The 3D acceleration certainly speeds up the gameplay and you can actually play a full round of golf in under 20 minutes. I must admit that although Tiger Woods Golf is a fine effort from EA Sports I prefer Gremlin's Actua Golf 3. It is much more of a simulation of the sport rather than this arcade transition.

Since I really enjoy playing golf games, I did like this game. The more I played it and learned to compensate for some of the quirks, the more I liked it, even though I was never able to compensate completely for all the quirks. I think the mix of arcade and simulation kept things somewhat fresh, and if you are looking for the PGA Tour license, you really don't have anywhere else to turn. I still think Hot Shots Golf is a much more enjoyable game, but if you are looking for a new golf experience, check Tiger Woods 99 out.

Although arriving on the scene later than some other golf games, Tiger Woods 99 is still as good a golf sim as you're likely to find. Although a little more arcade-y than some might like, for the majority of gamers out there, this'll do just fine.

Video golf is the guilty pleasure of the videogame industry. No one wants to admit they play them, but many, many do. Including me. I love Hot Shot Golf, and was looking forward to a more realistic game of golf. And while Tiger Woods is certainly not a game without flaws, it's good nonetheless.

The promise of an analog swing system, a truly revolutionary feature for a console golf game, is completely wasted by not being able to see the golfer pull back as you do (like in Sierra's Front Page Sports Golf for the PC). You therefore lose the feeling you're "at one" with the golfer: you first flick the stick back and forth quickly and then watch your player carry it out a few seconds later. This removes you from the action. While Tiger is far from a horrible day on the links, Hot Shots Golf still remains the best all-around PlayStation golf title as of 1998--big heads and all!

In retrospect, it should have been renamed Tiger Wouldn’t ’99, because in light of EA’s recent good form, Tiger Woods ’99 falls well below what we’ve come to expect. Avoid at all costs, unless you’re gullible enough to believe the hype.
