A great game in it's own rights and an unusual sequel when compared to the original. Lot's of good stuff was added that was not in the original, but lot's of good stuff that was in the original was taken out of RC2...go figure. I was surprised to find that only four vehicles compete in a race and the wonderful 4-player split screen is history. The good news is that there is now a track editor to create your own courses, much improved graphics and vehicle physics and a vehicle customize menu to set each machine up the way you want it. It's clearly a game that will get a lot of playing time on my PSX this holiday season, but it could have been so much more. Oh well, there's always RC3....

Rally Cross 2 is very impressive improvement over the original, which wasn't a bad game in the first place. The sequel's faster, smoother and more importantly, more fun. In particular, I like the track designs. You can race them in a fairly straightforward fashion, but you can really spend some time learning the tracks' nuances to improve your times. Nice, clean graphics and controls only add to this already solid package.
I have to say that this is the best game on the market for PSX that is devoted strictly to off-road rally racing. Be warned, because the only reason it is the best is because the rest of the games are all pretty crappy. This game definitely has its bright spots and you should get some enjoyment out of it, but I think the long-term playability may suffer. If you enjoy creating your own tracks, you may get a few more miles of enjoyment out of it, but I still suggest a rental first.
While Rally Cross 2 seems to have all the ingredients needed to be a worthy successor to the original classic, the game on the whole seemed to have lost some of the novelty captured by the first Rally Cross. Veterans of Rally Cross may come away with mixed feelings about the modified physics system as it makes Rally Cross 2 a lot easier to master. But the longer and more difficult tracks will present a different challenge to newcomers and veterans alike. No matter what, the Rally Cross series will always stand as two of the most playable and unique off-road racers the PlayStation has ever seen.
The Video Game Critic
Rally Cross 2 is a quality racer, but when you compare it pound-for-pound to the original, it's basically a wash.
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Rally Cross 2 is a great racing game. The graphics are immersive and speedy, the control spot-on and the sound effects excellent. The sense of chaotic racing found in the Switchyard course is second to none, but some of the other courses become bland with repetition. Players looking for a true racer will appreciate the detail and length of the settings and tracks, while more casual gamers should definitely give it a try to see how 989 Studios has raised the bar for any company that produces a racer. The slew of locked courses and cars will keep players coming back for more, if only to uncover the number of secrets 989 Studios has slipped into the game.
Playstation Pro (UK Magazine)
The vehicles are varied and they do differ slightly in the areas of speed and handling. Providing only three to begin with is the work of a tight-arsed development team and doubly shameful is the fact that they all sound like wasps on neat, but there are more to unlock and it does provide an incentive to improve. Not so the poorly designed tracks, where it’s apparently okay to stick a right-angle turn directly after a jump and cruelly frustrate the poor bastard who believes that it is possible to make the bend without jamming his hot rod into the barrier at anything but a crawling pace. You can get away with this kind of behaviour in Gran Turismo
because it’s supposed to be realistic, but Rally
Cross 2 is a bouncy arcade racer and that kind of thing won’t do.
