I had a lot of fun trying to get the gold medals in the different courses, but I had the most fun competing for points against other players online. It is one thing to play for fun, but to compete for the top rank really appealed to me. Again, this game is actually a lot of fun even though it is so simple a concept. Shooting an orb at a star doesn't sound too complex, but mix in the other features including power-ups, points, rankings, medals, and different courses that get unlocked, not to mention the networking mode, and this game is a real winner!

For those of you hoping to get a taste of Orbz before setting aside 20 dollars, there is a demo available at the Tapwave website. Kudos to 21-6 Productions for creating a fun, simple, and addictive game and to Extreme AI for making a wonderful port that Zodiac Freaks everywhere can enjoy. Minus one or two small inconveniences, Orbz is a solid game that should be high on the Zodiac's must-have games list.

Orbz is the kind of game I wish there were more of; it manages to get simplicity down to an art form. Yes, extra facets, like character statistics and additional game modes would be nice, but they're certainly not necessary. Instead, Orbz creates a game experience that's intuitive, fun, and, well, just plain works. Orbz succeeds in catering to the average Joe (or Jane) who just wants to download a game and have it work; fortunately, the hardcore Mac gamers out there can pick it up knowing they'll have fun with it too.

Orbz may initially seem childish to the gaming elite, but the last laugh belongs to 21-6, as the sneering uber-Quake fan gets hooked and spends hours desperately trying to nail just– one– last– star! I myself went into Orbz with low expectations. My first impression was that it would be, at best, a 15-minute distraction I spent many hours slugging through to piece together a fair review. Good thing I’ve learned to ignore first impressions as needed. What I got was an immediately engaging experience; a package of graphical candy that mixed challenge and fun in equal parts, has more pros than cons, and achieved the almost unthinkable: It got my wife hooked. Orbz is simplistic in the extreme without sacrificing a single ounce of fun, dripping in laugh-out-loud moments and resplendent in its staggeringly wide appeal. It delivers the goods. 21-6 has produced a little winner, and with the right developer support, Orbz could blossom into a true classic.

Orbz's simple mechanics, nonviolent play, and cartoonish graphics make it a sure hit for families who want something everyone can play and find challenging.

MacintoshInside Mac Games (IMG)
Publisher GarageGames and designers 21-6 Productions have managed to put together a fairly entertaining and challenging non-violent computer game that will please players looking for alternatives to the expensive big budged titles saturating the Mac gaming market today. The game's visual and aural polish, its mix of action and strategic gameplay, and the choice of Solo or Online gameplay is sure to please a larger gaming audience ignored by a lot of the titles hitting the shelves today. The variety in gameplay, however, doesn't detract from the fact that the game is essentially another computer golfing game, and will fall flat quite quickly with gamers not interested in the Scottish sport. It's a decent game, however GarageGames' other Mac OS offerings, Marble Blast and ThinkTanks, make for much more appealing games.
