D'un fun monstrueux auquel aucun jeu de baston sur PC ne pourrait prétendre, SF Ex Plus Alpha constitue un achat judicieux pour tout chômeur pas encore tout à fait désargenté.
Street Fighter EX Plus might not be the best Street Fighter ever, but it's high enough on the list to become a worldwide fight-night favorite. Next time you have a beef with one of your friends, don't take it to a mediator - take it to the streets.
The wait is over...Capcom has finally given the long awaited facelift to Street Fighter. While the game certainly looks different with its newly modeled polygon characters, the moves have translated miraculously well. I had really started getting tired of the old Street Fighter "look" and although this game plays pretty much the same, it just breathed a whole new breath of life into the series for me. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for a pretty face...jeez I must be shallow. Anyway, this is surely a step in a positive and exciting new direction for the Street Fighter series. You have loads of characters and play modes to select from and that good old Street Fighter "feel" is still there. Looks like a winner to me!
The only complaint I have with the gameplay is the collision detection. It seems when you're in really close to an opponent, you tend to 'miss' them. It doesn't happen all the time, but when you're trying to execute a cool combo and it goes wrong because of this, you just want to throw your controller in frustration. But other than that, this game rocks. All in all, this is one of the best Street Fighters I've ever played, and I think it's a good switch. It's still a 2D fighter, but it looks a whole lot better.
Taken as a whole, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha is a fun game with great gameplay, better than average aesthetics, and a large number of characters. As we've seen many (perhaps too many) times before, Capcom has a tendency to use its "good" Street Fighter games as a foundation to build truly great ones. How long will SF EX Plus Alpha be worth playing? Your answer will depend upon how tired you are of traditional SF gameplay.
Despite its polygon splendour, Street Fighter EX received a laconic arcade reception from a public grown accustomed to seeing Capcom's fighter in all of its 2D glory - the perfect combination of great sprites, super-fluid animation and boundless playability. Arcade beat 'em up fans were not drawn away from their Tekkens and Virtua Fighters which added the (limited) benefit of 3D gameplay to accomplished visuals. However, Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha is more than merely a straight conversion of its coin-op parent, and features a multitude of console-only extras. Beyond the practice level, players can tackle arcade, time attack, and survival options, while versus and team battle modes are offered for multiplayer matches.
Lens of Truth
With Street Fighter EX plus alpha, Capcom attempted to bring their most beloved series into 3-D, and almost got it right. Only when it’s compared to its 2-D brothers (or 3-D heavyweights Tekken 1 and 2) does the gameplay feel mediocre. This PS1 version features 6 game modes, CG animated endings, and some of the best music in the series to date. If you’re a fan of Street Fighter, grabbing EX Plus Alpha is an easy choice – not only because it’s a Street Fighter game but mainly just to see how far these polygons have come.
The Video Game Critic
EX is playable but doesn't have that crisp, responsive feel of a real Street Fighter game. The music covers a wide range, but some of the tunes seem jazzy and inappropriate. Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha is the unholy bastard child of Tekken and Street Fighter. It may have been an interesting novelty item in the late 90's, but now it's just bad. My friend Chris claims this game is not worthy of the Street Fighter name, and I think he's right.
