In the end the game is a fun and compelling massive battle. Playing in a huge ongoing war with real people is a lot of fun, especially as you learn new skills and find a job in the game that you really like. At first I got killed all the time, but now just being smart about combat has allowed me to defend entire bases all by myself against incredible odds. I've become quite accustom to combat, and every game is fun, rewarding and different from the last. PlanetSide earns a perfect 5 GiN Gems for showing the world how a persistent virtual battle is done right.

I should probably start off by telling you that I was extremely skeptical about this game. Since Planetside is the first massively multiplayer online first person shooter (MMOFPS) to hit the market, there is a lot of room for errors. On the other hand, I have been waiting for a game that merged the FPS experience with an MMO feel for years and was quite curious to see if Planetside fit the bill.

Conclusion: PlanetSide kicks ass! I couldn't say more after my first 12 hours in this game and I still can't say much more than that. The huge futuristic battlefields around a facility are so 'huge' it becomes an addiction like none before and gives players a real kick. Although the addiction won't remain because of the repetitiveness of the game, you'll still find yourself wanting to play Planetside in the early morning (which you won't do that much since not much people are online then). If SOE can give us more variety and a nice goal in the next updates and there is still a large playerbase by then then you have a brilliant game! People who are willing (or are able) to pay €50 for Planetside in the shop and €12 every month can't go wrong on this.

PlanetSide est à n’en pas douter un soft original rempli de très bonnes idées, et il est certain que si l’on trouve les bonnes personnes, le fun est au rendez-vous. Mais il est regrettable qu’il puisse se montrer si fastidieux dans le cas contraire et surtout si creux dans son background. Un très bon titre mais qui aurait pu être bien meilleur et surtout proposer une expérience moins aléatoire. Le fun se mérite dans PlanetSide, mieux vaut le savoir. A noter que le jeu requiert un abonnement mensuel.

All in all its very hard not praise the ambitious and overwhelming nature of what PlanetSide achieves in bringing an immersive and realistic persistent conflict to life so completely, and in offering the player so much within it. As I mentioned, it's a slow paced and more tactically-minded game to succeed within - so hyperactive eleven year olds more used to Counter-Strike may find themselves struggling in this unfamiliar and daunting world. That said, once the melange of bugs are fixed and the game begins to develop this is certainly one title I'll be watching with a great deal of interest as one of the most exciting and original new first-person shooters in a long time.

In a way, the basics of PlanetSide are nothing new. Warbirds, a flight sim, has been doing this same kind of thing for five years, using similar technology. But PlanetSide’s innovation is to put it into a readily accessible sci-fi-themed Tribes-style first person shooter. Vehicles, weapons, bases, and factions are all inter-woven into a system of balanced and sophisticated combat, even if it does feel like fighting for fighting’s sake.

Certes, les combats ne sont pas très subtils, l'univers assez simpliste comparé à celui d'un MMORPG, mais l'essentiel est là : les fans de FPS ont de quoi s'amuser pour des mois.

It never fails: strand a bunch of colonists from Earth on a strange new planet, and they’ll be divided into warring factions faster than you can say “space opera.” But while PlanetSide’s background story is admittedly stale, the game’s rich design and amazing number of gameplay features are sure to hook shooter fans eager to try out this “massively multiplayer” thing.

Aller Anfang ist schwer, das gilt auch für PlanetSide. Hat man sich in der riesigen Sci-Fi-Welt erst einmal zurechtgefunden und die Steuerung verinnerlicht, macht das Ganze durchaus Laune. Wenn Sie einen High-End-PC besitzen! Sonst verkommt das Spiel zu einer einzigen Ruckelorgie. Wer auf unkomplizierte und schnelle Action ohne große Einarbeitungszeit steht, ist bei Battlefield & Co. besser und billiger aufgehoben. Enttäuschend übrigens, dass es bei einem reinen Online-Shooter nur den Spielmodus "Basen erobern" gibt.

PlanetSide was duidelijk het resultaat van ambitieuze plannen van enkele zeer getalenteerde ontwerpers. Maar zoals het nu draait berust het meeste van de PlanetSide ervaring op technische stabiliteit en de ijver en het kunnen van de spelers. Op het gebied van stabiliteit is PlanetSide nog niet waar het moet zijn, er zijn nog te veel problemen met 'lag' en verbroken verbindingen die opgelost moeten worden. Op gebied van 'gameplay' zal je merken dat veel afhangt van de kwaliteiten van je teamgenoten. Hoe dan ook, als je denkt dat je het leerproces van het spel kan overwinnen en een team krijgt samengesteld van gelijkdenkende vechtersbazen zal je merken dat PlanetSide een heel unieke en uitdagende spelervaring biedt.

I must reiterate how much fun Planetside can be. Once a squad has been established and a battle plan has been organized, nothing beats flying into the fray on a player-controlled dropship with several fellow combatants. You fan out, the snipers take their posts, the infantry and hackers do their thing and it's all-out war with no-holds barred fun. She's got a steep hill to climb, but Planetside will give back a lot of very unique enjoyment. It's not for everyone, but those who are interested and have the funds will undoubtedly be pleased with all the game has to offer.

Planetside ist Tribes 2 in Grau. Die Gefechte langweilen schnell, weil keiner richtig weiß, was er zu tun hat. Das Spiel verwirrt Einsteiger mit zu vielen Ausrüstungskombinationen, statt klar verteilte Aufgaben zu stellen. Die Ansätze mit drei Rassen, vielen Vehikeln und Waffen gefallen mir, doch spielerisch haben Tribes 2 und vor allem Battlefield 1942 die Nase vorn. Die bieten schnelle Action und taktischen Tiefgang, sind aber viel zugänglicher. Und für Rollenspieler ist Planetside gleich dreimal nichts, die schauen sich besser Anarchy Online an.
