The surfing game has proven to be a difficult undertaking for developers. The handful of recent surfing games have all been average at best, and none have been able to capture the essence of the sport and manage to make a fun, playable game out of it. Enter Championship Surfer. While far from perfect, it is easily the best surfing game on the market, but more importantly, it's also a fun game.

After years of nary a sign of surfing games, the year 2000 brings what seems like an overabundance. Championship Surfer has all the necessities – a selection of real surfers, different boards, and variable surfing conditions. I must admit that I jumped at the chance to play this and I was rewarded – but only slightly. The game looks pretty good, but it's hampered by a weak camera system. The adjustable camera just doesn't have a great view of the action. Likewise, the control is a little too sensitive to my liking. It does a good job of providing you with some authentic surf stuff, but fails to deliver.

Gar nicht schlecht... Die Steuerung ist gut zu handhaben und auch das Verhalten der Wellen kommt gut rüber. Man braucht aber schon einiges an Übung, um ein paar Tricks auf die Beine zu stellen. Neben den unterschiedlichen originalen Surfern, kann man sich mit der Zeit auch in verschiedene Terrains begeben. Positiv ist auch, daß man im Freeride sich die Windstärke, Wellenstärke und eben allgemeines Wetter einstellen kann. Die Grafik ist zwar nicht spektakulär... kann sich aber schon sehen lassen. Das Gameplay ist hier eben recht überzeugend. Fazit: Für Wasserratten schon mal zu empfehlen!

What’s up with all the surfing games lately? This one is infinitely better than Surfing H30 and a little worse than Surf Riders. Myself, I’d wait for Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer.

Championship Surfer est un jeu simple et efficace qui saura satisfaire les fanas de ce sport nautique chargé d'adrénaline. Jouabilité instinctive, facilité d'évolution, sensation de glisse et surtout figures aériennes rendent le jeu très fun mais le nombre limité de tricks et la gestion des caméras ne lui permettent pas d'atteindre des sommets. Un titre à conseiller donc aux amateurs de surf et de glisse, car les autres le trouveront probablement un peu juste.
