If you're questing for imaginative, nonstop 2D action, you'll cheer Herc's Adventures. While it probably won't achieve god-like status, it's a solid quest that mortals will enjoy.

Herc's Adventures is a pretty decent game. In spite of some of the quirks of the two-player mode, I had fun playing with a partner and helping one another along the way. This game draws on so many other successful titles that you feel comfortable playing as soon as you pick up the controller. It is also challenging enough that it should keep your attention for a while. You could do a lot worse.

So how does it compare to that Disney game? Pretty favorably. With its subversive humor and pun-filled setting, the game is surprisingly funny (in a fashion similar to LucasArts' Sam and Max Hit The Road). The graphics look quite good, and in some ways have a more refined look than Virgin/Disney's version. All in all, it is very impressive for a 2D game. When it comes down to it, Herc's Adventures offers much more depth than the Virgin/Disney title, which is essentially an arcade game. The graphics, gameplay, and humor make a unique mix that results in a truly fresh title unlike most of the other games on the market today.

With bad directions, infuriating pathways, and adventures that take way, way longer to get through than you thought (many of them have you get to a remote area to accomplish your goal, only to have to go through three or four more events just to get back and deliver the item you came for), the game's design is so painful that it sacrifices fun for challenge. Harp on Ghoul Patrol all you want, but it still had the foresight to be fun instead of needlessly challenging.

Although Herc's Adventures isn't a super-death-polygon fighter or a high-speed racing sim, all in all, it doesn't look that bad and offers some exciting gameplay. A small, but fine, production from LucasArts.
