Subtle, hugely addictive and massively fun, this is a rare strategy title that manages to be as accessible as it is deep.

The interface is instantly intuitive, while menu choices are always clear and easy to find. There are multiplayer modes for both local and internet play, while you can also download a "Game of the Week" from the Civilization servers. There's really not much more you could ask for. It's Civilization, in all its glory, so if you take your DS on the bus you'd best start praying for traffic jams.

Civilization Revolution DS was never meant to be a game that wowed its fans with pretty visuals. This is a game were it is all centered around the strategy and gameplay experience, and in that respect, it delivers. The replay potential is nearly infinite and you can have a blast playing it either alone (the AI is fairly challenging in the upper modes and overall very satisfactory) or in multi-player with friends. The number of maps is almost endless (although they tend to be very similar) and the number of game types is just daunting. Add on top of all that the 16 civilizations you can choose from and you’ll realize this title offers a very rewarding and long-lasting return on your investment.

Played against human or AI opponents, Civilization Revolution is a great game that will let you plumb different strategic depths each time you play. It's incredibly easy to get engrossed in the rhythm of expansion and evolution, and to find yourself happily losing hours and hours at a time. Sid Meier and Firaxis Games have done a commendable job of streamlining many of the key game mechanics, and they've cut out some of the micromanagement without gutting the strategic options. While not as pretty or fully featured as its console counterparts, the DS version packs a lot of content into a small package. The addictive turn-based strategy of the Civilization series has been well distilled here, and folks looking to dominate the world wherever they go will be pleased with this game.

While it’s by no means the best Civ game out there, Civilization Revolution for the DS is still a solid addition to the franchise. The fact that you can have fun with this game on your own terms and on your own time is great, but the title does this without sacrificing any of the classic Civilization gameplay so many people have come to know and love. Its major shortcomings don’t have such a presence on the console versions of the game, but the DS iteration is still great. If you’re hankering for some strategy fun on the go, there’s no better game to buy than Civilization Revolution.

Most of our Civilization Revolution console review holds true on DS, but the portable port is even more simplified: It lacks the helpful Civilopedia, which educates players on much of the game's minutiae. But the easy interface works pretty well on the DS touch screen, keeping the game's less-intimidating spirit alive even in miniature format. The biggest compromise is with the overall map -- you'll struggle to get a sense of the layout of the world scrolling across the DS' tiny screen, making it more challenging to strategize accordingly.

Civilization: Revolution for the DS does a remarkably good job in retaining the best features of its PC predecessors. It may be a distilled version of the game but its addictive nature remains. When I started playing it, I couldn’t put it down. I was struck with the “Just One More Turn” disease. Granted, veteran players of the game who live for micromanagement may balk at the simplified, hurried gameplay. However, it can be a great game for those new to the series, or for those who don’t wish to spend hours agonizing over and tweaking each city’s production rate.

Civilization Revolution is one of the better strategy titles for the DS and the only one that delivers the full empire-building experience that made the series such a hit on the PC. Yes, a number of elements have been streamlined and simplified, but that makes Civilization Revolution a stronger game and a better fit for the handheld platform. It falls somewhat short in a number of key aspects of its presentation, particularly with regard to the cramped visuals and the occasional lack of information, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the more enjoyable strategy titles we've played this year.

Of course, sometimes you just want a short burst of easily winnable strategy gaming and Civilization Revolution provides a slick interface with which to get just that. While it won't be winning any beauty contests with its barebones 2D graphics, the play's the thing and the combination of solid controls and lots of content in the form of the technologies, units and variegated civilizations make Civ Rev an enjoyable and entertaining romp through the traditionally staid and somber realm of nation management.

Whether you play against AI or human opponents (if you can actually get through a Wi-Fi game without a drop out) you will quickly find yourself losing hours to the strategic fun inside of the game. While hardcore Civilization fans might be a little disappointed with the watered down gameplay that they find inside Sid Meier's Civilization: Revolution, those new to the Civilization series will find themselves wiling away many hours in this title which serves as a great entry point into the world of turn-based strategy titles.

That game world, though, still amounts to the sum of humanity, and in spite of some minor niggles, there's no denying that fitting Civilization on to the DS is an astonishing achievement. Civilization Revolution remains the furiously, maddeningly addictive sandbox of delights that it's always been – which is probably the highest praise you can give it. It's just ironic that its own contribution to actual civilisation is likely to be to diminish it, by taking over every waking minute of your life, preventing you from all those things that you might otherwise be doing to further the advance of humanity. Maybe some current world leaders ought to give it a go.

Civilization Revolution is an absorbing experience and really unique on the DS, with its strategy library filled with mostly Japanese fare. It offers much of the depth of its heritage while not really intimidating new players. And it offers 2-player multiplayer, both online and local, with honest to goodness downloadable content of the Map of the Week via DS Wi-Fi. It might not have the bells and whistles of the console versions or its PC predecessors, but this smaller colony is quite at home on the DS.

Civilization Revolution makes our DS smile. The game is sweet strategic candy wrapped in replay chocolate. There are a few drawbacks, but not enough to make us cranky. Whatever your pleasure you are sure to find a massive dose of engaging gameplay, so put Civilization Revolution on your list of things to buy.

I much prefer the 360 version in terms of scope and eye candy, but if you're looking for a little game with a lot of substance, Civilization Revolution is still a good bet.
