Kartia: The Word of Fate is a new Strategy/Simulation RPG from Atlus. A collaboration between Cozi Okada, the creator of Persona, Soul Hackers, and the Megami Tensei series in Japan, and Amano Yoshitaka, the character designer most noted for his work on Final Fantasy VI (III in the United States). The combination of wonderful character designs and fun yet complex gameplay make for a unique strategy game with a style all its own.

With its two separate quests comprising a thirty-five hour story, Kartia is worth almost any price. I have a few problems with its setup and thus, only gave it an eight out of ten score. Of course, they are not game-ruining issues, and Kartia is definitely worth the used price it is at now. I recommend this to any and all SRPG fans.

Super Play

Originally titled Rebus (in Japan), the newly renamed Kartia refers to the card-based magic the game centers on. Similar in style to Tactics Ogre, Kartia is mainly a strategy game with a unique twist. Instead of concentrating so heavily on the tactical aspects of the game, Kartia focuses on creating phantoms, which are creatures that enter into battle with you. You can also use all sorts of elemental magic based on Kartia as well. During the game you will have the chance to create weapons and new kinds of phantoms. The variety found in Kartia is refreshing and the innovations abound.

All in all, Kartia is a very unique title which is easily overlooked. However, between the extremely unique mechanics, and excellent plot, it's well worth tracking down. Even after finishing the game, there are a fair number of two player scenarios to keep players entertained long after.
