In other words ... love the original, love arcade racing? Love retro? Well ... Outrun 2 awaits you! Absolutely fantastic!

Outrun 2006 shines in the audio department, providing updated renditions of classic Outrun tunes like Splash Wave, Magical Sound Shower, and Passing Breeze. It's a shame there's no split-screen mode - multiplayer is available on-line only. Another annoyance is Coast to Coast's confusing menu system that makes you sift through tons of modes - few of which are explained anywhere. Compared to the PS2 edition of Coast to Coast, the graphics are slightly grainy, but the ability to use an Xbox controller (with those big triggers) gives this one an edge in the control department. You really can't go wrong with any version of Outrun 2006, which perfectly combines old-school gameplay with state of the art graphics.

My biggest beef with Outrun 2006 is its lack of split-screen action - multiplayer is on-line only! Also, it's way too hard to crack that high score screen, which is dominated by some guy named "Sega". Despite these oversights Coast to Coast is one truly spectacular game that manages to put the fun back into racing.

The formula for OutRun was perfected in the very first game and the sequels can't really hope to surpass the original game in terms of the impact they have had on gamers. That said, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is as good an OutRun game as you could hope for on either the PSP or PlayStation 2. The interconnectivity between the two versions is excellent and it's one of the few games where it is worth buying the two versions if you're an OutRun enthusiast. If you can only afford the one version then you can't really go wrong with either version as both are excellent. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is certainly the best arcade racer on the PlayStation 2 and the best racer so far (arcade or otherwise) on the PSP in our opinion.

It’s the simple pleasure of the racing itself that’s the overriding wonder of the entire package - when a game that has you driving over the same bits of track again and again and you don’t feel remotely bored, then you know it’s doing something right. While it’s not absolutely perfect - the framerate takes a hit during busy sections, and occasionally the visual opulence is just too much: witness the gaudy neon glare of Casino Town - OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is a Director’s Cut that’s massively superior to an already wonderful original, and is perhaps the ultimate poster child for blue-sky gaming; a real rainy Sunday afternoon treat.

It's strange how certain games are tied to a system so tightly that you don't believe they'll ever work on anything else. Outrun 2 is such a game, with fans swearing blind that it could never work as well as it does on the Xbox. So, when SEGA announced OutRun 2006: Cost 2 Coast for The PS2, Xbox and PSP (plus the PC) the news was met with much scepticism. Well, it's time to start believing as OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast might just be the best arcade racer available on all three systems.

The point's been made before on these pages, but OutRun2 draws it out again: SEGA is brilliant at five-minute racing games. There are 15 stages, laid out like balls in a snooker triangle; as you get to the end of each one in your Ferrari, you adjust the difficulty by taking the left path for an easier ride or right for a tougher one. All you're up against is the clock, and your only obstacles are the indecently curvaceous undulations and turns in the track, often peppered with slow-moving traffic.

You may recall Outrun from the arcade days. It's a cross-country racing game that requires that you reach specific checkpoints within a given time limit in order to continue playing. You may also remember Outrun 2, the most recent sequel to the original arcade version. And if you do, that's too bad because Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is basically a re-release of that game. Although it has one new mode and a few new features, it's still the same game at the core. It even uses the exact same tracks.

The original OutRun first graced arcades in that wonderful year known as 1986. In spite of the fact that Sega developed numerous sequels and spinoffs to the original OutRun in the following years, it would take eighteen years for Sega to release a game dubbed "OutRun 2". But in 2004 they did just that and released OutRun 2 in the arcades and later on the Xbox. An update, called OutRun 2 SP, would also be unleashed on arcade gamers before the end of the year. But what about the rest of us? Didn't we deserve to go outrunnin' too? Of course we did, which is why I'm incredibly pleased that Sega brought OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, a package containing OutRun 2, OutRun SP and a bunch of new content, to the PS2 earlier this year.

Sega proves why it’s the best at arcade racing. OutRun 2006 is a sequel to the Xbox-only OutRun 2, which was a sequel to the original OutRun from Sega’s history. Though the game hasn’t changed a whole lot, it still provides a lot to enjoy.
OutRun 2006 includes a plethora of single-player modes. The main mode is the Coast 2 Coast mode. The career mode of sorts includes races, challenges, and girlfriend missions (which are like the heart attack missions found outside of the career mode). As you progress through Coast 2 Coast, you’ll unlock new challenges and girls. The game’s titular mode (OutRun) has you running through tracks, making sure you hit the next checkpoint before time runs out. It also includes time attack and heart attack; in the latter you’re given challenges such as pass a certain number of cars to more ridiculous tasks like dribbling a humongous beach ball through the track. The game also includes the arcade version of OutRun2 SP.

The game also impresses in the visuals department with the graphics on par with the PS2 and only slight bouts of slowdown encountered. The LCD screen brings across the vibrant locations perfectly and considering the speed of the game, the level of detail is quite amazing. SEGA has also managed to bring across the original soundtrack with fan favorites as well as some of the new SP songs which really are fun to drive to.

