After this button-mashing festival, your fingers are gonna be totally buff. Even if you're not the type to keep your body perfectly tuned for peak performance, you can still experience the thrill of international competition with Konami's tribute to summertime sports.

After gaining fame and glory from the comfort of your couch, try not to get too disappointed when nobody tries to put your face on a cereal box.

In the dark ages of video games (1987), Konami brought a new genre of sports games to the world with Track & Field for the NES. In that 8-bit wonder, success depended on how fast you could tap the A and B Buttons. The faster you mashed, the faster your athlete ran. This is the same basic concept behind the gameplay in International Track and Field 2000.

You'll need speed and endurance to excel in events like the 100m Dash and 100m Freestyle, but competitions like the Horizontal Bar and Hammer Throw require precise timing. This type of technical gaming is definitely a specialized genre, but Konami has pulled it off with enough style to attract some new recruits.

Track and Field 2K features a nice cross section of events, which present a wide variety of challenges. Despite the name, this Pak frequently leaves the track for indoor competitions like swimming and gymnastics. You can either compete in an eight-event Championship Mode, or try to better your best scores in the Trial Mode. In all, Konami has captured 14 competitions.

With hi-res graphics supplied by the N64 Expansion Pak, Track and Field 2K is a visual extravaganza of bulging muscles and authentic animation. Excluding the blurred effect Konami chose to use in its instant replays, the realistic graphics in this game are superb.

It may seem easy to label this Pak as a boring button-masher, but in reality it takes a great deal of skill and precision to score well in most of the events. Since the control set-up is different for almost every challenge, there is a lot of variety in the gameplay.

Hi scores and world records can be saved to a Controller Pak, which was all the inspiration we needed to keep trying to shave seconds and improve scores over and over again.

By far, the best aspect of International Track and Field 2000 is its highly competitive four-player mode. The thrill of victory feels good, but watching your friends writhe around in the agony of defeat feels great!
