Peter Jackson’s King Kong is the most exciting, immersive game you will play this year, and almost any other year for that matter. Hopefully, it will set the standards for future movie-based games much as the 1933 film set standards for future generations of film-makers. So play as Kong, play as man, but just play.

Peter Jackson's King Kong is one of the most intense experiences I've had with game in a while. This is for sure buy for the Xbox, or Xbox 360. The plot doesn't let go, it grabs you and throws you into the heart of Skull Island, surviving as man and dominating as Kong. King Kong deserves you attention you will be amazed.

While King Kong is nearly a perfect game, there is the occasional glitch of a creature becoming stuck in the scenery. Gamers with an aversion to first-person action may want to pass on this game, because the dark, rainy environments and frantic action can make it hard to get your bearings. Finally, after completing this harrowing journey it's unlikely you'll want to replay this game anytime soon, although it is possible to play individual stages for score. King Kong is one of the most immersive and memorable games I've experienced. Brilliant on the 360, I hear it's nearly as impressive on the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube.

It's man versus beast captured in astonishing gameplay, creating one great memory after another. It's too bad it only clocks in at six hours. The final scene in NY is a letdown, as well. Regardless, this shouldn't steer you away from one of the most intense adventures to date.

It’s hard to fault King Kong as it’s such a well-made game. There are never any moments of annoyance or frustration, and every single chapter in the game is enjoyable, with only the very last level (unsurprisingly in New York City) being a bit of a disappointment. The game is very short, with a completion time of around 8 hours, so it wont last you forever, but I’d much rather have a superbly made game like this lasting that length of time over something much poorer taking me 20 hours to complete. So to conclude, forget what you think of movie licensed games, King Kong just changed everything. This is an excellent game and deserves your attention.

But by the end of King Kong there's still plenty to go back and see; and there are some standout moments that will probably stay with you forever. As a piece of gaming entertainment it's well worth buying regardless of what you might think of the movie - but assuming it's the action blockbuster it promises to be, it'll serve as the perfect accompaniment, fusing thrilling first-person combat with some of the most explosive hand to hand sequences you can imagine. If only all movie-based games were this entertaining.

King Kong the movie won't be released into theaters for another few weeks but Ubi Soft knows that missing the all important November release date could spell trouble for game sales, especially if movie reviews are lackluster even if the game happens to be great; which it most certainly is for the most part. If you're a diehard Kong fan and don't want to ruin the movie experience I can only highly recommend NOT playing the game as it follows the events of the movie.

Forget everything you know about big name movie licensed games. Forget that they're often rushed out the door, that gameplay is sub-par, and that marketing dictates all. Peter Jackson's King Kong is the exception to the rule. It may be based on a Hollywood film, but underneath it all, this is one gorgeous, expertly designed action-adventure.

PlayStation 21UP
There are so many ways to describe King Kong that we have trouble narrowing it down to just one. It's a great example of a movie tie-in that is easy to play, it's a successful combination of a first-person adventure and a third-person beat-'em-up, and at times it even feels like a dungeon crawler. But at its core, it's an extremely good (and extremely simple) survival horror game.

PlayStation 2Digital Entertainment News (den)
In the end, if a PS2 is all you own, King Kong is one of the better action games you can buy for it; but if you are one of the lucky few who own an Xbox 360 already, as well, then the 360 version is definitely the one to go for, even despite the extra $10 markup – which is pure advantage-taking by Ubisoft, but they're hardly alone in that. Oh well. Anyway, like I said at the beginning, King Kong is definitely an exception to the rule that all movie-adaptation games suck. This one most definitely does not.

The pace of the game is very fast and is over pretty quickly. It should take six, seven hours at most to complete. It should also be known that the end of the game, the final conclusion, isn’t the best thing about the game. The ending really could have used some additional excitement. Nearly the entire game is on Skull Island, but when King Kong is taken to New York City at the end, you’d expect some action going on there. There is some destruction Kong is able to inflict on the city, but not nearly what you’d think.

For a game with one of the most ridiculously long-winded name this year, Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie also has one of the most enjoyable if short-lived gameplay experiences. The game is practically a work of art, but that may not be enough for everyone.

Toll!

It’s common knowledge that when it comes to games based on movies, the good ones are few and far between. And by that we mean that most of them are cynically produced crap; horribly under-funded and under-developed, made as an afterthought to be nothing more than just an expensive piece of merchandise. It takes something truly special to break the mould and become a good game in its own right.

