The premise of The Legend of Jack Sparrow is amazing. Retelling the original film and additional segments through Sparrow’s revisionist history sounds like a great idea and it is. In addition, the presentation is mostly up to par and recreates the film’s atmosphere well. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay doesn’t deviate much from your typical beat-em-up, which becomes monotonous and repetitive at the end of the game’s nine or so hours. That said, if you’re a fan of the Jack Sparrow, the gameplay is solid enough to allow you to enjoy the story and all of his shenanigans.

For a film based on an amusement-park ride, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl turned out, by most accounts, surprisingly well. Its success as a fun, swashbuckling adventure was due in no small part to Johnny Depp's Oscar-nominated performance as pirate extraordinaire Captain Jack Sparrow. Bethesda Softworks and 7 Studios attempt to put the spotlight on this bizarrely magnetic character's past escapades with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, going so far as to get Depp himself to record original dialogue for the game. The idea of learning more about how Captain Jack turned into the charismatic brigand we know him as is enticing, but The Legend of Jack Sparrow can't manifest much of the charm or personality of the character, and the gameplay itself is bland and repetitive--not at all evocative of Captain Jack Sparrow's woozy enthusiasm.

The best thing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow has going for it is its entertaining storyline. It's fun to follow along on the adventures of Jack Sparrow and see what sort of trouble he gets himself in to. What's not fun being forced in to taking part in the repetitive and uninspired gameplay in order to experience it. Johnny Depp adds a good deal of credibility to his role in the game (and the movies, for that matter), but as far as late-generation PS2 titles go, this one should walk the plank.

For a game that was inspired by a movie that was inspired by a theme park ride that was originally inspired by a book, The Legend of Jack Sparrow is less than inspired.

PlayStation 2Deeko (Jul 05, 2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is, all thing considered, a mixed bag in terms of actual gaming. It is incredibly shallow and repetitive, offering up a fair amount of wasted potential and providing the gamer with little or nothing to really go on, but manages to still be fun. Like I said, it stands to reason that the developers had all the right pieces to the puzzle, they simply didn't assemble it correctly. The hack and slash element is pretty basic, the graphics are substandard, and the upgrade system, while interesting, doesn't provide enough for a gamer to get into. However, the storyline, situations and vocal performances are stimulating enough that you'll at least want to finish the game. It's not the worst game ever made, most certainly, but you can see where it could have been better.

Da spiele ich lieber Devil May Cry 3.

PlayStation 2Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) (Aug, 2006)
Yet between the whole pirate vibe, the decent flashback-centered story featuring Johnny Depp's excellent voice acting (this is no mailed-in job - and it definitely earns some guffaws), and the simple yet sufficient controls, this game manages to hoist its way to decent status. It may be stupid fun - and it certainly gets monotonous - but at least it is fun. Apologetic kids should be thrilled.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow” for PS2 reeks of a lazy attempt to leach even more money off the hottest property of the summer. Although there’s enough of a game to satisfy diehard Jack Sparrow enthusiasts, all other gamers would be best advised steering away from these seas.

PlayStation 2IGN (Jun 28, 2006)
To sum up, The Legend of Jack Sparrow has all the right parts, but none of them gel together well. The swordplay never truly excites, while the puzzles and enemies never rise above mediocrity. The game looks decent for a PS2 game, but fans of the action genre will need to look elsewhere for carnage on the high seas.

PlayStation 2GameZone (Jul 13, 2006)
The Curse of the Black Pearl, the movie, was surprisingly delightful and created a very lucrative franchise for Disney. The Legend of Jack Sparrow was very disappointing as a game and hurt the franchise’s appeal as a consequence.

PlayStation 2GamingTrend (2006)
Disney may have a massive hit in the theaters but they have one heck of a dud for the PS2. This almost recalls the fabled ET in terms of rushing something, ANYTHING, out the door to cash-in on a popular movie only with better voice work. The graphics are probably comparable. With the lone exception of Johnny Depp, there is exactly zero worth recommending here. Save your money and take the kids to see the movie again and you won’t have to listen to them ask you why this game sucks so much that they think you’re punishing them.

