I would have to say that if you enjoy racing games that you will not be disappointed with this one. It is very well done. The overall graphics, gameplay and realism are as good as any racing game I have seen for the Sony PlayStation, and it’s a lot of fun too. Electronic Arts has also done a great job of adding plenty of different racetracks and options to keep the game fresh for quite a long time.

The forth in the NFS series (we won't count that NFS Rally game) may possibly be the best as it takes the prior three and improves or adds to them in almost every possible way. The game is action packed and has a ton of options and driving modes for your enjoyment. The graphics are absolutely stunning, but lose a few points for a quirky frame rate and lack of spectacular lighting, but damn they sure are perdy! The sound effects are the best in the series and the music is nice driving rock that fits in perfectly with the game. Basically, unless you are a corpse it will definitely get your blood pumping and your motor running. Chalk up another one for the NFS series. If you like driving games, you owe it to yourself to at least check this one out!

Need For Speed: High Stakes is a riot of a racer. In my books, it rates as the best racer on the PlayStation. For diehard simulation fans, Gran Turismo is still the king. High Stakes has many sim elements but it’s definitely a mesh with arcade. However, as many may know, Gran Turismo ain’t much in the way of thrilling action or multiplayer (It’s not extremely fast and there are no real crashes or damage). In the end, High Stakes is just more fun.

In the end, High Stakes is a well-rounded package. It's got tremendous competitive spirit, and enough changes (10 international tracks) and alterations to earn hard-core gamers' respect. It's still not the top tog out there, but with that especially killer Porsche license (that no one else seems to have), drivers who dig on speeding around in a 911 at 150-plus miles per hour are going to simply wet themselves.

Mega Fun

All in all, Need for Speed: High Stakes is a great driving game, but a few of the game's smaller problems keep it from being all that it could be. The inability to call for backup in two-player hot pursuit games is completely unforgivable and keeps the gameplay score from being even higher. The framerate problems and generally pixelated appearance of the game simply show the age of the PlayStation. I, for one, hope the next NFS game appears on a system that can handle a complete graphical overhaul.

Prima racegame, hoor.

There are a lot of racing titles out for the PlayStation right now, and a good many of them aren’t worth the CDs they’re burned onto. Every once in a while, however, one will come along that proves to racing fans everywhere that improvements are still being made and that the bar is constantly being raised. Need For Speed: High Stakes is one of those games, and even if you’re not usually a fan of these types of games, I would strongly recommend you give it a look. You certainly won’t be disappointed.

Minor problems aside, High Stakes is an excellent racer for the virtual jet-setter. The wealth of cars, tracks and game modes deliver an exciting and re-playable driving experience.
