After playing for a couple hours, you begin to lose touch with the real world and start to slip away into Idznak. This is a testament to the profound impact the game has on your perception of reality. Translation: You will bust out crazy mad after prolonged exposure. Extremely well-crafted Claymation graphics combined with an at times hilarious if not perverse soundtrack make Skullmonkeys something everyone should try. Come on, inhale, it won't kill ya. Really.

If you enjoy your platform games in the older side scrolling style then check this out. It is highly addictive and raises more than a few smiles. The only down side is that as the game wears on the difficulty moves up a few more notches until it becomes excruciatingly hard. Against this you will always find a way to get by and with unlimited continues you do not have to restart all the way back at the beginning.

If you are looking for ground-breaking gameplay, you might as well look elsewhere. But if you like a good old school side scrolling adventure, you should be quite pleased. The beautiful graphics, offbeat humor and long levels will keep you exploring for hours. I would have liked to see more variety with the enemies but that was really the only major complaint I had. All in all, this game is a good time.

Should I Go Back and Play It? If you can track it down -- Skullmonkeys isn't exactly a low-hanging fruit -- you should absolutely play it. The game's art and music will slap you silly; the potency of Skullmonkey's art direction cannot be understated. In an argument about games being art, Skullmonkeys deserves mention. As an example of the platformer genre, Skullmonkeys follows instead of leading, but to be fair, the footsteps of giants were still filling up with polygonal wannabes. Play it instead as a sum of its parts, appreciating all the great things it accomplishes in the field of artistry, while enjoying one of the last functional remnants of a then-dying genre.

SkullMonkeys holds a lot of promise, but the designers' attempts to make the game challenging (which is the only possible explanation for some of the design quirks) will only make you feel as if they truly don't want you to continue playing. And after a while, you'll be more than happy to oblige.
