw basic geometric shapes in MS Paint if you want - either way, you'll spare yourself the pain of having to play this ridiculous game.