If you're looking for a fun arcade racer with lots of Ferraris and the ability to do some fast and furious drifts, you won't go wrong picking up OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. Those who've already played OutRun2 may find the experience to be largely the same, but it's definitely still a worthwhile experience, especially for PS2 and PSP owners who may have missed out on that game. For Xbox owners who've already played OutRun2, there's less of a compelling reason to buy Coast 2 Coast. You'll have to figure out how much you really love OutRun before you shell out another 30 bucks for a very similar game.

Customization is the hottest thing happening in racing games right now. Buy new parts, slap on some 20s and proceed to tear ass through the city streets as the crowd gawks in awe. You won't find any of that in OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast. This is arcade racing at its finest, with no other emphasis besides roaring through course after branching, hairpin-littered course. In fact, the over-the-top nature of OutRun requires near-constant power-sliding and uncanny evasion skills, rather than grease monkey prowess.

In 1986, mastermind Yu Suzuki and his development team at AM2 were responsible for many an arcade classic for Sega, including the likes of After Burner and Hang-On. But then they introduced a breezy new arcade racer called Outrun, and the arcade world got turned upside down with its fast-paced antics and the inclusion of a nagging girlfriend if you drove just a bit too harshly and resulted in the flipping of your fancy Ferrari. Now, twenty years later, Sega carries on the tradition, with the help of Sumo Digital, with the release of Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. We dug the PS2 version, but what of the portable edition for Sony PSP?

It's been about a year and a half since the OutRun series was remade for the Xbox in the form of OutRun2. That game was a pretty simple but fun arcade racer that effectively captured the spirit of the original arcade game. This time around, Sega has chosen to release OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable, in addition to the Xbox. The new game doesn't stray very far at all from the formula established by OutRun2, offering gameplay that largely feels the same as the previous game, but with a good deal more content to explore and unlock.

I feel bad for Sega and its timing of the release of the new OutRun games. In 2004, the company released OutRun 2 for the Xbox. It was the long overdue sequel to Sega's 1986 arcade hit. About a month and a half prior, EA had released its acclaimed Burnout 3: Takedown. Given the proximity of the release dates, OutRun 2 got a lot of unfair comparisons to Takedown, despite the fact they they're rather different types of racing games.

f you’re an old fart, then you probably got your first seat time playing OutRun in the arcades. If you’re a really old fart, then you tuned your skills on Pole Position and the like, but those readers are probably a bit to decrepit to read this tiny ten point font…
So, let’s keep the driving game talk closer to the new. SEGA dominated the arcades with its Ferrari driver because, well, it simply looked better than anything lese out there at the time. The super-shallow learning curve also made OutRun accessible to those that couldn’t even get a Race Drivin’ car out of gear, let alone through the loop-the-loop. Simple and pretty was SEGA’s philosophy with OutRun, and to no surprise, it worked back in the day.

There’s a lot of content in the new Outrun 2006, but for good or bad, much of it will be very familiar to players of the earlier entries. Strike that, it’s actually really, really familiar. Highlights are the multiplayer races, a full version of OutRun SP from arcades, new cars and new locations. While some of the content is new, the game plays exactly the same – fast, thick with the flavor of classic arcades, and kind of simplistic. The PSP version, surprisingly, was my favorite, and it might be because it just feels right to do some quick cruising on a portable.

It's a curious decision that Sega would choose to include the original Outrun 2SP with their latest arcade-style racer, Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. After all, the 2006 version is basically the same game: same graphics, same gameplay, same music, even the same courses. The only real improvements are some new game modes and a handful of reworked courses. If you never played the original Outrun 2SP, then the 2006 edition is definitely worth at least a rental. It's easy to learn and the Coast 2 Coast mode gives you a wide variety of gameplay that's enjoyable on a very basic level. However, anyone who played the last game is going to be sorely disappointed. This model is definitely in need of a tune-up.

Possibly the best version of OutRun 2006 to pick up would be the PSP version, because OutRun is one of those games that you'll have an urge to play that'll come and go pretty quickly. Nevertheless, OutRun 2006 is a solid title for racing fans and those with some heavy arcade nostalgia. It's only $30, so it's worth picking up if you missed the Xbox's OutRun 2 or you've been craving a simple racing game.

Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is Sega's second current-gen installment of the Outrun arcade racing series. While OutRun2 (released exclusively for the Xbox in 2004 to good critical reception) was a recreation of the arcade game on the Xbox, Coast 2 Coast is more of a collection of OutRun series stages and cars. To be exact, Coast 2 Coast includes 30 stages and 12 licensed Ferraris from the arcade version of OutRun2, as well as the entire version of OutRun2 SP, and upgraded arcade version of OutRun 2 that took incorporated some of the extra elements (such as additional tracks and music) from the OutRun2 on Xbox.
