Overall, Overlord Minions is a missed opportunity for the Nintendo DS. It had a lot of potential, but it was lost to the inaccuracy of game play. If the controls were adjusted even a little, it would vastly improve the game. The storyline was really good. It had a lot of clever elements, while keeping the sense of humor the series is known for. Fans of the series will like the new Overlord experience, but falls short of making Gnarl happy. With a few adjustments with the controls, Overlord Minions would have done a lot better.

Ultimately, Overlord: Minions is a game for puzzle fans who have a high tolerance for frustrating design. It's a great game that sometimes fights with players due to its loose and sometimes confused stylus control, but the game's fun-factor and satisfying puzzling gameplay overrides the annoyances to create a pretty good little portable title. Fans of the series could stand to lose a few bucks on this one. Due to the relatively short campaign and lack of replay value, you might want to hold off buying it at full price.

Despite its simplistic premise, Overlord: Minions ramps up in complexity pretty quickly, yet remains quite fun. If you’re a fan of environmental puzzle-based games with cooperation elements (did you like The Lost Vikings?), you'll get a kick out of Overlord: Minions.

Overlord Minions could have ended up a relatively high-scoring Nintendo DS game, but the sloppy touch screen controls definitely knock it down. It's far more frustrating than it should be, and that's a shame because there's a lot of clever elements in this action puzzler, and it looks and sounds like a quality DS title. A few tweaks in the control department before release would have done this game wonders.

Don’t even think about playing this on an old DS – everything’s so brown and murky you need the power of DS Lite to see what’s happening. There’s some woeful glitching and crudely drawn static cutscenes too. The game’s entirely stylus controlled, which generally works well, but it can descend into incoherent screen-swiping during combat. The whole thing just feels insubstantial, and while we’d say it’s passable for younger gamers, there’s a teen rating on the box for some reason.

It’s hard to recommend Overlord: Minions in its current state. The frustration factor is too high, thanks in part to the broken controls. Those with a high patience level will find a few great ideas here, but unfortunately, the majority will likely be unable to make it that far.

Minions is a fun diversion and will please fans of the series looking to experience more of the world of Overlord in a different play-style, but it just falls short of an all-around solid experience.

The game can easily be completed in less than 10 hours and offers little motivation to revisit stages, though the obsessive may enjoy breaking record times and exploring the series' lore in the bonus encyclopedia. Overlord: Minions should have been an interesting puzzler with a dark edge, but it's just an aggravating chore flooded with control faults that permeate almost every aspect of its lackluster gameplay.

Despite the interesting concept (it reminds us of the old-school Lost Vikings games), Overlord Minions doesn't get the job done, thanks to unimpressive visuals and broken gameplay. Minions' service, denined.

The game's most redeeming quality is easily the boss battle for each chapter. These manage to be mildly entertaining, and also ease the irritation of progressing through the repetitive and boring stages. Each battle requires you to figure out how to use your minions, their skills, and the environment to exploit the boss' weak spot -- which is just more interesting than the regular moment-to-moment gameplay. Unfortunately, there are only six of these battles, and they just aren't enough to make you want to sit through the rest of the game.
