Fun Generation (May, 1998)
You knew this was going to be awesome and it most certainly is. You won't get much better on your PlayStation for a very long time.
Arcade (Nov 17, 1998)
The two-character feature is a touch gimmicky, and the puzzles are similar to the first incarnation, but RE2 is much better than the original in all other respects. The improvement in script and acting, and the wildly increased zombie count, will scare your skin off.
GamePro (US) (Mar, 1998)
Resident Evil 2 is a sequel that not only meets expectations, but easily surpasses them with ease. Once you begin this game, you're hooked. Once you finish, you'll drool for more. Resident Evil 2 is frighteningly good.
Next Generation (Mar, 1998)
But even with these and other countless improvements and new features packed into Resident Evil 2, Capcom hasn't neglected the real reason that gamers were drawn into the original game, which is the need to be entertained and the thrill of being scared out of our wits. With a spooky yet stellar soundtrack including the most precise and realistic sound effects ever heard in any game, RE2 ensures numerous nervous nights spent with all the lights on and a controller in hand. Kudos to Capcom for undoubtedly making the must-own title of the year.
SuperGamePower (Mar, 1998)
RE 2 bate todas as expectativas.
PSM (Mar, 1998)
Capcom has always been a company known for its quality products, and RE2 is a testament to that reputation. It manages to reinvent all the puzzle elements that made the first game special, combining them with better puzzles, more monsters, and cooler weapons. RE2 is a landmark achievement, and it will long be remembered as one of the PlayStation's finest games. Congratulations Capcom, you have made a lot of people very happy. Again.
The Video Game Critic (Oct 25, 2004)
Despite being a bigger adventure, the gameplay follows the same winning formula as the original, with thoughtful puzzles and intense monster encounters. As a terrific sequel that remains true to the original formula, many fans consider Resident Evil 2 to be the pinnacle of the series.
Just Adventure (Jul 25, 2002)
In short, Capcom has written the book on how to make a sequel once again. RE2 is an absolute winner and represents the pinnacle of the survival horror genre on Sony's 32-bit machine and the PC. Games like RE2 come along at most once a year. When they do, adventure and horror fans alike owe it to themselves to be in line. The horror has just begun.

Ultra Game Players (Jan, 1998)
Capcom certainly had a lot to live up to with this game, especially with the original Resident Evil still being one of the top titles available for the PlayStation. Much to my delight, it has managed not only to deliver a game that equals its predecessor in terms of sheer thrills (and chills), but one that that exceeded my wildest expectations. Where the first game proved thoroughly engrossing, Resident Evil 2 drew me in entirely. Capcom has managed to create an atmosphere so convincing that I caught myself teetering on the edge of reality many times throughout, feeling that I truly was being stalked by zombies. It takes a lot to pull me that far into a gaming experience; RE2 did it with ease. To put things simply, it really is like a superbly-done horror film that you're controlling — something that many a horror fan has longed to do.
Ännu bättre och ännu läskigare än föregångaren.
Gaming Target (May 08, 2002)
Besides that, nothing really has changed from the now traditional RE style of gameplay. The puzzles are a dominant factor, and while some are extremely obscure/weird, Capcom covers their tracks by introducing you to the police chief (and wannabe mayor), which you learn is a very…interesting man with a few…strange hobbies, making the weird puzzles fit in because of the sick-minded chief. For RE veterans, the puzzles aren’t really earth shattering, but I get an impression that’s the point – to keep the story moving. What’s neat is both characters will have different puzzles to solve at given times – each of their scenario’s are different in minor ways, like the original RE was. A few of the puzzles are frustrating trial-and error sorts, but usually they don’t give you too much trouble as long as you know how to think.

Hail to the king baby!
PGNx Media (Oct 05, 2002)
The overall gameplay structure is enriched by a second quest that is linked to the original, and it explains everything that the first quest didn't. The second quest might be a little tougher at first, but that changes quickly enough and you are on the same wavelength as before. The final boss is too easy, but that doesn't mean you're gonna get it that easily. The other bosses in the game are at least a little tougher and should be able to keep you ready and alert. It is good to be scare.
Video Games (Apr, 1998)

A lot of really wonderful things can and will be said by reviewers about Resident Evil 2. It's a good sequel, it's a superb game in it's own right and it will consume your life for hours, but it's not a quantum leap forward in the evolution of the game or the genre. With fourth wave titles like Metal Gear Solid on the way, Resident Evil 2 just isn't quite the ground breaker that the first one was. That said, it's going to be the game that's spinning in my PlayStation for the next few weeks.
Game Revolution (Jan, 1998)
Now, I hear what you're saying: "This Zombie is chewing on my foot, it deserves to be shot." But that's just the response that society has conditioned you to have. So even though this is a great game with good graphics, terrific sound, riveting action, and puzzles that will keep you entertained for hours... As a favor to our Zombie friends, do not buy this game.
Just Games Retro (Oct 31, 2014)
In closing, my major complaints aren’t necessarily RE2’s fault – it barely tries to evolve past the original, and it plants the seeds for the series’ entire storyline to become the hot mess it has become today. Beyond that, it’s aces for fans of the first. Forgive the dopey plot and you’ll find survival horror at its best, with smartly expanded reasons to check out both characters/sides of the story. Just be sure to allot some time to check paintings for hidden keys, and don’t expect to see the marquee city beyond your initial scramble through it.
Edge (Feb 24, 1998)
The biggest compliment that can be paid to Resident Evil 2 (and its precursor) is that, in the two years that have passed since the original’s release, not a single title has even come close to matching it. And this will probably hold true for its absorbing, frightening and sumptuously detailed follow-up – a sequel that clearly points the way towards a future where games and films aren’t mutually exclusive entities. So it’s official, the ‘Interactive movie’ is no longer something to snigger about…
Level (Nov, 2010)
So it turns out I’ve probably told you everything you already know. It’s hard NOT to like a game like this, one that is obviously a labor of love to a great team of talented designers. It’s certain to be one of the "ten best" of the year. Playstation owners "must have" Resident Evil 2, by gosh.
Mega Fun (Apr, 1998)
GameSpot (Jan 28, 1998)
But in the end, Resident Evil 2 is one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. With its unique camera angles, storyline, graphics, sound effects, and music, Resident Evil 2 seems more like a product out of Hollywood than the video game industry. Resident Evil 2 surpasses its predecessor in nearly every aspect of gameplay, and in short, Capcom has outdone itself.
In the end of the day, you wouldn't play RE2 for the graphics in today's world, but a game can't be judged solely on presentation or on modern-day standards. Of course, for 1998, RE2 was a huge improvement over the original and was a first-class fright-fest. Now that new PS One's are nearly extinct, RE2 can be picked up for an extremely reasonable price; you have absolutely no excuse for not picking this up.