I will say that the alternate ending is well worth unlocking, but even that isn't enough to satisfy my urge for a really compelling conclusion. It’s not just the pervading craft behind Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie that makes it memorable as one of the best movie-based video games. It’s the daring of Michel Ancel and his team to make a game that ventures outside the typically rigid formula imposed on these types of projects. You feel like you’re playing a game drawn from the spirit of the film, yet not confining the gamemaker’s personal vision to the sideline.

King Kong should make one thing abundantly clear: Ubisoft’s Michel Ancel is one of the industry’s most gifted game creators. A vast majority of this game is a seminar on how to create a world that is intense and dramatic, as well as providing gameplay that’s both deep enough for hardcore gamers and intuitive enough for even the most casual movie fan. In terms of truly capturing the spirit of the film on which it’s based, Kong is probably the most accomplished movie-to-game translation to date, due in part to the close partnership between Ancel and director Peter Jackson.

Danke, Herr Ancel!

King Kong really is a thrilling game – a roller coaster of ups and downs, with nary a boring point. Playing as Jack is thoroughly fun, and playing as Kong from time to time really puts the icing on the cake. If the game weren't so short or so linear, or maybe had some other incentive to play after the initial run-through – perhaps a two-player fighting mode, or a co-op adventure, it would be nearly perfect. As it stands, it's hard to justify $50 for a short game. But it is an excellent game while it lasts, and one that is definitely worth going through, whether that is with a purchase or merely a rental.

Having accomplished a major feat by brilliantly bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy to life, director Peter Jackson set his sights on a much bigger and hairier project. The legacy of King Kong has been chronicled well after the cinematic achievement that was the 1933 classic, having spawned a remake that starred Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lang as well as questionable sequels and the unfortunate pairing of Kong and Godzilla. Now in the year 2005 Kong is king again on the big screen as well as on the smaller screen with Peter Jackson’s King Kong for the Xbox 360.

The game's overall quality is countered a bit by the length, which comes in at somewhere around eight hours -- the first four of which don't serve much purpose other than to immerse you in the world and prepare you for the great second half -- but the payoff for those who make it all the way through to New York is awfully nice and well worth experiencing for anyone who's interested in the game. The whole package does a fantastic job of building up to a climactic ending, and it's one you won't want to miss.

Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game Of The Movie is a very solid game that is a lot of fun. The biggest issue I had with the game is its length. It is a rather short game, and because of that, I would suggest renting it first before using your hard earned money to buy it. Other than the length, King Kong is a great, and it would have been even better if you could play as King Kong more. I would highly recommend this game to just about anyone looking for a something a little different.

Michel Ancel is one of the most masterful, yet most under-appreciated game developers in the industry. The creator of Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil – the Frenchman has made some of the best games to ever grace any game system. The industry calls him the “French Miyamoto” – a direct comparison to Nintendo’s own creative genius.

Dispensing with the film's opening act—a smart choice, since the task of signing a film's leading lady is difficult to express via button-mashing—the game spends most of its time on Skull Island, and it adds significantly to the film's prehistoric wonderland. In a clever innovation, you either play first-person as Jack Driscoll, the heroic screenwriter, or third-person as Kong himself, though the big ape doesn't come into play until the 11th chapter, and is only in a few sequences thereafter. The bulk of the adventure is behind Jack's sights, which is just as well, since Kong's movements are disappointingly labored and Jack's limited ground-level perspective enhances the creatures' size and intensity.

Game length and story balance aside, Michel Ancel and the other folks at Ubisoft have done the almost unheard of and made a very good game based on the events of a movie in Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. Considering the last time the iconic character of King Kong came to consoles in the USA was in 1982 on the Atari 2600 in a game by Tigervision, it was way overdue. And when you further consider the quality percentages between the crapfests that have been the majority of the numerous Godzilla games and the two Kong games, the giant hairy ape beats the giant scaly reptile hands down in the game department.

King Kong is possibly one of the most well-known beasts in the U.S., with Godzilla as a close tie. Even The Lost World: Jurassic Park follows a story very similar to the original King Kong. Many years after it was first released, gamers finally have a chance to wander around Skull Island and go heads up against a V-Rex. The game is short, but still fun. It’s definitely worth the time if you ever get a chance to play it.

