Gaming Age
Everything is easy to control, and there's not a lot of confusing menu junk to sort thru. You'll have no problem jumping in, and I definitely believe you'll be hooked from the starting point on out. A great way to spend $10 or so, especially for something that will keep you entertained for quite a while.
Thunderbolt Games
Admittedly, PixelJunk Monsters doesn’t offer too much different from many tower defense titles, but what it lacks in originality it more than makes up in polish. The games’ appeal will suck you into its delightful little world of organized chaos and won’t let go until the whole island is safe. Along the way, as you’re cleansing the world of these misunderstood creatures, you may find yourself feeling bad for the adorable little saps.
The Next Level
That's where the fun comes in, and it involves dead monsters by the dozens. It's endlessly addicting, not to mention highly satisfying, to see your chain of towers pound golems, bugs, and bosses into a thin paste. It may take a few goes to sort out the proper technique, working out the balance between spamming the path with cheaper towers and saving up for the heavy-hitters, but each level has a strategy that can guarantee victory without a single monster reaching home base. Admitted, this will require a large amount of trial and error to discover, but Pixeljunk Monsters is perfectly capable of grabbing hold of your brain tight enough to make the repetition feel like play instead of work. This is the good kind of gaming addiction, and the only drawback is how quickly it makes the hours fly by. Pixeljunk Monsters is the sworn enemy of a good night's rest, but who's got time to sleep when one more round is calling?
Gamer 2.0
While PixelJunk Monsters may not look like the most addictive game in the world, it’ll hit you in the face with its challenging depth and simple gameplay. This is a definite buy for fans of the genre to obsess over the best ways to beat the 20 levels that the game offers. This is just another notch on the PSN’s belt of unique, quality games that you really cannot find on any other console.
The only real criticism we can throw at this game is that it will only appeal to strategy fans and even then, only the most battle hardened and determined. The pacing of PixelJunk Monsters is almost perfect with enough life in the experience to confirm that this is one of the wisest purchases currently available on the PlayStation Store Network.
In the end it all comes down to how you want to play the game. On one hand you've got a fiendishly hard single-player game that taxes the mind as much as the reflexes, and on the other there's a more considered two-player game with a slower pace and more tactical play. Either way PixelJunk Monsters is another fine addition to the PSN line-up.
In fact, for such an impressive game that costs such a small amount of money we could very near award this game a nine. However, due to the slightly trial and error nature that makes an appearance in the latter levels it is enough to knock a whole point off. Nevertheless, don’t let that put you off, as the game is still very much a must buy, and is easily one of the most interesting available on PSN today.
The cool graphics are complemented by the apparant cel-shaded visuals. The little character that runs around the screen building towers kind of looks like a turtle/bug while the villagers are smaller and made me wonder if it wasn't children being defended. Each monster has a unique look to it and the towers are built thanks to a plume of smoke and dust. The whole experince is smooth looking and the framerate never bogs down even as 35 spiders invade the forest. The game just appears fun with its crisp-looking graphics and highly polished appearance. I never thought I would say this, but this game is as much fun as anything I have played on Xbox live.
Game Chronicles
PixelJunk Monsters is a surprisingly addictive and enjoyable game that starts off rather slow, and then quickly sucks the gamer in with its high-intensity tower defense gameplay. While PixelJunk Monsters is not the first game to use this time-honored gameplay genre, it does a wonderful job of translating it to the home console and at an affordable price.
