Press Release:

ACTIVISION AND McAFEE TEAM UP ON JOINT RETAIL AND ONLINE PROMOTION THAT OFFERS GAME PLAYERS UNPRECEDENTED COMPUTER VIRUS PROTECTION

Activision's New CD-ROM Game Time Commando Allows Players to Battle Fictional Computer Virus While Safeguarding Their Own Machines With McAfee's WebScan

Los Angeles, CA, August 20, 1996 -- Signaling a major step toward expanding consumer awareness of CD-ROM games in the retail channel, Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) has partnered with McAfee (Nasdaq: MCAF), a leader in network security and management, on a unique promotion that pairs a computer game with an anti-virus application. The two companies have joined together on a series of retail and online-based promotions tied to the launch of Activision's upcoming CD-ROM game Time Commando, an action adventure in which players travel to nine historical worlds as they battle a super computer virus that threatens national security.

Purchasers of Time Commando will receive a free built-in version of McAfee's WebScan, an anti-virus solution for Web browsers and Internet email. McAfee's WebScan provides users with a complete and secure Internet environment, integrating a Web browser and e-mail application including specially adapted virus-detection technology. WebScan is valued at US $40.00.

Purchasers of McAfee's VirusScan, WebScan and Commuter utilities will receive a Special Edition of Time Commando featured on each of the three products. Additionally, Activision and McAfee will jointly sponsor an online promotion in which the grand prize winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to one of eight different destinations that correspond to the eight worlds represented in Time Commando.

"Our partnership with McAfee underscores Activision's continued commitment to seek out innovative methods to build consumer awareness for PC products at the retail level," says Bobby Kotick, Chairman and CEO of Activision, Inc. "These promotions provide both Activision and McAfee with unique vehicles to offer consumers thrilling entertainment and critical applications that will protect and enhance the integrity of their computer systems."

To highlight the retail offering, Activision and McAfee intend to cross- promote their partnership on more than 60,000 boxes of Time Commando and 150,000 boxes of McAfee's VirusScan, Commuter and WebScan products. Shelf talkers featuring the products are expected to be displayed in more than 3,500 store fronts. Additionally, both companies are featuring cross-promotional materials on their World Wide Web sites.

"We're extremely pleased to join with Activision in this innovative cross- promotional campaign," said Rick Kreysar, vice president of operations at McAfee. "We think this promotion with Activision's Time Commando will serve to educate a broader audience about computer virus prevention."

To participate in the Time Commando online promotion, consumers must answer a brief questionnaire posted on the Activision World Wide Web site that challenges them to match select weapons found in the game with their corresponding time periods. Internet surfers also will be able to access the questionnaire directly from the McAfee Web site through a hyperlink to the Activision site. Correct entries will be entered into a random drawing for the grand prize trip and select secondary prizes. The grand prize winner will choose one trip from among eight vacation packages that include a dinosaur dig in Colorado; a visit to the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Capri; an exciting martial arts tour of Tokyo; an immersion in the castles and Celtic traditions of Edinburgh and Stirling, Scotland; an archaeological exploration of the Mayan, Aztec and Conquistador traditions of Mexico City and surrounding areas; an outdoor adventure on a down- home dude ranch in Montana; a tour of historic Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam; and a unique simulation of space conditions at the U.S. Space Camp.

In Time Commando, players attempt to defeat a lethal computer virus that has infiltrated the Federation of Europe's military simulation training computer. Players travel through nine historical battle eras, confront up to 300 enemies and master more than 45 weapons as they attempt to defeat the virus. Each historical world features rich 3-D pre-rendered backgrounds, exciting real-time gameplay, four levels of difficulty and two levels of challenging action and adventure. Players must race to complete each level before the computer virus eradicates the computer’s core memory stations, while battling authentic historical foes and seeking numerous power-ups, hidden rooms and weapons.
