Description
Chaos Theory is the third episode of the five-part episodic adventure series Life Is Strange. It is DLC for the first episode Life Is Strange: Episode 1 - Chrysalis along with the second one and it is only available separately for the PlayStation versions. For the other platforms it can be acquired through Life Is Strange: Season Pass or Life Is Strange: Complete Season. The episode starts with a short recap of the previous events, customized for each player based on the decisions they took in the previous ones. The episode starts at night following an important event from the previous episode. Chloe asks Max to sneak out of her dorm so they can break into the principal's office and find some more information. They also go for a swim in the school's pool. Those are the two main new locations in this episode. It continues at Chloe's home, revealing more of the tensions in the family. They further investigate whether David, Frank or Nathan is involved with Rachel's disappearance and trick Frank to get his keys and sneak into his RV.
The strange phenomena continue. Following the snow and the sun eclipse, in this episode various animals suddenly die, mainly birds. The gameplay is identical to the previous episodes with the time rewinding mechanic, important and minor choices and the way she can interact with people. There is a new page with locations in her book, optional photos to take and her diary is furthered based on the decisions.
Various looming love interests are clarified and Max discovers a new strength in her powers. The final part of the episode is an extensive flashback through time travel five years back in time, when she was thirteen. Through her actions, Max is able to experience the full butterfly effect / chaos theory. It ends showing how all characters have changed in the present, through a small action in the past. This episode has some puzzles that are more difficult than the previous episodes and there is a new focusing technique, used to trigger time travel far down the past.
