www.nintendo.com - Game Boy Color:
Red Storm's stealthy shooter is a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the N64 version. Instead of churning out a run-and-gun platformer for Game Boy Color, the developers at Crawfish Interactive recreated the same strategic gameplay elements which have made Rainbow Six so popular with PC gamers.

In this Pak, you and a team of international operatives known as Rainbow Six are charged with the mission of stopping a terrorist conspiracy to wipe mankind off the face of the Earth.

The Game Boy Color adaptation of the game covers 16 missions, from the jungles of Africa to the heartland of America. Before embarking on a mission, it's your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the mission objectives and then set up your plan of attack accordingly. Successful strategists will have to adhere to the following procedure before engaging the enemy:

Review Orders - Without reviewing your orders, you'll have no idea how to prepare for a mission. These intelligence reports provide clues about what type of gear to pack, and deliver clear mission objectives.

Select Roster - The Rainbow Six team is made up of 10 individual members, each with his or her own specialty. In addition, an unlimited amount of nameless reserves are available to fill out your ranks. Carefully review the stats of each soldier to pick the right person for the job. A total of eight members can be used in each mission.

Equip Gear - Various environments and mission objectives require different types of equipment. You can either equip each team member individually, or outfit your entire team with the same gear.

Assign Teams - Rainbow Six allows you to assign eight specialists to four different teams. Put soldiers with strong leadership skills in command of each team, and think about what you want each team to accomplish before locking down a roster.

Create Plan - If you like, you can plan exactly how each team will behave before the mission actually begins. When the mission starts, the teams will automatically move where you have instructed them to go.

If you can make it through the above menu system and actually start playing the game, you'll be more than ready for anything the terrorists will throw at you.

The actual gameplay uses an overhead perspective, which creates a suitably stealthy feel. Unfortunately, the characters are extremely small and move excruciatingly slowly across the screen. The slow-paced play control is frustrating, but it gives you enough time to aim accurately when it's necessary to eliminate a terrorist.

Although the minor design flaws mentioned above can be a distraction, Rainbow Six is an ambitious Pak which adds a new flavor to the Game Boy Color library. If you're level-headed enough to restrain your trigger finger, you'll enjoy the action found in Rainbow Six.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is compatible only with Game Boy Color.

www.nintendo.com – Nintendo 64:
In a big break from first-person tradition, Rainbow Six privileges stealth and realism over high body-counts.

The debut N64 game from North Carolina publisher Red Storm Entertainment comprises 12 stealthy stages. Developer Saffire picked the 10 choicest missions from the PC version of the game, including Congo and Australia, and added two missions from the best-selling Eagle Watch expansion pack.

Members of Rainbow Six, an all-star antitierrorist team, hail from Spain, U.S., Israel, Australia and elsewhere in the first world. Their basic job is to clean up high-profile riffraff wherever they may strike, from Congo and South America and the good old U.S. of A.

As its fearless leader, the cryptically monikered "Six," you must hand-pick the pros you need for each high-pressure mission. Put safety first, because dead team members will be of no use in later missions. In a welcome change from the every-man-for-himself mentality of most shooters, players can partner to complete especially grueling missions. However, plans for a deathmatch mode were jettisoned as contrary to the Pak's emphasis on teamwork.

Saffire has forged an impressive resume in both whirlwind suspense (James Bond 007 for Game Boy) and glossy N64 action (Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.). The bustling Utah codeshop rewrote the Rainbow Six PC game engine from the ground up to take advantage of the N64's unique strengths. While movement and targeting are excellent, a bit of awkwardness results from the fact that Saffire had to map some of complex controls to the Control Pad.

Make no mistake: this is a demanding, strategically oriented game. Saffire did as good a job as could be expected with the menu system, but mastering the plethora of choices and options will take time.

Rainbow Six gives you a choice of eight sidearms plus silenced versions of most, seven camouflage outfits, and special kits for lockpicking, demolition and electronics work. In this one-hit-and-you're-out game, there are no quick-fix medical kits.

Rainbow Six boasts an exceptionally dramatic sound track. Footfalls are a bit too loud, but the bad guys never seem to notice.

One of the biggest brand names in American letters, Tom Clancy specializes in 800-page doorstops groaning with globetrotting suspense and incredibly detailed descriptions of high-tech weaponry, ruthless Pentagon careerism and international skullduggery. His first N64 game will appeal to spy and adventure fans alike.

Unknown Source:
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is a classic Clancy-style story where you lead an elite multinational task force battling international terrorism in highly realistic settings. Game play is organized around a series of missions in which you must plan and execute precise assaults on terrorist installations. As your mission advances, you will uncover a larger and more sinister conspiracy, where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. And unlike other games, if you make a mistake, you're gone - because in the real world, one shot counts.

To carry out a mission, the player plays "Six," the leader of the team, and must assemble a crack team from a pool of skilled specialists and plan the operation using an overhead three-dimensional model of the target area. Once satisfied with their strategy, the player then leads the assault using a first- or third-person (you can toggle between the two) three-dimensional view. The game will be playable by single players with artificial intelligence controlling friendly and enemy troops, or by multiple players across the internet in both collaborative and head-to-head modes.

Each mission consists of two distinct phases: the planning phase and the action phase. In the planning phase, the player receives a briefing and is given all available intelligence regarding the missions. The player then selects appropriate team members, equips them, and plans the mission.

Rainbow Six creates the best of both strategy and action game play. The action play is team oriented - perfect for Internet play. With 20 playable characters and 17 different missions in real world locations, the variety of gameplay is extensive.

So carefully select your team and even more carefully, conceive your plan. Because it's time to go save the world. One mission at a time.
