Game Vortex
Content for download would have been an immediate improvement, in addition to a few more locations within The Sims 2: Apartment Pets to explore. Those among us that do not "get" the Sims phenomena are advised to steer clear of this game. It is pure Sims, through and through, with simple but busy gaming ideas that revolve around caring for something cute and cuddly. If that's not a great premise for a game, I don't know what is...

Game Chronicles
A combination of pet simulation, people simulation, and home decorating, The Sims 2: Apartment Pets could have been an entertaining DS title, but it unfortunately suffers from lack of depth and variety. Gamers, especially young gamers, who like Sims, enjoy playing with digital pets, and don’t mind repetition might still enjoy this one, though.

The Sims 2: Apartment Pets is fairly engaging for a few hours, but unfortunately it becomes stale very quickly as the Sim character itself requires far too little attention. A great concept, but owing to the awkward controls and the lack of care needed for the Sim, there’s just too much monotony.

The concept is quite good, but the problem is that...well, that's it. Once you've mastered the tricks, the monotony of routine sets in. Your Sim barely requires any care, so once her quick needs are addressed, it's off to the spa, spending the day caring for animals with the same problems and treatments, over and over again. Then your Sim goes upstairs, maybe plays some minigames, and goes to bed. Rinse and repeat. Unlike in the PC Sims games, your Sim can't go anywhere, make friends, or do anything, you know, fun. Sims' lives revolve around the pets, the spa, and decorating. Ultimately, that's not enough to fully disguise the dull task that caretaking becomes, and the cycle runs its course after only a few hours of gameplay. Kids may be drawn to the cute critters, but in that case, they should spend their money on a game that balances cuteness with fun more effectively.

While Will Wright’s most recent iteration for the Nintendo DS is average at best, the concept definitely stays true to The Sims gameplay code. The addition of animals and a spa to manage might be a welcome addition, or a much desired subtraction for fans of the franchise.

IGN
The Sims 2: Apartment Pets' charm wears off very quickly. There are plenty of other pet vet/pet spa games on the DS, and "The Sims" thing was what this title had going for it. Unfortunately all Sims related elements are so toned down that they may as well not be in there. The game is embarrassingly shallow for something that has "The Sims" in the title.

The Sims 2: Apartment Pets is a subpar pet game, complete with birds, guinea pigs, snakes and rabbits to interact with and enjoy. Graphically, it resembles other portable Sim games of this generation, but that is where those similarities end. If you are looking for a decent pet sim, this one may satisfy, but if you were hoping for a more Sim-focused experience, keep searching.

Worth Playing
You'd think with such a narrow focus on pets, the developers would have gotten everything perfect in The Sims 2: Apartment Pets. Dogs move like dogs, and cats move like dogs. There are only about five different cats and dogs in the entire game, and they all react to everything the same way. You can even dig up the yard with your apartment's cat if you really feel like it. At least the other pets that you can play with react differently (you can't play fetch with them), but the interaction is limited to feeding and clothing them so you almost wish you could play fetch with your pet parrot. At least he'd have something to do. Ultimately, Apartment Pets fails at just about everything it tries to do. It's not The Sims, it's not Nintendogs, and it's not fun for anyone. Maybe it's time this franchise stuck to what it was good at, and left the pet simulation to every other developer on the DS.

It’s a boring game, you get it, but the absolute crown of the whole experience is your shady “Uncle Bill.” He sends you emails with tidbits of info. Don’t worry about the rent, he says, “Me and the landlord have an arrangement." Hmm, sounds pretty fishy, Uncle Bill. Soon after that, you’ll meet a woman from an overcrowded pet shelter. She tells you Uncle Bill gave her the keys to your apartment (whoa, he did what?) and dropped a cat off at your place while you were away. WHAT THE HELL, UNCLE BILL!? YOU KNOW WHAT? TAKE YOUR ANIMALS AND THIS GAME AND SHOVE IT! WE’RE MOVING OUT!
