So, should you buy Operation Flashpoint: Red River? If you are looking for a co-operative shooter you can't really do much better. People didn't mark Left 4 Dead down for being lackluster in single-player and I won't with Red River, as long as you, dear reader, realize that you will not have as much fun without at least one more human player on your team. The dialogue and humvee rides get annoying fast and the restrictions to your freedom makes this both better and worse than Dragon Rising. Looks much better though. With that extra person, and the knowledge that Red River is more realism and less Call of Duty, then this is definitely a shooter that should be on your playlist. And somebody wake up Hicks.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River occupies the space between the frat-boy posturing of the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series and the anorak styling of the true military sim. If you’re looking for something slightly more authentic than the usual orgy of explosions and heroics but still want an engaging and fun gaming experience, Red River is a great introduction, achieving a balance that suits it perfectly, albeit with some pacing issues.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River is a challenging shooter that's quite alright in the basics and mostly shines thanks to its heightened reality and need for tactical thinking. You feel like you're in a real battlefield, but unfortunately get torn from that illusion too often due to lacking AI. Luckily there's a very decent co-op that makes up for a lot and which makes this game one we would definitely suggest for those who look for more than a linear shooter and can convince a couple of friends to join him/her.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River isn’t your typical shooter. You’re not going to be a gunslinger, running into a compound to take out a horde of enemies like a one-man wolf pack. It’s a slower, more tactical, squad-based shooter that relies on teamwork, strategy, and finesse. With a good upgrade system for each role and a smart co-op experience, this game offers a realistic and authentic experience of what a United States Marine might experience in combat. Semper Fi!

All told, Red River just about achieves its objective - an engaging halfway house between soldier simulation and improbable heroics, and a slick, smart co-op modern warfare experience. If only it had trimmed down the flabby downtime and the reams of prattling fratboy dialogue which dominate its campaign, and instead pursued more tactical variety, we'd perhaps be looking at something exceptional. As it is it's merely capable, with occasional flashpoints of brilliance.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River will please fans of the last game, but will still leave players of the PC originals out in the cold. It's the best military sim on consoles yet, as far as we're concerned, but in the time since Dragon Rising launched, we expected a bit more from the sequel.

If there were a word to describe Operation Flashpoint: Red River - it would be decent. The shooting mechanics are decent, the visuals are impressive enough and the campaign has decent length. Sadly though, it never bothers to strike out on its own and even try to outdo its predecessors. Those who played the last game and are craving more should check out Red River, just don't expect it to be anything special.

It's a real shame that Codemasters hasn't created a more involving set of missions with Red River, its campaign sagging at both ends of its entertaining middle, and while their attempt at streamlining the experience lessens the series' frustrations, the core game will still prove too delicate for many players. Operation Flashpoint: Red River does a good job of capturing the spirit of war, but it sadly fails to capitalise on its lofty ambitious.

While Operation Flashpoint: Red River brings customizability allows players to tailor things to how they want to play the game, it remains true to Operation Flashpoint’s authentic roots. The focus is definitely on authenticity here and the looks, sound and some of the gameplay suffers for it. That being said, Red River isn’t a bad game at all and it does include a very enjoyable online co-op mode. I’d recommend this one for the more hard core shooter players out there looking for something with a more realistic approach.

Perhaps the most disappointing thing about Operation Flashpoint: Red River is how it could have been a more recommendable title with a little bit more spit and polish. Momentum can all too often be broken in crucial moments when low walls choose to be picky as to whether they are able to be vaulted and the hit detection is blatantly off at times. Unfortunately, the genuinely entertaining humour, strong cooperative play and a surprisingly great soundtrack of familiar tracks do more to make me wonder about what could have been than push Red River into ‘must-buy’ territory.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River is a decent first-person shooter with solid shooting mechanics and great emphasis on a tactical approach to the battlefield. However, the single-player campaign is hampered by poor AI that turns challenging missions into frustrating ones, and lackluster graphics sometimes erode the game's realism. If you play the campaign in cooperative mode, though, you will find a well-balanced game that offers satisfaction and reward for overcoming its high level of challenge.

Player and class progression can change your play style for each mission, and greatly increases the replayability and variety of the entire experience. An engaging multiplayer mode will also keep you coming back for more provided you can find a reliable and serious enough group to partner with. Operation Flashpoint: Red River provides both enough realism and accessibility to cater to hardcore players while allowing those new to the genre to ease their way in without being turned away by a steep learning curve. Sub-par vocal recording and forced banter aside, Red River is a serviceable follow-up to Dragon Rising but does little to separate itself from its predecessors.
