ELECTRONIC ARTS SHIPS ORIGINAL ARCADE HOCKEY GAME NHL ROCK THE RINK DROPS THE PUCK FOR AN ALL OUT AGGRESSIVE HOCKEY EXPERIENCEREDWOOD CITY, Calif. - March 21, 2000 - Prepare for high-flying aerial stunt moves and goal scoring with in-your-face, -nose and -body action where players pounce onto the ice with a bone-jarring, gravity-defying original arcade hockey game. NHL Rock the Rink for the PlayStation is an outdoor hockey game hybridized with wrestling flair and ferociousness, where the puck girl keeps the troublemakers in line, the NHL heavyweights take center stage and the King of the Rink reigns supreme. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) redefines NHL hockey with a fast-paced, rule-deficient hard-hitting hockey game that presents the challenge of 3-on-3 hockey with the non-stop action.
NHL Rock the Rink is a far cry from mainstream, traditional hockey. In this interactive world, the rules are thrown aside and cyber ruffians rule the ice. Players begin the game as one of nine creative fantasy hockey teams with names and appropriate characteristics such as the Psycho Delics, Demons, Demolition and Gangsters. Play as one of these teams on its unique home-ice venue, where players earn the right to play beefed-up, street-tough NHL teams. NHL and NHLPA licenses allow players to find all their favorite NHL teams and select from a generous offering of forceful NHL defensemen and gritty goal scorers.
"We felt there was a basic element of fun that could be dialed up in an arcade hockey game that has not been showcased before, so we set our imaginations loose and came up with NHL Rock the Rink," said NHL Rock the Rink Producer, Kevin Wilkinson. "The elimination of rules gave us an amazing opportunity to restructure how to control the flow of the game, while creating the illusion of total bedlam. Putting a 'shot clock' on puck possession or setting the goal of the game as 'first to ten' makes players rethink their strategies, or abandon strategy altogether with the fun factor of head-to-head confrontation in this game."
There are three varying modes to crash the boards and level opponents in NHL Rock the Rink: Arcade, NHL Challenge and King of the Rink. Arcade mode is a single game, pick-up-and-play-action against the machine or, even better, a friend who's primed for the action. NHL Challenge is single player action where a player takes a team through three Championship Challenge levels, each consisting of three tournaments that are populated by NHL teams. With each tournament victory players earn key equipment upgrades, such as faster skates, or powerful sticks for a bigger, harder shot. The third option is King of the Rink mode, which represents the ultimate challenge between players. Up to eight players join this double elimination tournament in which the winner stays, and the loser gives way to the next challenger. The last team left goes on to play a bonus team that can humble even the toughest opponent if one isn't at the top of his game. Beat this final team to unlock King of the Rink special fighting and aggressive powers.
NHL Rock the Rink takes extreme hockey out of the arena, away from corporate suites and bandwagon fans and sets it on the pond or in an unheated warehouse where the true hard-core hockey player lurks. Players are rewarded for winning games not just with traditional bragging rights, but also with super charged power-ups, and additional ice surfaces. Throughout the game the user also can unlock hidden teams and unique rewards that include playing with a tennis ball, mini players, mini nets and rubber boards. "These special upgrades make this truly the arcade experience for video game fans looking for a fresh and fun new hockey experience," said Wilkinson.
NHL Rock the Rink has an ESRB rating of "E" (Everyone) with descriptors of Animated Violence and Comic Mischief. Consumers may purchase the game directly at the EA Store(http://eastore.ea.com) or by calling EA Direct Sales at 1.800.245.4525. The game has a suggested retail price of $39.95.