King Kong easily represents one of the better film-to-game translations released in recent years. This is a tightly delivered adventure with barely a dull moment, and the ability to play as two such wildly different protagonists as Jack Driscoll and King Kong is a real treat. It's just too bad that the two characters' respective sections weren't more evenly balanced, and that the game ends so soon and with a final level that feels tacked on. But those problems aside, this is a game that immerses fully you in a quality adventure, the likes of which will probably make you want to see Peter Jackson's film all the more. It's the thing that so many licensed games shoot for, and so few achieve. King Kong hits the mark, and hits it fierce.

The game itself picks up right as the ship reaches the gloomy island. You open your eyes to see the world through the perspective of Jack, just as he's being lowered in a rowboat, along with Denham, Ann, and a pair of sailors, to set forth for the shore. It's stormy waters, and sure enough, things go awry when large chunks of rock begin plummeting into the sea, right near your boat. You wake up on the beach, with the almost angelic Ann standing over you. You're marooned, confused, and wondering what those horrible, beastly shrieks are that are coming from further within the island. All this happens before you even pick up a weapon, and you'll honestly spend the first 10 minutes or so of the game just looking around, taking in the scenery and gaining your bearings.

The first-person action adventure/third-person gorilla beat-'em-up combo genre has been born in Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. As the long-winded title suggests, this is the game based on the upcoming retelling of the 1933 film by the Academy Award-winning director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. King Kong feels more like a stand-alone product than a handy cash-in for the license, however. This game blends the aforementioned first-person action sequences with its third-person (or should it be third-gorilla?) components remarkably well, as you traverse the perils of Skull Island as both screenwriter Jack Driscoll and the 800-pound gorilla himself, King Kong. It also helps that both components, on their own standing, can be a great deal of fun when the game is at its best--which, fortunately, is the majority of the time.

Overall, King Kong is a good title that shows film to game translations can work well if done properly. The game provides an atmosphere that is extremely immersive and an intense experience right to the end. However it may be wise to rent instead of purchase, especially to anyone that the film does not appeal too, simply because of the short lifespan of the game.

Some gamers may balk at King Kong’s linearity and short length (eight hours at most). And I’m in agreement with other curmudgeons who tire of seeing every freaking movie turned into a game these days. But this one’s the exception: It’s a smart, expertly made little thriller. Don’t be too snobby to pick it up.

So, what's wrong with Kong? Well, like most Hollywood blockbuster movies, it is more a triumph of style over substance, and in this case the lack of substance comes in the form of a quite short running time - you should crack the game open in under ten hours easily on your first run-through. There are additional objectives and better stuff to unlock as you go along, so there's some incentive to replay it - beyond the fact that it's one of the simplest and yet most captivating games to come along for a long while - but there's no denying that on the games scale, this feels a little lightweight. It's probably fairer to judge it on the movie side of things - for the equivalent of seven or so movie tickets, you're getting a similar amount of play content.

Summing up, King Kong is actually a very, very good game to play. Problems with it exist in that (a) the game is far to short in duration and can be completed in less than a day's play and (b) you don't get control of Kong as much as you would like. That said this is certainly a must play title on the 360, just remember to give it the justice it deserves and play it on a HD TV.

Unless you’ve seen the movie, the game doesn’t do a good job of conveying the narrative. The game’s biggest pitfall is its inability to capture the emotional connection between Kong and Ann that really comes through in the film. The jungle’s beauty and awe-inspiring spectacle are all present and accounted for, but the story lacks heart.

If you’re one of those people that basically writes off licensed movies games, you might want to give King Kong. Even if Ubisoft didn’t get all the plot points right, it’s a fine looking game with fun gameplay for the most part. Now let’s just see the tables turn and hope that Peter Jackson can make Halo a decent movie.

And yet, is King Kong worth playing? The answer is Yes! Even if it's short and relatively easy, Ubisoft has managed to create an atmosphere that will be imprinted on your brain once you start going through the first puzzles and fight the first monsters. This is probably the third time I'm saying this, but Ubisoft has created such an interesting universe that now I really want to see King Kong 2 or Adventures in Skull Island, when - and if - they'll decide to develop such titles. I don't know what Ubisoft has in store for this franchise, but this game really deserves a sequel.

