At a $20 price point, Space Invaders Extreme is an absolute steal for DS/PSP owners out there. There's a lot of hidden depth to the single player experience, and you'll get a decent amount of use from the multiplayer aspect as well. I highly suggest picking this one up, even if you were never a big Invaders fan to begin with. It's a great game that just about anyone can pick up and play without feeling intimidated in the least bit.
Space Invaders Extreme is simply outstanding through and through. Nothing has been overlooked, and nothing feels left out. The upgrades to the Space Invaders formula make the game just as engaging as it was 30 years ago when it was first released.
Even if you’ve never tried Space Invaders before, the title is totally worth it for the sheer bang for your buck factor. When $20 buys you one of the best-updated classic games of all time, you have no reason to complain. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go ice my aching thumbs.
Considering how expertly Taito reworked Space Invaders' gameplay, prepare to be a bit disappointed by the predictable (if inoffensive) audiovisual overhaul. Your personal enjoyment of the techno soundtrack will vary based on your patience for shrill beeps and drum rushes, but you may need to turn off the PSP version's trippy full-motion-video backgrounds in order to keep up with the action amid the chaos. But, then again, Space Invaders was never intended to be a graphical powerhouse, and with its solid, pick-up-and-play action and an easily digestible $20 price point, Extreme makes for a perfect summer gaming distraction.
Space Invaders Extreme may not meet with the approval of purists that can only appreciate a clean, black-and-white retro look. It plays like a dream from the standpoint of control and is visually attractive, with gameplay that draws from the franchise's tradition and innovates in a limited fashion. Multiplayer that involves more than just taking your friend's place in front of the arcade cabinet is refreshing, especially with online or wireless play as an option. I'm a fan of not switching genres with these new versions of classic arcade titles, more the "upgrade rather than transform" school of nouveau retro. In that vein, I'd say that Taito and Square Enix scored a direct hit with Space Invaders Extreme.

Space Invaders may now be the unfashionable side of 30 but it's still able to mix it up with the best modern gaming has to offer. This is a superlative modernisation of a classic game
While the graphics are definitely dated, it’s the audio that makes the game stand out; crafting a classic game around music was definitely a gamble, and it really paid off this time. With a nice handful of stages, gameplay modes, and online connectivity, this game is perfect for those looking for something fun and easy to pick up. So do yourself a favor and give Space Invaders Extreme a shot. Get back in touch with your inner retro gamer.
Over the past 30 years Taito’s been remaking and updating Space Invaders with wildly varied levels of successes and failures. Space Invaders Extreme is a certified hit and easily the company’s best effort in contemporizing its classic property. The game’s an absolute steal at 20 bucks on either the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable, but if you want the definitive version of this fantastic classic revisit, the Nintendo DS version is it.

A enjoyable experience all around; while perfect for 'retro' gamers, it packs enough style to reel in newcomers as well.
There is so much scope and depth here that we could ramble on all day, but we’ll let you lot figure that out for yourselves when you buy the game. Because we are going to recommend that you do. Space Invaders Extreme is easily one of the best games we’ve ever played on the DS and it has some competition. As far as DS shooters go, it is king. There is nothing at all on the DS that can touch this if you like moving a space ship around and shooting things. Not even Geometry Wars: Galaxies. We have missed things out, and our hands are suffering from spasms, but we don’t care, because we’re going to play some more Space Invaders Extreme.
Minor quibbles aside, Space Invaders Extreme is just that -- an extreme and extremely revamped yet conceptually faithful update on a classic. If you're DS-equipped and a hardcore shooter fan, or if you merely want to rekindle memories without spending another quarter every five minutes, you may have found your game.
In light of all that though, Space Invaders Extreme is still an exceptionally worthy addition to the franchise, giving you a healthy dose of nostalgia while still throwing enough good new ideas into the mix to keep the game fun in the short amount of time the experience lasts. Also, since the title is only $20, you aren't really losing much of an investment if you grow tired of it after a week or so of playing.
Space Invaders Extreme is a worthy title for anyone’s DS collection. The tried-and-true gameplay is intact but with just the right touch of refinement for anyone to pick up and enjoy. Don’t miss your chance to celebrate 30 years of gaming history by picking up Space Invaders Extreme.
Game Informer Magazine
Space Invaders Extreme serves as a fitting 30th anniversary gift to one of the oldest franchises in gaming.
While some aspects of Space Invaders have aged over time, the quality of fun certain hasn’t left. Space Invaders Extreme is the perfect companion on the go, whether or not you have friends with handheld gaming systems. It can keep you entertained on a five-minute way for the bus, and it will keep you busy when the days are slow. With the budget price tag of $20 for both the PSP and DS version, it’s not matter of when or why to get it—it’s a matter of which one you should get. If you’re going to be playing it alone all the time, the PSP version is the way to go because of its wide screen and superior sound quality. If you have friends who enjoy having a little bit of fun, it’s the DS version you want.
The graphics are crisp and sharp, not too snazzy and not too lazy. It all feels just right. It is simple, but intelligent. It feels fresh and familiar. Not too easy, not too hard. Space Invaders Extreme is a walking oxymoron. It does what a good shooter does and balances risk with reward, encouraging you to play it with flair and rack up huge combos then shoots you down for getting ideas above your station. Essentially, Space Invaders Extreme becomes an experience that I think everybody should get in on, but I'm also fully aware that it's the kind of game that can't really be appreciated unless it's played. None of my prattle can do much to change that. But, if you are sitting on the fence about this one, I urge you to take the plunge and pick it up.
It is a perfect game for all game players new and old and is great for a short blast or if you are looking for a few hours of entertainment. The only criticism of the game is that the gameplay can get slightly repetitive despite each level offering different challenges. This could put off some of the more casual gamers but we at Playdevil would highly recommend this game and as an added bonus it can be picked up relatively cheaply both online and from your local games retailer.
Nothing should stop any self-respecting gamer from picking up this title. As Namco proved with the release of the utterly sublime Pac-Man Championship Edition in 2007 on the Xbox 360`s Live Arcade, it really is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. Space Invaders Extreme is undoubtedly a triumph and is utterly essential for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre and gaming history itself.
Space Invaders Extreme is a fast-paced, stylish shooter that every hardcore DS owner needs to buy. It’s probably the best old-school action the system has to offer this side of Contra and at only twenty bucks, there’s no reason not to pick it up. Some minor quirks stop it from becoming a classic, but all in all, this is one hell of a way to celebrate an anniversary.
Seriously, though, what do you want for $20? It's more than worth the price, even if you're not familiar with the series. It's been around for thirty years for a reason, and there's no better time to discover it than with Space Invaders Extreme.
The Video Game Critic
Although the playing field is smaller, this DS version packs every bit of pizzazz found in the PSP edition. The aliens burst into colorful explosions and frenzied backgrounds overwhelm the senses. I like the layout of this DS version better, with all the gauges and indicators relegated to the top screen. Pleasant electronic beats and digitized voices also add to the experience. High scores are saved automatically. Space Invaders Extreme isn't destined to be a classic, but as a celebration of the original game, it plays the role very well.
Space Invaders Extreme is a very good example of how to update a classic game. The gameplay has been improved, and multiplayer adds a whole new dynamic to the experience. At $20, the price is right for anyone who enjoys fast-paced, arcade-style shooters with a retro twist.
