In fact, Soul’s story line has it all: good versus evil, war versus peace, revenge, family loyalty, friendships lost and found it even has zombies! Yes, creepy creatures and the undead run amok, resulting in more slicing and dicing than at a sushi chefs convention. In one hand-cramping sequence, you fight an entire town of blade-swinging zombies! How many? One hundred? Two hundred? Keep counting.

At any rate, Soul of the Samurai is a great action game. It's just, after having a game like Metal Gear Solid come out of your company, I guess your standards get raised a bit. Besides, I have to remind myself that this isn't tactical espionage, it's sword swinging, and if you like that kind of stuff, great, you'll dig this game completely. But honestly, I got a bored with it rather quickly -- I would've named the game Double Dragon 2000.

The positive side of SOTS is the story, which is told through the use of in-game engine sequences and subtitles. Instead of being broken up into different levels, the game is set in chapters. While the tale is fairly wooden and telegraphs its punches a mile away at times, the delivery is unique and often actually realizes the gaming cliché of "making you feel like part of the story." If there were less filler battles and a better camera set-up, SOTS would be much more fun to play. In the end, the game is more of a curiosity rental than a title you'd want to pick up for keeps.

Konami really had a great idea here. It's a shame the entire thing is lost on shoddy gameplay. Voice acting would've been appreciated as would some better control. The game turns out to be an extreme disappointment in nearly every department. It's just a shame the game was wasted.