King Kong is a truly immersive adventure that King Kong fans shouldn’t miss. Because of its length, it’s hard to ultimately recommend purchasing the game for its full retail price, but renting this one is ideal. Some fresh design mechanics and intriguing story progression make King Kong a very enjoyable and absorbing adventure for all gamers. Peter Jackson did well to put Michael Ancel in charge of this one.

As such, it's fair to say that Kong will probably pop up in the second-hand bins of your favorite local software emporium rather quicker than many of this year’s biggest hits do - but at the same time it's a game that everyone should play. It's also a title that anyone making a movie tie-in should study very carefully, as it solidly creates a new standard for such titles. If all movie tie-ins are as fun as Kong, we're in for a bright gaming future indeed.

With New Zealand Director Peter Jackson having achieved both technical and artistic merits with his triple-crown adaptation of J. R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, the man Elijah Woods once called a "hobbit" has reached the state of the Midas touch. From now on nearly everything he's involved with glows with promise. That he would be so open to work with a game company such as Ubisoft shouldn't come as such a surprise... but it is. What directors other than the Wachowski brothers have worked so closely with a videogame company and given such access to their development team, processes, and assets?

King Kong is a game that by design ought to suffer from a lack of identity. Most of the time you're playing through the eyes of Jack Driscoll, a gallant sort of chap desperate to extricate a damsel from enormously hairy distress, while some of the time you're working from over the shoulder of the very architect of her plight, the aforementioned enormously hairy Kong.

Despite the typical industry pitfalls associated with forgettable movie licensed games and hurried system launch titles, Peter Jackson's King Kong manages to deliver the goods with the unlikely blend of first-person shooting and third-person gorilla fighting in this entertaining and highly engaging jungle adventure. With plenty of challenging and violent monster battles set in gorgeous island environments, Kong has no trouble proving he' still the top banana.

This Christmas he will release his first film since the Rings conclusion – King Kong. Early clips and teaser trailers sent our anticipation meter through the roof. We could only dream about the intense battles that await Kong and his most lethal adversary, T-Rex. Or will his most lethal adversary turn out to be man?

Even with all of its gameplay flaws, Michael Ancel’s latest video game is an interactive experience that I truly enjoyed. King Kong is easily one of the most cinematically stunning video games that have ever been created. There aren’t many games that rival King Kong in terms of presentational value and its a good sign of the industry moving towards a greater cinematic style of game development for a select few genres. Unfortunately, I tend to believe that these presentational aspects are a novelty that eventually wear off and when it does the only thing left is gameplay. With this said, Kong’s gameplay aspects are rather repetitive and tedious and it can become quite of a nuisance to continously light spears and burn bushes down over and over again. It’s a neat puzzle element, but when it’s the only puzzle element in the game, it’s more annoying than it is challenging, if even that.

With the current-gen consoles (PS2, Xbox, GameCube), many game publishers make a base version of their game and "port" it so it works on the other consoles. When the Xbox 360 launched, only two companies tried their hand at releasing next-gen versions of their games at the same time as their current-gen counterparts. The first of those companies, Activision, released Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (review) and Gun (review), both of which were only marginally better than their current-gen counterparts. The second company, Ubisoft, tried to capitalize on the mania surrounding Peter Jackson's King Kong motion picture, releasing probably the longest-named videogame ever created: Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of the Movie.

It's always a little weird when a game based on a film comes out a good couple of weeks before the source material, but that's exactly the case with the exhaustingly-titled Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. After all, why spoil the film by playing through the game?

Also, Peter Jackson entrusted the game to Ubisoft instead of EA this time around. The question is: Did Ubi do a better job? From Peter Jackson's point of view, they did. From a gamer's point of view... not really. This is yet another movie-based game that offers next to no replay value and is extremely short. But, like I said before, the game will scare you when you play as a human character and when you're Kong you get to battle huge monsters in a captivating action-packed Jackson-flavored ambiance.

There isn’t much replay value in King Kong. With the lack of any sort of Live/Co-Op play, you won’t find yourself going back to the game once you have beaten it. The achievements are all easy and there is only a few. There isn’t any sort of collectibles in the game to extend the length of the game.