PlayStation 21UP (Jul 05, 2006)
Legend started with a great hook, and it's got a great movie franchise, a theme-park ride, and the Disney brand backing it up. Jack's narrative is amusing, and pirates are just deliciously cult and cool. But the game walks the plank when you realize that it's a bland, buccaneer version of God of War.

PlayStation 2GamesRadar (Jun 27, 2006)
The Legend of Jack Sparrow is bogged down by a host of flaws, but in the end, it's still a passably entertaining sword-brawler. Its relatively short run-time, clever script and Johnny Depp voice-over are enough to justify a rental for fans of the film, but we can't imagine shelling out $40 to play this.

Overall, I enjoyed certain aspects of The Legend of Jack Sparrow more than others. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie which opens a few days from now, but Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow didn't really convince me that gamers should rush out and buy it. Fans of Depp and the franchise might do well to rent it and try, but if you're looking for a new take on the overly full action/fighting genre, then I'm afraid The Legend of Jack Sparrow most likely won't satiate your desires. Try this one before you buy it.

WindowsVideo Game Talk (Aug 05, 2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is a game that wants to be loved by fans of the movies. The atmosphere is rich enough, Depp is as good as ever, and the concept of an action game involving Sparrow and Turner was enough to catch my eye. Unfortunately the action is practically brain-dead, the puzzles are glaringly obvious, and several things speak volumes about a game lacking polish. Casual gamers who are fans of the films will get the most out of this but just keep in mind there are better crafted games on the market. Even then I wouldn't go much more than a rental for this one due to the linearity and length of the adventure.

If you loved the movies, you'll enjoy the game. The game itself won't do much to endear itself to people looking for solid gameplay.

Mensch, Buena Vista!

PlayStation 2Game Shark (Jul 14, 2006)
In the end 7 Studios' The Legend of Jack Sparrow disappoints the most in the gameplay department. If you strip away the license and the voice acting what's left is a short, uninspired, linear action adventure game that has awkward execution. That's a real shame, because if this game had some inspired gameplay to go along with it's grand presentation it could have been a serious hit. Fans of the films should at least give this game a rental to experience its more positive voice acting and storytelling elements. For the rest a rental before a purchase is a must.

PlayStation 2Thunderbolt Games (Jul 20, 2006)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow is the exact opposite of the film series. While the movies feature lavish visual effects, the game does not thanks to a poor frame rate and second-rate animations. Although the movies have impressive action and swashbuckling swordplay, the game is burdened with a clunky fighting system that rarely delivers thrills. The only constant between the two mediums is Johnny Depp’s amusing portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. While Mr. Depp was enough to rescue the flawed films, he’s not nearly enough to compensate for this lame game.

PlayStation 2Digital Press - Classic Video Games (Jul 18, 2006)
Even beyond the simplistic and rather stupid challenges, Pirates captures nothing of what makes these films enjoyable. Jack Sparrow's wit is kept to a minimum, the action is bland, and the animation is oddly choppy (especially when opening treasure chests). Sword fighting can make for a great video game. Unfortunately, the dull hacking and some weak slashing in this adaptation fails to excite gaming or movie fans.

At least you won’t have to play this weak game for very long because it’s short, linear, and has no multiplayer. Even a drunken sailor knows what to do when faced with this kind of fool’s gold. Anybody got a plank?

PlayStation 2Eurogamer.net (UK) (Aug 01, 2006)
There's plenty of opportunity for a suitably piratical action adventure game and the Pirates of the Caribbean universe certainly deserves one that lives up to its charming strengths. Unfortunately, while the movie's version of piracy is a picturesque mixture of high-adventuring, quick-witted, swashbuckling derring-do, The Legend of Jack Sparrow is a weak mixture of low-brow, quick cash-in, button-bashing doggy-do. If you will, a load of Yaaaar!-se.

PlayStation 2The Video Game Critic (Aug 06, 2006)
After a while you get the impression that no one at Bethesda has ever played a video game before; they thought they were inventing the first one! Gamers with super low expectations or clueless magazines might approve of this, but hardcore gamers will see right through it.

You really don’t want to get this game. Although you might be poised to buy it because you loved the films so much, don’t be tricked. This game does not live up to the standards of even the average PS2 game. It’s a shame that it carries the name of “The Pirates of the Caribbean.”
