So there you have it…now the ball is firmly in your court. Are you interested in playing what is perhaps the very best 3-D fighting game available today for the Playstation? Well if the answer if yes, then I suggest you haul your ass down to the store and pick up Ehrgeiz right now. The graphics will totally blow you away, the sound effects and music are top notch and the gameplay is really second to none. While the game does have a few minor flaws, it is easily right up there with the best the Playstation has to offer in fighting games…and that company includes Tekken 3…'nuff said.
Many call this game a "Final Fantasy Fighter" which what it sort of is, because the game features 5 FF7 characters, including Sephiroth, Cloud, Tifa, Yuffie (secret) , Vincent (secret). The game features over 15 characters, multi level stages, mini games, an RPG mode a'la Tobal no.1 but a lot better.

While none of the various game types in EHRGEIZ are groundbreaking, they're all included at no extra cost. This is a great title for those of you looking for a multi-layered gaming experience . Fans of Square games will enjoy the familiar characters, while the rest of you will dig the variety.
Game Chronicles (Jun 29, 1999)
Overall EHRGEIZ is a challenging game which will offer you hundreds of hours of intense gameplay. I've already logged more than 70 hours on this game and have only finished the Ring Mode with the 11 main characters, completed 12 dungeon levels and set a few records in each of the mini-games. There is still plenty more to see and do not to mention the dozens of hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered and unlocked. Just completing the tasks to unlock the third set of costumes will easily take me another 20 hours, so I'd better get back to work.

IGN (May, 1999)
OK, Ehrgeiz is a disappointment. I would have rather been able to buy Tobal 2 without the excessive import price tag, than buy Ehrgeiz. But, while not the best fighter on the block, Ehrgeiz has a number of good things going for it. After players zip through the piece-of-cake single-player fighting mode, the game has what it takes to content in the overall entertainment category. Two-player fighting is good enough fun, and will take up a lot of your time, but the simple little Mini Games are good enough to be games on their own.
Freak (Feb, 1999)
GamePro (US) (Jun, 1999)
In general, Ehrgeiz is fun, fast, and middle-of-the-road exciting. Lots of grabs, counters, and mini-combos dominate a basic fighting structure, while the characters range from weird - like Jo the Wolf Girl - to wild; plus three characters from Final Fantasy VII have made their way into the game. Ehrgeiz's other elements - standard music and sound effects, and mildly impressive graphics - never really soar, while the poor controls set Ehrgeiz apart. Had Square kept the game in 2D, it might've had a better chance.

Power Unlimited (Mar, 2000)
Ehrgeiz’s Arcade Mode is easily a four star title in and of itself, and with a little more work it could have been even better. As it is, though, the RPG Mode and mini-games do little more than distract the player from the true experience, and neither of them are strong enough to stand on their own. In the end, the whole product comes out feeling sloppy and unfinished. Sadly, it seems that the developers bit off a little more than they could chew with this one, and it falls to us to bear the brunt of that mistake.
GameSpot (May 30, 1999)
If you're looking for eye candy, Ehrgeiz will give you plenty of cavities.