In the end, King Kong comes off as an uneven experience, but one with plenty of invigorating moments that make the whole thing feel worth it. You're ultimately left with the feeling that it was a bit rushed, however, which makes you wonder what the game would have been like had it the proper time to germinate. I won't hesitate to say, however, that during its best moments, it's certainly one of the most exciting and engrossing games I've played in a long time. It's just unfortunate that the apparent cut corners take the wind out of its sails sometimes. That said, it's certainly worth experiencing, though if you're concerned about length, know that Kong is fairly short. Consider this when making the "rent or buy" decision.

The concept is for the player to be completely immersed in the adventure, as you are in the dark of the movie cinema, which means the removal of any onscreen artificialities. There are no health bars or ammo indicators to remind you that you're playing a game. With a rather abrupt final sequence it does seem to rush to its climax, but despite its brevity, this is an unforgettable trip through the realm of Kong.

Despite being an oh-so-easy-to-dislike game of movie, King Kong is a strong effort, and although it never reaches the pinnacle of the sub-genre alongside the likes of the legendary Goldeneye or The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, it can proudly sit on the next tier beneath them. Although the Kong sections and the overall conciseness bring things down a little, it is still a fantastically entertaining game, and well worth a look if you are a fan of the movie or of first-person adventures. Did I mention how rubbish those Kong sections are?!

On the whole, Peter Jackson's King Kong was rather good and has set standards for immersion that will most undoubtedly be implemented into forthcoming games. The graphics were amazing, and the story unfolded in a quick, action-packed manner. While playing as Kong was a bit too simplistic and the gameplay length was disappointing, King Kong was a good title, although it could have done with a little more fleshing out.

Although King Kong is a technically impressive marvel, the sheer amount of repetition in its first half is insufferable even with the game's anemic six hour length. King Kong is redeemed in its last few hours, but a game this short with such limited replay value is really best suited for a rental. Rent It.

There's no denying that as far as movie licensed games go, King Kong is at the top of the tree, but as for being a truly great game in its own right, it falls a little short. It's entertaining, technically impressive and often immersive, but it's woefully short, often repetitive and not quite all it could have been. It's a bit like a rollercoaster: great while it lasts, but it's over in an instant and it'll soon be forgotten when something else comes along. Enjoy it for what it is - just don't expect a game of blockbuster proportions.

Where the games based on Peter Jackson's interpretation of The Lord of the Rings have trod fairly traditional grounds, the one based on his rendering of King Kong does anything but. Peter Jackson's King Kong takes some pretty bold steps to distance itself from the multitude of by-the-numbers movie licensed-games, and it succeeds on many accounts.

After playing the PSP version of King Kong, I was left wondering what the big deal was with gaming editors raving about with the handling of the Kong license. It felt like a good game, and I certainly figured that the home game had some cool stuff that just couldn't be done on PSP, but this didn't feel like the great and amazing game that I had heard about. Then I played the home game, and found out what it was that I was missing...

Unfortunately, games are supposed to be played and not simply looked at or listened to. King Kong is short and still manages to be a flawed and redundant gaming experience. This isn't a bad game—just one that manages to underachieve in a lot of ways. In a crowded holiday gaming season where countless good games will go unplayed, most gamers can safely skip this one and wait until it hits the bargain bin.

King Kong was one of the shortest games I have played in some time. If a person played a lot of games with duel analog sticks they could beat the game in less time you could go and see the movie (The movie is 3 hrs 20 min long). In the end not even great graphical output could save this game. You can go back and play each level again to open other special features like an alternative ending, interviews with Peter Jackson, Art and more but it does not add any value to the game or gameplay. Do yourself a favor and go see the movie instead.

I beat Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie that was a Remake of the Original Movie, then promptly returned it. This game would have been a lot better if it wasn’t plagued by so many poor design decisions. Imagine a free-roaming King Kong game, with a main plot line that you can ignore as you run through the jungle, beating the piss out of dinosaurs with tree trunks and rocks. That would have been awesome. Instead, we were given this six to eight hour snooze fest. Maybe I was a victim of my own expectations, but either way, I didn’t enjoy this game at all, and I suggest that you avoid it.

When you look at the poor quality graphics, short gameplay and relatively empty environments, it becomes rather obvious that King Kong for the PSP was rushed to coincide with the theatrical release of the movie. It’s unfortunate since a game combining shooting and melee fighting would have found a nice audience on the PSP. Instead, we get a mess of a port that doesn’t even come close to being a worthwhile play on the PSP. There is definitely no beauty to be found here.
