This game is definitely a winner. The included 110-page hint book allows players to help themselves if the adventuring gets too difficult. Phantasy Star II is for those who love role-playing games, and it should be added to their library of Genesis games.

I won't lie. The odds are you've either already beaten Phantasy Star II or you never will. If you come to this game afresh, it will gleefully kick your arse and gloat over your broken corpse.

A challenging quest packed with gameplay.
GenesisThe Review Busters (2009)
With its high difficulty curve average gamers may decide to let Phantasy Star II stay where it’s at. Not playing this game is a crime so just suck it up and play the game. Phantasy Star II can take up to fifty hours to complete, thirty if you are good at RPGs. Some RPG games out there today don’t take that long. If you can get a hold of this game for the Sega Genesis then do so. However, if you can’t and you own a Wii then buy it on the Virtual Console.
GenesisPower Play (Jul, 1990)

RPGs aren't my thing, but this one has a monstrous quest anyone can get involved with and lost in. Plan to spend many days solving this 6-meg brainbuster!

WiiIGN (Feb 18, 2008)
In the end, Phantasy Star II is an impressive example of classic old-school role-playing. Its most notable positive traits are its unique setting and theme – especially since it's the first and only Phantasy Star game to come to the Virtual Console so far – and its epic overall length. You'll get a lot of lasting value for your investment of 800 Wii Points, as this quest could take you 40 hours or more to complete. The negatives that might keep you from cashing in the eight bucks right away, though, would be the considerable level of challenge and the potential for tedium. Only buy Phantasy Star II if you know you'll be prepared to spend a significant amount of time taking care of old-school RPG "chores" like level-grinding – because without that willingness, your experience in going after the Mother Brain might not last very long.

The early days of the Genesis' existence were marked by the slow but steady stream of software from Sega and its handful of third party licensees. The system launched without an RPG, but Sega came through a few months later with what was, at the time, the largest such game ever to grace a console. Phantasy Star II clocked in at a massive six megs, and was so huge and deep that it came bundled with its own strategy guide. How's that for intimidating? Yes, the single best game from the original 8-bit Master System got the sequel it deserved and then some. Even today, it's renowned (or hated, depending on your preference) for a massive quest and unrelenting difficulty.
GenesisGame Informer Magazine (Jun, 2008)
However, for those with more than a passing interest in console history, this title and the other early incarnations of the series are a frequently overlooked early step towards the sprawling open world epics of today.

With numerous Zelda games, from all eras, plus Paper Mario, Breath of Fire II and sundry other role players already on the VC, Phantasy Star can't help looking like a second, or even third, best option. Worthwhile for the rare few who have already worked their way through those superior titles, but missable for everyone else.
WiiNintendo Life (Feb 16, 2008)
There’s no denying that Phantasy Star 2 is a title worthy of your time and effort. Very few RPG franchises feel and play in the same way that Sega’s epic series does and, although it has a few irksome shortcomings, it’s unrealistic to expect a game of this age to contain RPG features that have only appeared in recent titles. If you’re a fan of the genre and have a 40 hour hole in your spare time, then this should fit the bill quite nicely.
Xbox (UK) (Jun 17, 2009)
Get past that initial barrier, however, and you'll find one of the better examples of the early RPG genre, and a game of depth and longevity that really stands out alongside its platform and fighting peers. It's hard to imagine who'd want to grumble about a weighty adventure like this for such a low price.
Xbox 360IGN (Jun 26, 2009)
It’s difficult to give the downloadable version of Phantasy Star II too big of a recommendation considering it was released for a much lower price as part of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection along with a slew of other classics including Phantasy Star I, III, and IV. But pricing aside, Phantasy Star II is one of the truly classic role playing games of the 16 bit era. While it has some technical issues like the truncation of words and a less than elegant menu system it stands the test of time with its long and enjoyable story.
Xbox 360NZGamer (Jul 03, 2009)
If you ever wished to play this classic game or would like to immerse yourself in a solid RPG and can handle a very simple graphical style, there's no reason not to grab this. It might be a little clunky compared to modern examples of the genre (and we're not talking just about the graphics here) but it's actually aged rather well.

There's no reason to play this game, not even once. Play Phantasy Star III (which is okay, if I recall) or Phantasy Star IV (which rules). Anything except this piece of crap.
GenesisComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Nov, 1990)
For those with the willpower not to be tempted by the Dark Force of Marketing, Phantasy Star II is a challenging and enjoyable intermediate level game with superb combat and animated graphics.
