Yet again we\'ve got another Formula 1 game that fails to hit the mark. It\'s a great shame, since F1 2001 for the PSOne seems to almost have been written as an afterthought to the PS2 version. I did try very hard not to compare the two in this review, having played both, yet the PS2 version is a far better and altogether more complete simulation. The Arcade mode may be different to other F1 games, but who is going to buy it just for this alone? The whole game appears to be easier and \'tuned down\' than previous versions. I suspect that it may have been aimed at a slightly younger market than previous games.
I also found the view options infuriating, but this is just a personal thing and the outside car views are probably adequate for most people. In my view F1 \'97 is still the best and most realistic Formula 1 game on the PSOne, so don\'t get rid of your copy just yet.
PS peeps should stick with the established 32-bit favourites, which achieve the same steadfast update. Arcade mode is more forgiving, but F1 buyers want the ‘thrill’ of real physics, not a poor man’s Ridge Racer. Less phased by polygon-pushing, the PS2 incarnation of F1 2001 is infinitely more rewarding to play.
